Download or read book Behind the Gas Mask written by Thomas I Faith and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2014-10-15 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Behind the Gas Mask, Thomas Faith offers an institutional history of the Chemical Warfare Service, the department tasked with improving the Army's ability to use and defend against chemical weapons during and after World War One. Taking the CWS's story from the trenches to peacetime, he explores how the CWS's work on chemical warfare continued through the 1920s despite deep opposition to the weapons in both military and civilian circles. As Faith shows, the believers in chemical weapons staffing the CWS allied with supporters in the military, government, and private industry to lobby to add chemical warfare to the country's permanent arsenal. Their argument: poison gas represented an advanced and even humane tool in modern war, while its applications for pest control and crowd control made a chemical capacity relevant in peacetime. But conflict with those aligned against chemical warfare forced the CWS to fight for its institutional life--and ultimately led to the U.S. military's rejection of battlefield chemical weapons.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recently, World War II veterans have come forward to claim compensation for health effects they say were caused by their participation in chemical warfare experiments. In response, the Veterans Administration asked the Institute of Medicine to study the issue. Based on a literature review and personal testimony from more than 250 affected veterans, this new volume discusses in detail the development and chemistry of mustard agents and Lewisite followed by interesting and informative discussions about these substances and their possible connection to a range of health problems, from cancer to reproductive disorders. The volume also offers an often chilling historical examination of the use of volunteers in chemical warfare experiments by the U.S. militaryâ€"what the then-young soldiers were told prior to the experiments, how they were "encouraged" to remain in the program, and how they were treated afterward. This comprehensive and controversial book will be of importance to policymakers and legislators, military and civilian planners, officials at the Department of Veterans Affairs, military historians, and researchers.

Book Reusable Elastomeric Respirators in Health Care

Download or read book Reusable Elastomeric Respirators in Health Care written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2019-04-15 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Protecting the health and safety of health care workers is vital to the health of each of us. Preparing for and responding to a future influenza pandemic or to a sustained outbreak of an airborne transmissible disease requires a high-level commitment to respiratory protection for health care workers across the wide range of settings in which they work and the jobs that they perform. Keeping health care workers healthy is an ethical commitment both in terms of addressing the occupational risks faced by health care workers and of providing for the continuity of patient care and services needed to maintain the health of individuals and communities. During a public health emergency, challenges will arise concerning the availability of respiratory protective devices (i.e., respirators). Reusable respirators (specifically, reusable half-facepiece elastomeric respirators) are the standard respiratory protection device used in many industries, and they provide an option for use in health care that has to date not been fully explored. The durability and reusability of elastomeric respirators make them desirable for stockpiling for emergencies, where the need for large volumes of respirators can be anticipated. However, they are used infrequently in health care. Reusable Elastomeric Respirators in Health Care explores the potential for the use of elastomeric respirators in the U.S. health care system with a focus on the economic, policy, and implementation challenges and opportunities. This report examines the practicability of elastomeric use in health care on a routine basis and during an influenza pandemic or other large aerosol-transmissible outbreak, when demand for respiratory protective devices by U.S. health care personnel may be larger than domestic supplies. The report also addresses the issues regarding emergency stockpile management of elastomeric respiratory protective devices.

Some of the aspects are the National Incident Management System (NIMS) implementation activities for hospitals and health care systems and the Hospital Incident Command System (HICS) IV missions. The book also explains the implementation issues, requirements, and timelines in establishing an internal HICS IV program. It presents the assessment of likely mass casualty events and potential hospital impact. The book also features appendices for emergency response team checklists, PPE donning and doffing guide, ambulatory and non-ambulatory decontamination setup, ETA exercises, and ETA drills. The book is intended to provide understanding of emergency response to first emergency medicine professionals, first responders, security staff, community-level disaster planners, and public health and disaster management researchers. - Common sense approach shows what really works, not what is theoretically achievable - Forms, checklists, and guidelines can be used to develop concrete response plans, validate existing operations, or simply expand knowledge base - The latest from OSHA, Joint Commission and NIMS (National Incident Management System) - Cross-disciplinary author team ensures material is appropriate for all member of this important collaboration

Book A Duplex Machine for Studying the Course of Gases Through Canisters

Download or read book A Duplex Machine for Studying the Course of Gases Through Canisters written by Robert Fogelson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-08-29 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Duplex Machine for Studying the Course of Gases Through Canisters: Thesis The object of this investigation was the design and installation of a machine for studying the courses of gas es through canisters, such as those used in the u.s.army gas mask, and also others of special design. The primary purpose in the work was to produce a machine that would as far as possible simulate human breathing, and at the same time permit tests on canisters to be run with more exact chemical control and uniformity of conditions, than has been possible in man tests. The work was done by the author at the American University Experiment Station of the Research Division, Chemical Warfare Service. The Gas mask Research Section had charge of the work, which was conducted in the Canister Testing Laboratory. In connection with this investigation there is included the general procedure which was followed in testing, and also, very briefly, the method of recording the results.
