However, this book considers them in relation to each other, observing how a study of one can illuminate the works of the others. Going beyond a superficial look at the end-products of these architects, this book examines the philosophical foundations of their work, taking as its central theme the aim of universality, as opposed to the individual and the particular. Each of these three aimed at universality, but for each this concept took on a different form. The universality of De Stijl and artists like Van Doesburg and Mondrian resembled that of the universe itself: it was boundless, going beyond the limits of the canvas and seeking to abolish the wall as the boundary between interior and exterior space. In contrast, each of Le Corbusier’s creations was a self-contained universe within a clear frame, while Mies fluctuated between these two perspectives.

Both the quality of the wheelchair, the individual work capacity, the functionality of the wheelchair/user combination, and the effectiveness of the rehabilitation programme do indeed determine the freedom of mobility. Their optimization is highly dependent upon a continuous and high quality research effort, in combination with regular discussion and dissemination with practitioners. The book intends to give a state of the art view on the current fundamental, clinical and applied research findings and their consequences upon wheelchair propulsion, arm work, wheelchair training and possible consequences of a wheelchair confined life style. Also its implications for rehabilitation, as well as alternative modes of ambulation and activity in the wheelchair confined population, such as functional electrical stimulation and its possible future developments, are dealt with.

Central to the objectives of the argument are the ways in which, firstly, architectural history differs from the traditions of art history, and, secondly, that the historical narrative works its autonomy through theoretical representation, the discursive flow of which is interrupted by the historian’s urge to support arguments with references to buildings, texts, drawings, and historical events. The historians discussed in this volume are those regularly addressed by most critics revisiting modern architectural history. Individual chapters are dedicated to N. Pevsner, H. R. Hitchcock, and S. Giedion, an economy of selection that is formative for a critical understanding of the canon established by these historians. Themes such as periodization, autonomy, and time are discussed, and the coda of the final chapter expands on the scope of “critical historiography” popularised by Kenneth Frampton and Manfredo Tafuri.
