Book Garrick s Pupil Classic Reprint

Download or read book Garrick s Pupil Classic Reprint written by Augustin Filon and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Garrick's Pupil Just as the third hour of the afternoon had sounded from the belfry of Saint Martin's-in the-fields, a hackney coach drew up before the most pretentious mansion upon the west side of Leicester Fields; and while the Coachman has tened to agitate the heavy door-knocker, a young woman, almost a child, sprang out upon the pavement without waiting to have the shaky steps unfolded and lowered for her convenience. Her dust-colored mantle, disarranged by her rapid movements, revealed a rich costume beneath; while the dazzled passer-by might have caught a glimpse, amidst the whiteness of the elevated skirts, of a tiny pair of red satin slippers and two slender, exquisitely moulded ankles finely clad in silken hose with embroidered clocks. The girl turned and assisted a more aged woman, leaning upon a crutch-headed cane, to descend. This lady wore the big straw bonnet and gray gown of the Quaker persuasion, a rigidly simple costume, which occasionally is becoming to extreme youth, but rarely enhances maturer charms. Download or read book The Pupil Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Wade Crawford Barclay and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-25 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pupil, Vol. 1 Have you ever thought about what it takes to make a Sunday school? We are doubtless all familiar with the remark of President Garfield that Mark Hopkins on one end of a Jog and a student on the other would be a college. Would a similar definition answer for a Sunday school? Imagine a boy seated on one end of a bench and John H. Vincent on the other. What more would be necessary to constitute a Sunday school? An open-hearted pupil and a good teacher brought together anywhere at any time provide the chief requirements of what we have in mind when we speak of. A Sun day school. Besides these two factors of first importance there are others that also are important. Since there are many more pupils than there are good teachers, and since systematic plans are needed for bringing pupils 'and teachers together regularly in an advantageous place, as well as for other reasons, an organization is needed. Often when we use the term Sunday school we have in mind simply this necessary organization. Then, of course, _ the teacher is not merely to talk with his pupils upon any subject that may chance to occur to his mind. Lessons, intelligently selected, suited to the pupils' needs, are required. In making the lessons effective in the lives of the pupils there are principles and methods which should be under stood and used. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoirs of the Life of John Philip Kemble, Esq., Vol. 2 of 2: Including a History of the Stage, From the Time of Garrick to the Present Period To Henderson he had no introduction whatever, but a letter written with so much modesty and ta lent, that it procured for him the zealous friendship of that great and good man. He enquired into his studies; heard him recite; seemed at once to dis cover that he had formed an able pupil unknown to himself; and at length perceiving that the bent of his mind was decidedly theatrical, he only then thought of the best means of preparing him, pru dently, for his own profession. He recommended him to fence regularly with Angelo, and he ex tended his steps rather beyond the common limits Of dancing. Mr. Kemble, though a graceful figure, learned his perfect stage deportment under Le Picq. Henderson made him known, as a young man whom he esteemed, to Cumberland and to Hayley, to Mr. Whiteford and Mr. Steevens and Harley knew how to profit by such minds, and become agreeable to such men. Book Camilla A Picture of Youth

Download or read book Camilla A Picture of Youth written by Frances Burney and published by e-artnow. This book was released on 2017-12-13 with total page 1148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Camilla – A Picture of Youth deals with the matrimonial concerns of a group of young people: Camilla Tyrold and her sisters, the sweet tempered Lavinia and the deformed, but extremely kind, Eugenia, and their cousin, the beautiful Indiana Lynmere. Central theme is the love affair between Camilla herself and her eligible suitor, Edgar Mandlebert. They have many hardships, however, caused by misunderstandings and mistakes, in the path of true love. Frances Burney (1752-1840) was an English satirical novelist, diarist and playwright. She is best known for her novels Evelina, Cecilia, Camilla and The Wanderer. Burney's novels explore the lives of English aristocrats, and satirize their social pretensions and personal foibles, with an eye to larger questions such as the politics of female identity. She has gained critical respect in her own right, but she also foreshadowed such novelists of manners with a satirical bent as Jane Austen and Thackeray.
