Download or read book Star Tales written by Ian Ridpath and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2018-01-01 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every night, a pageant of Greek mythology circles overhead. Perseus flies to the rescue of Andromeda, Orion faces the charge of the snorting Bull, and the ship of the Argonauts sails in search of the Golden Fleece. Constellations are the invention of human imagination, not of nature. They are an expression of the human desire to impress its own order upon the apparent chaos of the night sky. Modern science tells us that these twinkling points of light are glowing balls of gas, but the ancient Greeks, to whom we owe many of our constellations, knew nothing of this. Ian Ridpath, award-winning astronomy writer and popularizer, has been intrigued by the myths of the stars for many years. Star Tales is the first modern guide to combine all the fascinating myths in one book, illustrated with the beautiful and evocative engravings from two of the leading star atlases: Johann Bode’s Uranographia of 1801 and John Flamsteed’s Atlas Coelestis of 1729. This classic book, now in a revised and expanded edition, presents additional information on the constellations with new and enchanting illustrations. For anyone interested in the stars and classical mythology, for anyone who is an armchair astronomer, this is the perfect gift.

Download or read book Uncharted Constellations written by John C. Barentine and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-04-04 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book compiles an array of interesting constellations that fell by the wayside before the IAU established the modern canon of constellations. That decision left out lesser known ones whose history is nevertheless interesting, but at last author John Barentine is giving them their due. This book is a companion to "The Lost Constellations", highlighting the more obscure configurations. The 16 constellations found in this volume fall into one or more of three broad categories: asterims, such as the Big Dipper in Ursa Major; single-sourced constellations introduced on surviving charts by a cartographer perhaps currying the favor of sponsors; and re-brands, new figures meant to displace existing constellations, often for an ideological reason. All of them reveal something unique about the development of humanity's map of the sky.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This genre falls under the category of Sci-fi fantasy thriller a works that is just as exciting as the adventures of Lora Croft in “Tomb Raiders” I chose this genre to create characters that exist outside of the everyday urban-scape theme. One of the main characters is a black woman; a seasoned sea captain for example. I wanted to create another kind of hero, in another part of the world, on another kind of mission based on another mindset; more of a West African theme influenced by the folklore of the ancient Yoruba of Southwestern Nigeria which is deeply submerged in cosmological and celestial influences and is viewed as individual characteristic energies expressing themselves universally in allegorical narratives. These legends tend to be older then Western civilization. I wanted the story to be unique and the characters just as unique. This is a story told by the ancestors of the war in heaven before the creation of man...this a story of the battle of illumination and darkness the fight to maintain balance between good and evil.

Download or read book The Lost Constellations written by John C. Barentine and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-10-23 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Casual stargazers are familiar with many classical figures and asterisms composed of bright stars (e.g., Orion and the Plough), but this book reveals not just the constellations of today but those of yesteryear. The history of the human identification of constellations among the stars is explored through the stories of some influential celestial cartographers whose works determined whether new inventions survived. The history of how the modern set of 88 constellations was defined by the professional astronomy community is recounted, explaining how the constellations described in the book became permanently “extinct.” Dr. Barentine addresses why some figures were tried and discarded, and also directs observers to how those figures can still be picked out on a clear night if one knows where to look. These lost constellations are described in great detail using historical references, enabling observers to rediscover them on their own surveys of the sky. Treatment of the obsolete constellations as extant features of the night sky adds a new dimension to stargazing that merges history with the accessibility and immediacy of the night sky.
Download or read book EVERY MAN IS A STAR In search of our Mother Star the identification of the stellar significators in a birth chart written by Giacomo Albano and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2019-06-11 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The constellations and the fixed stars are the true origin and the foundation of astrology. Paracelsus claimed that each of us is the manifestation of a star, but by this we mean a certain cosmic principle, one of the ideas; this idea is also typical of a certain star, but we have not derived it from the star, it is only that we are related to it and therefore we attract each other. Thus we understand the importance of the techniques shown in the first part of this book for identifying stellar and planetary significators in a birth chart. We will see how to identify the constellations, the fixed stars and also the planets with which the native is in particular "sympathy" and how to use them both in the common astrological practice, both in spiritual or magical astrology. In the following the book deals with the relevance of the heliacal phases in world astrology. The last chapter focuses on the analysis of sympathetic attraction mechanisms between terrestrial and celestial realities.
