For previously colonized nations like Nigeria, these linkages are believed to have been influenced by the legacies of colonial rule, positively or otherwise. Through the Gender Lens: A Century of Social and Political Development in Nigeria looks at how colonialism has enabled or hindered the roles of the state in promoting inclusive development in general, and gender equality, in particular, in the process of nation building. In this edited volume, scholars analyze a host of policies, strategies and programs, as well as empirical evidence, to expose how types of governance — from direct colonial rule in the country from 1914, through her independence in 1960, a Republic in 1963, and to different post-independence governance periods — have influenced gender relations, and the impacts of these on Nigerian women. Diverse sectoral perspectives from education, health, culture, environment, and especially politics, are presented to explain the level of attainment (or otherwise) of gender equality and the implications for Nigeria’s road to sustainable development. The emphasis on the role of the state in development particularly indicts the social and political domains of governance. Hence, the main focus of inquiry in the volume. In its twelve chapters, the authors analyze available data and other information to draw relevant conclusions, identify lessons of experience, including from some cross-country comparisons, and make concrete recommendations for more gender-inclusive systems of governance in the next century of Nigeria’s nationhood.

Originally published in 1981, this book shows that the family and the labour market are political institutions directly relevant to the distribution of power and to economic and social development. Because the political functions of these two institutions are ignored, political systems are misunderstood with serious consequences for the implementation of policy. The studies in the book, which relate to widely different political systems and which cross disciplinary boundaries, all concentrate on the crucial activities of women. They serve to increase our understanding of the political implications of the family, of the sexual divisions of both domestic and wage labour and of the role of education in these inequalities at the time. They show the fundamental comparability of the problems posed by patriarchy as well as the diversity of their manifestations in different political and economic systems. Further, the studies show an unexpected dependence of male-dominated institutions, such as the military and high technology, on women’s traditional gender roles. Ways of empowering the powerless through law, political activity and employment are also discussed. By extending the scope of discussion, this book is a valuable contribution to our understanding of politics and of the centrality of women to political structures.

Local, multinational and multilateral organizations in many developed and developing nations have instituted policies and taken actions that address cases of injustice against women. But gender inequity appears to be an issue beyond what constitutional provisions and corporate strategies can address. How, for instance, does a statutory provision guarantee the equal visibility of men and women in a news report, especially in a neoliberal democracy where the general patriarchal character of the media aligns with the logic of commercialism which prioritizes profit and targets mainly those who have the means of purchase? The invisibility of women in the media is a global issue, and a great concern in Africa. Women’s Political Visibility and Media Access: The Case of Nigeria, however, is about a country of over 160 million people; a population roughly divided equally between male and female. The book, through empirical analyses and qualitative discourses, agglomerates several perspectives regarding the visibility of women in the turbulent Nigerian political terrain and the response of the media in that direction, in a concerted effort to resolve the burning issues of gender equality in Nigeria. The book assesses the impact of aggressive tactics from women in the political arena, “conscious reporting” of women by journalists, and the increased use of ICTs by women as practical ways of bridging this wide gap.
