Book Women and small scale irrigation A review of the factors influencing gendered patterns of participation and benefits

Download or read book Women and small scale irrigation A review of the factors influencing gendered patterns of participation and benefits written by Bryan, Elizabeth and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Small-scale irrigation is expanding rapidly in parts of the world, especially sub-Saharan Africa, offering smallholder farmers an opportunity to improve their livelihoods, diets, and resilience to climate change among other benefits. Growing research focuses on the potential for small-scale irrigation to offer a pathway for women’s empowerment, yet the factors conditioning the relationship between small-scale irrigation and women’s empowerment are not well understood. The evidence tends to be scattered across context-specific case studies that focus on targeted outcomes, without distinguishing between technology types, scales, or approaches to irrigation systems or technologies. This paper synthesizes the issues related to gender and small-scale irrigation using a conceptual framework that highlights the linkages between elements of women’s empowerment and small-scale irrigation. Because gendered dynamics with small-scale irrigation play out differently depending on the scale of irrigation and the technologies used, this paper applies the framework to examine case studies across a typology of small-scale irrigation systems. The case studies cover a range of farming and livelihood systems in which women’s roles and gender relations vary, highlighting the importance of the opportunity structure or context in which irrigation takes place. This paper then draws lessons on the various ways in which small-scale irrigation, gender relations, and women’s empowerment interact and highlights areas where research gaps remain.

Book Irrigation and Gender Roles

Download or read book Irrigation and Gender Roles written by Satyendra Kumar Gupta and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper proposes and tests the hypothesis that the historical use of irrigation in agriculture has reduced female labor force participation and the level of female property rights, and has affected multiple other forms of gender bias and inequality. We provide evidence using five data sets: (i) ethnographic data from pre-modern societies (Standard Cross-Cultural Sample), (ii) cross-country data, (iii) individual level survey data on children of immigrants from multiple waves of the European Social Survey, (iv) individual level survey data on children of immigrants from multiple waves of the American Community Survey, and (v) individual level data from multiple waves of the India Demographic and Household Survey. We establish that already in pre-modern societies, irrigated agriculture was associated with women performing lighter and more domestic tasks, and believes of female inferiority. Next, we find a negative association between irrigation and more recent female labor force participation in cross-country data, among children of US immigrants, and in rural India. Moreover, the offspring of European immigrants with an ancestry associated with irrigation view female labor market participation less favorably. Finally, where use of irrigation is more widespread in rural India, females are more accepting of domestic violence. These results are robust to a host of control variables, including ancestral plow use and contemporary economic and social factors. We argue that two main mechanisms are behind our results. First, irrigation raised the relative labor productivity of males compared to females in agriculture, i.e. irrigated agriculture and brawn are complements. As females instead tended to perform more non-monetary domestic chores, over time this has produced a cultural preference against female participation in the formal labor market outside the home. Second, irrigation historically concentrated power in the hands of the elite which produced autocratic regimes. In turn, more autocratic regimes are associated with weaker property rights for women.

Book Advancing gender equality through agricultural and environmental research Past present and future

Download or read book Advancing gender equality through agricultural and environmental research Past present and future written by Pyburn, Rhiannon, ed. and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2021-11-02 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past decade, interest in gender equality and women’s empowerment has grown rapidly, creating a unique opportunity to institutionalize gender research within agricultural research for development. This book, edited by researchers from the CGIAR Gender Platform, reviews and reflects on the growing body of evidence from gender research. It marks a shift a way from a traditional focus on how gender analysis can contribute to improved productivity, flipping the question to ask, How does agricultural and environmental research and development contribute to gender equality and women’s empowerment? Chapters synthesize the wide range of CGIAR and other research in this area, covering breeding research and seed systems, value chain participation, nutrition-sensitive agriculture, natural resources, climate adaptation and mitigation, the “feminization” of agriculture, women’s role in agricultural research, and emerging gender transformative approaches.

Book Livelihoods and gender roles in drip irrigation technology A case of Nepal

Download or read book Livelihoods and gender roles in drip irrigation technology A case of Nepal written by Bhawana Upadhyay and published by IWMI. This book was released on 2005 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper attempts to understand gender issues in micro-irrigation technology by exploring the dynamics of gender, water and rural livelihoods. Based on an empirical study in the rural areas ofWest Nepal undertaken in 2003, the paper assesses the socioeconomic impact of drip-irrigation systems on men and women􀂶s lives. A combination of participatory research tools, participant observationand secondary sources were used to generate data. The study revealed that women extensively contributed to vegetable farming under the drip-irrigation systems. The total time (mean hours) spent by women in vegetable production is significantly higher than those spent by their male counterparts. The benefit cost analysis of vegetable farming has shown overall viability in terms of net present value, benefit cost ratio, internal rate of return and payback period. Based on the study findings, thepaper suggests that similar technological interventions could be considered in places of similar socioeconomic and biophysical characteristics to help empower rural women. Finally, the paper raisessome significant questions in relation to rural livelihoods and womens entitlements.

Book Gender Mainstreaming Case Study

Download or read book Gender Mainstreaming Case Study written by Asian Development Bank and published by Asian Development Bank. This book was released on 2015-06-01 with total page 45 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2006, the State of Chhattisgarh adopted the new Participatory Irrigation Management (PIM) Act, which set out important changes for irrigation management and had significant implications for women's participation in irrigation system. Chhattisgarh has abundant agricultural land and rainfall. However, agricultural productivity was low because only wet season rice (or paddy) was grown in most areas. The Chhattisgarh Irrigation Development Project (CIDP) improved irrigation, making it possible for dry season (rabi) cropping and giving many farmers the opportunity to improve their livelihood. With the PIM Act, the CIDP improved farm productivity and increased the participation of women in farm decision-making. The CIDP was the first irrigation project in Chhattisgarh that worked within a participatory irrigation management framework and strengthened water users' associations.

Book Gender and rural transformation

Download or read book Gender and rural transformation written by Kosec, Katrina and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2020-10-13 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rural transformation is central to the broader structural transformation process taking place in developing countries — fueled by the globalization of value chains, changing food systems, new technologies, conflict and displacement, and climate change, among other factors. Rural transformation refers to the process whereby rural economies diversify into nonfarm activities, agriculture becomes more capital-intensive and commercially oriented, and linkages with neighboring towns and cities grow and deepen (Berdegué, Rosada, and Bebbington 2014). It can bring about fundamental changes in the way businesses and households organize, such as the commercialization and diversification of agricultural production; increased agricultural productivity; migration; and the emergence of a broader set of rural livelihood activities.

Book Gender and Law

Download or read book Gender and Law written by Lorenzo Cotula and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2006 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women constitute a large portion of the economically active population engaged in agriculture. International instruments on human rights, the environment and sustainable development reaffirm the principle of non-discrimination on the basis of sex or gender. Yet women often face gendered obstacles in realizing their rights and feeding their families. The right to an adequate standard of living, including adequate food, may thus not be fulfilled. These obstacles may stem from directly or indirectly discriminatory norms or from entrenched socio-cultural practices, or both. This study analyses the gender dimension of agriculture-related legislation in a selection of different countries around the world, examining the legal status of women in three key areas: rights to land and other natural resources; rights of women agricultural workers; and rights concerning women's agricultural self-employment activities, ranging from women's status in rural cooperatives to their access to credit, training and extension services.
