Book excerpt: This book addresses the unique sociocultural and historical systems of oppression that have alienated African-American and other racial minority patients within the mental healthcare system. This text aims to build a novel didactic curriculum addressing racism, justice, and community mental health as these issues intersect clinical practice. Unlike any other resource, this guide moves beyond an exploration of the problem of racism and its detrimental effects, to a practical, solution-oriented discussion of how to understand and approach the mental health consequences with a lens and sensitivity for contemporary justice issues. After establishing the historical context of racism within organized medicine and psychiatry, the text boldly examines contemporary issues, including clinical biases in diagnosis and treatment, addiction and incarceration, and perspectives on providing psychotherapy to racial minorities. The text concludes with chapters covering training and medical education within this sphere, approaches to supporting patients coping with racism and discrimination, and strategies for changing institutional practices in mental healthcare. Written by thought leaders in the field, Racism and Psychiatry is the only current tool for psychiatrists, psychologists, administrators, educators, medical students, social workers, and all clinicians working to treat patients dealing with issues of racism at the point of mental healthcare.

Book Work Worklessness and the Political Economy of Health

Download or read book Work Worklessness and the Political Economy of Health written by Clare Bambra and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2011-10-27 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are told that 'work is good for us' and that ill health is caused by 'individual lifestyles'. Drawing on research from public health, social policy, epidemiology, geography and political science, this evidence-based inter-disciplinary book firmly challenges these contemporary orthodoxies. It systematically demonstrates that work - or lack of it - is central to our health and wellbeing and is the underlying determinant of health inequalities. Work is the cornerstone of modern society and dominates adult life with around a third of our time spent working. It is a vital part of self-identity and for most of us it is the foundation of economic and social status. As such, the material and psychosocial conditions in which we work have immense consequences for our physical and mental wellbeing, as well as the distribution of health across the population. Recessions, job-loss, insecurity and unemployment also have important ramifications for the health and wellbeing of individuals, families and communities. Chronic illness is itself a significant cause of worklessness and low pay. Drawing on examples from different countries, this book shows that the relationship between work, worklessness and health varies by country. Countries with a more regulated work environment and a more interventionist and supportive welfare system have better health and smaller work-related health inequalities. The book provides examples of specific policies and interventions that mitigate the ill-health effects of work and worklessness. It concludes by asserting the importance of politics and policy choices in the aetiology of health and health inequalities.

Book Suite in Four Movements

Download or read book Suite in Four Movements written by Eric Coates and published by London : Heinemann. This book was released on 1953 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the best-loved names in English music today is that of Eric Coates. As a composer, both charming and stirring, he is responsible for two of our national signature tunes - the Knightsbridge March from his London Suite, which heralds In Town Tonight, and the tune which cheered and roused countless millions to greater effort during the war years, Calling All Workers. Here now is his autobiography: a story destined to fill the gaps in those untold private pictures which form around our favorite writers, actors and composers. This book opens with an Allegretto Pastorale, the scene of the author's boyhood among the fields and lands of Nottinghamshire and in the happy circle of family and friends. The youngest son of the local doctor, Eric Coates' musical gifts showed themselves at an early age, and developed unfettered in an environment of affectionate guidance and interest. The second movement of gathering tempo - Lento-Andante-Allegro - follows the young man's career as a student at the Royal Academy of Music and his beginnings as a viola player and composer. This is a story of endless fascination, introducing names which have passed into our life and culture. There are pictures of friends, tutors and professional acquaintances, among them Lionel Tertis, Sir Thomas Beecham, Sir Henry Wood, Elgar, W.S. Gilbert, Richard Strauss, Claude Debussy and so many more. And always, the thread of a personal life, and experiences as hilarious as the episode of the "Celtic quartet". Romanza in modo variazione is the romantic third movement. This is Mr. Coates' own love story, and one of the few true examples of the fairy-story formula "and so they lived happily ever after." Through this and the final Rondo we see the development of the young composer, from his first song success with Stonecracker John to the public figure we know today, whose Knightbridge March created a sales record in gramophone recordings and is known, with his other delightful compositions, throughout the world.

Book Mathematical Models in Epidemiology

Download or read book Mathematical Models in Epidemiology written by Fred Brauer and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-10-10 with total page 628 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is a comprehensive, self-contained introduction to the mathematical modeling and analysis of disease transmission models. It includes (i) an introduction to the main concepts of compartmental models including models with heterogeneous mixing of individuals and models for vector-transmitted diseases, (ii) a detailed analysis of models for important specific diseases, including tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS, influenza, Ebola virus disease, malaria, dengue fever and the Zika virus, (iii) an introduction to more advanced mathematical topics, including age structure, spatial structure, and mobility, and (iv) some challenges and opportunities for the future. There are exercises of varying degrees of difficulty, and projects leading to new research directions. For the benefit of public health professionals whose contact with mathematics may not be recent, there is an appendix covering the necessary mathematical background. There are indications which sections require a strong mathematical background so that the book can be useful for both mathematical modelers and public health professionals.
