Book excerpt: This dissertation examines the traditions attributed to early Muslim women that are quoted in classical Quran commentaries, and studies their literary functions within such works. Traditions of this type are diverse in literary form, as well as in the exegetical topics that they are made to address. Several exegetical works conventionally dated the formative period (i.e. prior to 338 A.H./950 C.E.) contain significant numbers of traditions which are ascribed to women--particularly, to 'A'isha bt. Abi Bakr (d. 58/678). Moreover, three of the h[dotbelow]adith compilations which came to be regarded as most authoritative by Sunnis have chapters on quranic exegesis which contain substantial numbers of such traditions. Furthermore, traditions ascribed to early Muslim women appear in many medieval commentaries on the Quran. While the existence of such traditions is well known to scholars in Quran and Tafsir Studies, surprisingly little research has been done on them. Therefore, little is known about these traditions, either as a category, or about the literary functions they have in exegetical works. This dissertation places traditions of this type in their literary-historical context, and then systematically surveys them. Utilizing gender as an analytical category, the textual functions of select traditions within the textual genre of medieval Quran commentary are examined. Moreover, the exclusionary discourse propounded in classical tafsir works, which brands women in general as intellectually deficient and unfit to exercise authority is critically examined, particularly with respect to its implications for our understanding of the literary functions of traditions attributed to women for medieval exegetes. This study demonstrates that gender is integral to matters of central concern to medieval Quran interpreters: exegetical authority, social hierarchy, communal and sectarian identities, and even the boundaries of the canon. For them, what was primarily at stake was not so much "the status of women" per se, but the (re)construction and maintenance of the gendered social hierarchy upon which they believed that a believing and righteous society is of necessity founded. Their (re)construction and (re)negotiations of the contours of the exclusionary discourse is an exegetical construction of gender itself, and with it interpretive authority.

Mubarak illustrates the ways in which colonialism, nationalism, and modernization set into motion new ways of engaging with the subject of women in the Qur'an. Focusing her analysis on Qur'anic commentaries as a scholarly genre, Mubarak offers a critical and comparative analysis of these three modern commentaries with seven medieval commentaries, spanning from the ninth to fourteenth centuries, on verses dealing with neglectful husbands (4:128), rebellious wives (4:34), polygyny (4:3), and divorce (2:228). In contrast to assessments of the exegetical tradition as monolithically patriarchal, this book captures a medieval and modern tafs=ir tradition with pluralistic, complex, and evolving interpretations of women and gender in the Qur'an. Rather than pit a seemingly egalitarian Qur'an against an allegedly patriarchal exegetical tradition, Mubarak affirms the need for a critical engagement with tafs=ir studies among scholars concerned with women and gender in Islam. Mubarak argues that the capacity to bring new meanings to bear on the Qur'an is not only an intellectually viable one but inherent to the exegetical tradition.

A new approach is needed: one that examines the underlying instruments of tradition and explores avenues for effecting change. At the same time, there is ambivalence regarding the general norms, terminology, and approaches of feminism and feminist theology. This ambivalence is in large part a product of various hegemonic, androcentric, and patriarchal discourses that seek to dictate legitimate and authoritative interpretations. These discourses not only fuel ambivalence, they also effectively obscure valuable possibilities related to interreligious feminist engagement. Divine Words, Female Voices is the follow-up to Jerusha Lamptey's 2014 book, Never Wholly Other, in which she introduced the idea of "Muslima" theology and applied it to the topic of religious diversity. In this new book, she extends her earlier arguments to contend that interreligious feminist engagement is both a theologically valid endeavor and a vital resource for Muslim women scholars. Whereas Muslim conservatives argue that gender-differentiated legal rulings reflect complementary gender roles, Muslim feminists argue that Islamic law has subordinated women and is thus in need of reform. The shared assumption on both sides, however, is that gender fundamentally shapes an individual’s legal status. Beyond the Binary explores an expansive cross section of topics in ninth- to twelfth-century Hanafi legal thought, ranging from sexual crimes to consent to marriage, to show that early Muslim jurists imagined a world built not on a binary distinction between male and female but on multiple intersecting hierarchies of gender, age, enslavement, lineage, class, and other social roles. Saadia Yacoob offers a restorative reading of Islamic law, arguing that its intersectional and relational understanding of legal personhood offers a productive space for Muslim feminists to move beyond critique and instead think with and through the Islamic legal tradition.

Analyzing classical Muslim literary representations of Muhammad's body as they emerge in Sunni hadith and sira from the eighth through the eleventh centuries CE, Michael Muhammad Knight argues that early Muslims' theories and imaginings about Muhammad's body contributed in significant ways to the construction of prophetic masculinity and authority. Knight approaches hadith and sira as important religiocultural and literary phenomena in their own right. In rich detail, he lays out the variety of ways that early believers imagined Muhammad's relationship to beneficent energy—baraka—and to its boundaries, effects, and limits. Drawing on insights from contemporary theory about the body, Knight shows how changing representations of the Prophet's body helped to legitimatize certain types of people or individuals as religious authorities, while marginalizing or delegitimizing others. For some Sunni Muslims, Knight concludes, claims of religious authority today remain connected to ideas about Muhammad's body.
