Book Gearing Up for Transportation Engineering a Summer Institute

Download or read book Gearing Up for Transportation Engineering a Summer Institute written by Kathleen M. Leonard and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The numbers of female and minority students enrolled in engineering schools are increasing slowly, however there is still a relatively small percentage drawn to the field of transportation civil engineering. As a consequence, there is a need to educate young people about the profession to encourage under-represented individuals to appreciate the contributions of engineers to society and encourage them to become civil engineers. This summer institute project consisted of bringing middle school students, after recommendations by their teachers, to the University of Alabama in Huntsville campus to learn about engineering as a career and experience a variety of transportation engineering design topics. The participants gained knowledge about the role of engineers in society as well as learned how engineers use their knowledge in design applications. An additional program was held this year in which the alumni were invited back for more advanced research in civil engineering projects. Several UAH faulty members and Society of Women Engineer professionals acted as team mentors. As an important part of this project, local minority and female engineers served as mentors for the program. This was the ninth year of the transportation summer program at UAH.

Book excerpt: A multi-disciplinary approach to transportation planning fundamentals The Transportation Planning Handbook is a comprehensive, practice-oriented reference that presents the fundamental concepts of transportation planning alongside proven techniques. This new fourth edition is more strongly focused on serving the needs of all users, the role of safety in the planning process, and transportation planning in the context of societal concerns, including the development of more sustainable transportation solutions. The content structure has been redesigned with a new format that promotes a more functionally driven multimodal approach to planning, design, and implementation, including guidance toward the latest tools and technology. The material has been updated to reflect the latest changes to major transportation resources such as the HCM, MUTCD, HSM, and more, including the most current ADA accessibility regulations. This book presents the fundamentals of transportation planning in a multidisciplinary context, giving readers a practical reference for day-to-day answers. Serve the needs of all users Incorporate safety into the planning process Examine the latest transportation planning software packages Get up to date on the latest standards, recommendations, and codes Developed by The Institute of Transportation Engineers, this book is the culmination of over seventy years of transportation planning solutions, fully updated to reflect the needs of a changing society.
