Book New Faces of Harbour Cities

Download or read book New Faces of Harbour Cities written by Şebnem Gökçen Dündar and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2014-10-21 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New Faces of Harbour Cities explores the changing so-called “faces” of harbour cities. Whilst urban regeneration and harbour cities are discussed as related realms within the wider field of urban competitiveness, few studies have attempted to give place to the broader set of economic, social, legal, environmental and cultural dimensions of urban waterfront regeneration in harbour cities concerning not only Western and Northern Europe, but also Aegean and Mediterranean cities. The book provides a multi-disciplinary, yet holistic analysis of the port-city interface as a major goal of creating new domains of entrepreneurial activity. Offering noteworthy potential, the abandonment of port districts offers new opportunities in placing brownfield port areas back into public use through their comprehensive revitalization. With the rapid growth of special interest in the waterfront regeneration of port districts, many harbour cities in the world are making an effort to give their cities a brand new “face”. However, there are still specific cases showing that this goal may not always find success, as is discussed for various cities in this book. Key features of the book include a highly readable discussion of the relationship between urban waterfront regeneration and port cities that both address to the evolution of the port-city interface and contemporary patterns of activity. The book also includes a wide range of international case studies in both developed and developing cities, whilst providing a balanced view of the critical issues and related cases. While focusing on key themes, the discussion also considers the critique of issues such as risk management, legal challenges in planning and the balance between the need for logistic activities and brownfield regeneration of port districts as a major asset in terms of urban image. As such, New Faces of Harbour Cities will serve as an important reference to academic studies that explore key themes such as urban waterfront regeneration, brownfield development, the port-city interface, green energy, mixed-use regeneration, and legal aspects in planning.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text provides an original contribution to the maritime literature focusing on developments in this field in the Baltic Region. This part of the world has seen dramatic changes in recent years, particularly with the collapse of the Communist led regimes in Poland and the Soviet Union, and the emergence of the new states of Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Russia and neighbouring Ukraine and Belarus, the reunification of Germany and the disappearance of the old DDR and the entry of Finland and Sweden to the European Union. Book Transport Development Challenges in the Twenty First Century

Download or read book Transport Development Challenges in the Twenty First Century written by Monika Bąk and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-03-29 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores the field of transport sector development. Derived from the 2015 TranSopot conference held in Sopot, Poland, it discusses current trends, issues, and research on the topic. Specifically, it aims to explore sustainable development, examines current problems ranging from transport systems to transport enterprises and provides a variety of analytical methods such as economic and econometric analysis. The three most important fields of current transport research are sustainable transport development, innovation and technological progress and the conditions of transport enterprise growth and survival. Transport is an activity which is supposed to be sustainable, environmentally aware, economically optimal, socially sound and politically responsible. Striving for innovation in transport means looking for organizational and technical solutions which increase the efficiency, effectiveness and safety of transportation. However, the main research issue in the field are strategies for sustainable transport developments in urban and rural areas, instruments of internalization of external transport costs, promotion of environmentally-friendly transport behavior and improvement of transport energy efficiency. Transport infrastructure innovation, intelligent transport systems, innovations in management and finance are some of the main concerns of researchers and policy-makers in the field. Transport enterprises need to adapt to the conditions of the new economic growth perspectives. They need to create unique growth conditions, otherwise they will condemn themselves to struggle for survival. In particular, transport enterprises have to create special functioning systems and programs to diversify economic activity to use funds in the most efficient ways possible.

Book East Central Europe in Exile Volume 1

Download or read book East Central Europe in Exile Volume 1 written by Anna Mazurkiewicz and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2014-10-16 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The East Central Europe in Exile series consists of two volumes which contain chapters written by both esteemed and renowned scholars, as well as young, aspiring researchers whose work brings a fresh, innovative approach to the study of migration. Altogether, there are thirty-eight chapters in both volumes focusing on the East Central European émigré experience in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The first volume, Transatlantic Migrations, focuses on the reasons for emigration from the lands of East Central Europe; from the Baltic to the Adriatic, the intercontinental journey, as well as on the initial adaptation and assimilation processes. The second volume is slightly different in scope, for it focuses on the aspect of negotiating new identities acquired in the adopted homeland. The authors contributing to Transatlantic Identities focus on the preservation of the East Central European identity, maintenance of contacts with the “old country”, and activities pursued on behalf of, and for the sake of, the abandoned homeland. Combined, both volumes describe the transnational processes affecting East Central European migrants.
