Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With first-hand accounts and colour artwork, this title describes the planes and pilots of the famous 4th Fighter Group 'Fourth but First' that became the highest-scoring unit of the mighty 8th Air Force in World War 2. Formed around a nucleus of pilots already seasoned by their experience as volunteers in the RAF's Eagle Squadrons, the 4th Fighter Group was established in England in October 1942. Initially flying Spitfires, the Debden Eagles went on to fly the P-47 and P-51, becoming, in July 1943, the first Eighth Air Force fighter group to penetrate German air space. The group's record of 583 air and 469 ground victories was unmatched in the Eighth Air Force, and the group produced a cast of characters that included legendary aces Don Blakeslee, Pierce McKennon, “Kid” Hofer, Duane Beeson, Steve Pisanos and Howard Hively. Involved in the D-Day landings, Operation Market Garden, the Battle of the Bulge and the crossing of the Rhine, the group's achievements came at a high price, with a 42 percent casualty rate. Packed with pilots' experiences, detailed aircraft profiles and full combat histories, this book is an intriguing insight into the best-known American fighter unit in World War II.

In the band's first nine years together they scored gold records for every album release and delivered songs that changed the musical landscape. Book Tomb of the Eagles

Download or read book Tomb of the Eagles written by John W. Hedges and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 1987 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Isbister in the Orkneys is one of those extraordinary archaeological sites where the remains of Neolithic man and his works have been so well preserved that they give us an amazingly clear picture of the life and people of 5000 years ago. In Tomb of the Eagles John W. Hedges describes vividly the activities of a tribe which had as its totem the magnificent white-tailed sea eagle. For these people the building and use of the tomb was symbol and expression of their identity. It was here that the dead joined their ancestors–but only after the flesh had been stripped from their bones. It was here, too, that offerings were made. Here broken pots were piled; fish, eagles and joints of meat mouldered; and the hands of the living sorted the heaped bones of the dead.

Book Tales from the Boston College Sideline

Download or read book Tales from the Boston College Sideline written by Reid Oslin and published by Sports Publishing LLC. This book was released on 2004 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many people do know that Boston College's most embarrassing football defeat may have saved the lives of hundreds of Eagles fans. They may also not know that Doug Flutie failed to see a wide-open receiver and instead heaved the ball to an apparently well covered Gerard Phelan to complete the Miracle in Miami. The stories behind those little known facts and many more are contained in Tales from the Boston College Sideline, an anecdotal history of Boston College football. Author Reid Oslin, who served as Boston College's sports information director for nearly a quarter of a century, has collected scores of stories about the many accomplishments--and occasional downfalls--of the Boston College Eagles. Material from the University Archives, dozens of personal interviews, and the author's own up-close recollections will make Tales from the Boston College Sideline a valuable resource--as well as enjoyable history--for any BC fan.
