Book Reed All about It

Download or read book Reed All about It written by Tyrel Reed and published by Ascend Books. This book was released on 2011-10-19 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of all the wonderful players who have worn the crimson and blue for the University of Kansas basketball program through the years, only one can claim to ge the "winningest" Jayhawk of all—Tyrel Reed. Reed, who concluded his playing career in March 2011, has written a new book that chronicles his time with the Jayhawks—Reed All About It: Driven to be a Jayhawk. The book, published by Ascend Books of Overland Park, Kansas, is co-written by former Topeka Capital Journal Sports Columnist Tully Corcoran. Reed was a champion on the court—as part of the Jayhawks' National Championship in 2008—and in the classroom, as a three-time Academic All-Big 12 First Team member. He was part of more wins than any other player in the storied history of the Kansas program. The son of a coach from Burlington, Kansas, Reed developed into an important leader and "glue guy" for the Jayhawks. He was an excellent outside shooter, sinking 170 three-point field goals in his career, and a clutch free throw shooter, with an.810 success rate. In his book, Reed describes what it was like to play for Coach Bill Self, how the game has changed with "one-and-done" freshmen players, and how he was able to excel academically despite the demands of basketball practice and road trips. Told with heart and good humor, Reed All About It: Driven to Be a Jayhawk, is a must-read for any fan of college basketball.

Book Can I Keep My Jersey

Download or read book Can I Keep My Jersey written by Paul Shirley and published by Villard. This book was released on 2008-03-25 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: He’s been called a journeyman. Even Paul wouldn’t dispute that classification. Regardless, Bill Simmons, ESPN’s “The Sports Guy,” has said of Paul Shirley, “We could finally have an answer to the question ‘What would it be like if one of our friends was an NBA player?” There’s no denying that Paul Shirley is the closest thing pro basketball’s got to Odysseus. In Homeric fashion, he has logged time practically everywhere in the roundball universe, from six NBA cities to pro leagues in Spain and Greece to North America’s pro ball Siberia, the minor leagues. Hell, he’s even played in the real Siberia. And in Can I Keep My Jersey?, Shirley finally puts down roots long enough to deliver one of the great locker-room chronicles of the modern age. With sharp elbows and an even sharper wit, Shirley–whose writings have been described as “wildly entertaining” by The Wall Street Journal–drops hilarious commentary, revealing which teams have the best cheerleaders (he’s spent many a time-out watching them ply their trade), why Christ is rapidly becoming every team’s “sixth man,” and even the best ways to get bloodstains out of your game uniform, using only an ordinary bar of soap and a hotel bathroom sink. From sharing the court with Kobe and Shaq to perusing the food court at some mall in a bush-league burg; from taking pregame layups to getting laid out by a stray knee from an NBA power forward; from hopping a limo to the team’s charter jet to dashing to catch the van home from a B-league game in Tijuana, Shirley dishes on what it’s like to try to make it as a professional athlete. Can I Keep My Jersey? is a rollicking, thoughtful, even thought-provoking insider’s look at a pro baller’s life on the fringe. Like Jim Bouton’s Ball Four or John Feinstein’s A Season on the Brink, Shirley’s odyssey deserves to find a home on every sports fan’s bookshelf.

Book Game of My Life Virginia Tech Hokies

Download or read book Game of My Life Virginia Tech Hokies written by Mike Harris and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Virginia Tech’s Shayne Graham trots onto the field at West Virginia on November 6, 1999, with two thoughts in his mind. One is a missed field goal that would have beaten Miami a year earlier. The other is the 44-yard field goal he is about to try against the Mountaineers, a kick he must make if the Hokies are to stay unbeaten and on track for a national championship. Head down, he focuses on his mark as the ball is snapped. He steps forward, the dream of an entire team resting with his leg. Now, hear Graham’s memory of that kick in his own words, for the first time. Game of My Life: Virginia Tech Hokies, first published in 2006, celebrates the extraordinary football and basketball moments that have shaped the college’s rich athletic heritage. Through interviews with some of the school’s most prestigious athletes, Hokies fans can relive the big games that defined the school’s winning tradition. Carroll Dale, later a fixture with the Green Bay Packers, dove—arms outstretched—to haul in a crucial two-point conversion in a 1957 game against the University of Richmond. Les Henson shot from the baseline—the other baseline—as the clock neared zero against Florida State in 1980. Chris Smith went well beyond the "double-double" standard for points and rebounds. How about 30 and 31 against Marshall in 1959? Corey Moore made life miserable for Clemson quarterback Brandon Streeter one night in 1999. Bruce Smith did the same for Duke quarterback Ben Bennett in 1983. The Hokies’ Jim Pyne, meanwhile, made sure Syracuse’s Kevin Mitchell didn’t do the same to Tech quarterback Maurice DeShazo in 1993. Carlos Dixon, Mike Imoh, Andre Davis, Dell Curry, Bryan Still, Don Strock, Bryan Randall—all the Tech greats from the gridiron and hardwood—are in these pages, including coach Frank Beamer. Join thousands of Virginia Tech fans in remembering these cherished stories. For the athletes within, these truly were the games of their lives.
