Download or read book The Sopranos written by Dana Polan and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2009-02-20 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “In its original run on HBO, The Sopranos mattered, and it matters still,” Dana Polan asserts early in this analysis of the hit show, in which he sets out to clarify the impact and importance of the series in both its cultural and media-industry contexts. A renowned film and TV scholar, Polan combines a close and extended reading of the show itself—and of select episodes and scenes—with broader attention to the social landscape with which it is in dialogue. For Polan, The Sopranos is a work of playful irony that complicates simplistic attempts to grasp its meanings and values. The show seductively beckons the viewer into an amoral universe, hinting at ways to make sense of its ethically complicated situations, only to challenge the viewer’s complacent grasp of things. It deftly exploits the interplay between art culture and popular culture by mixing elements of art cinema—meandering plots, narrative breaks, and an uncertain progression—with the allure of a soap opera, delving into its characters’ sex lives, mob rivalries, and parent–child conflicts. A show about corrupt figures who parasitically try to squeeze illicit profit from the system, The Sopranos itself seems a target of attempts to glom on to its fame as a successful TV series: attempts by media executives, marketers, critics and writers, and even presidential candidates. “Everyone wants a piece of Sopranos action,” says Polan, and he traces the marketing of the series across both official and unauthorized media platforms, including cookbooks, games, DVDs, and the kitschy Sopranos bus tour. Critiquing previous books on The Sopranos, Polan suggests that in their quest to find deep meaning, many of the authors missed the show’s ironic and comedic side.

Download or read book Leading a Life of Balance written by Women of Faith, and published by HarperChristian Resources. This book was released on 2017-02-28 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of us desire to have balance in our routines. We want to get to the place where our household, work, diet, rest, and exercise schedules are all in perfect harmony. But as believers, we know that if we don’t have spiritual balance, we will never truly have balance in any other area of life. For this reason, we have to consider the state of our heart and determine whether anything is taking priority over God. In this study, readers will have the opportunity to examine our levels of balance and see how they measure up against Jesus’ example. For it is only when we start within—and allow God to work in us—that we can find the equilibrium we need.

Download or read book Angling Admonitions written by Barry Blackstone and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2020-06-02 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contained in this book are one hundred and fifty “fish tales” from fifty years of fishing, shared by an avid fisherman who has also spent the last fifty years fishing for men as a small-town pastor in New England. This accounting of passed fishing trips and fish caught reflects on the spiritual application to the techniques and tactics using in fishing for trout and salmon, and a few other species of fish, to the biblical application for people Jesus called “fishers of men”! In each of these short stories, Pastor Blackstone reveals to his reader the wonderful blessings that come from leading someone to a saving knowledge of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. The author is convinced that Jesus deliberately chose fishermen to be his earliest disciples, men he would call “apostles,” because those Galilean fisherman had the necessary characteristics and qualifications to teach (cast) his gospel and to share it with the multitudes. It is the hope of the writer that this book will not only be of interest to someone that fishes, but ultimately will be found profitable to anyone that wants to share his or her faith in Jesus Christ with others.
Download or read book After the Beginning written by Anthony L. Edridge and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2012-06-27 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new and inspiring view of creation and the Flood After the Beginning offers compelling insight about Gods purpose for an eternal loving relationship with mankind that was made in His image. This theme is revealed in Genesis with the creation of Adam and Eve, with the animals named by Adam, and with the animals that were saved on the ark. From creation through the Flood, Dr. Edridge concludes that the creatures described in Genesis had emotional capability, such as mammals and birds. Further consideration of species that should be included in the creation narrative leads to agreement between the biblical sequence of creation and the scientific chronology of the fossil record and the early stages of the Earths development. Dr. Edridge examines different flood models to determine if they are consistent with biblical parameters and scientific scrutiny. Based on documented flood records and geological events, he proposes a new catastrophic Flood Model that meets both qualitative and quantitative requirements for the most likely flooded area, the cradle of civilization. This model is unique, providing a viable mechanism that caused the Flood to subside, but which agrees with the biblical description.

Download or read book Game Show Confidential written by Boze Hadleigh and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2023-05-01 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Game and quiz shows first started appearing on radio broadcasts in the 1930s, led by the CBS network’s Professor Quiz, hosted by a man who was neither a professor nor even a college graduate, the first of several frauds that seemed to be endemic to the genre. Professor Quiz was followed by other such game shows as Uncle Jim’s Question Bee and Ask It Basket, which in turn spawned successful box games for at-home play. The show Truth or Consequences made the transition from radio to television in the late 1940s and was so popular that a town in New Mexico was named for the show. Television proved to be the perfect platform for game shows since they were very popular and cheap to produce. Even in reruns today, the older shows still draw huge audiences. This book describes the evolution of the game show, its larger-than-life producers and hosts, as well as the scandals that have rocked it from time to time, including bloopers from such “adult” oriented shows as The Dating Game, The Newlywed Game, and Hollywood Squares. This is an entertaining and lively look at an American phenomenon whose popularity doesn’t seem to be going away.
