Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Science Fiction's Original Classic Magazine! This digitally reproduced full edition replica of Galaxy Science Fiction's ground-breaking magazine issue from January 1951 has been brought back to life for a new generation of fans to enjoy! Stories by Isaac Asimov, Fritz Leiber, Theodore Sturgeon and more! Explore the possibilities of life in the future from the perspective of the 1950's pre-spaceflight era. Several of the stories and commentaries in this 65+ year-old publication are stunningly accurate, while others are amusingly way off base . . .or are they??. All are well written and entertaining, with beautiful illustrations and advertisements in the classic 1950's comic book style. Along with commentary by editor H.L. Gold, each Galaxy issue also contains a book review column by anthologist Groff Conklin, and a Willy Ley science column. The stories in this magazine are written by some of science fiction's most beloved authors, including Isaac Asimov, Ray Bradbury, Robert Sheckley, Fritz Leiber, Frederik Pohl & C.M. Kornbluth, just to name a few. This January 1951 issue does not disappoint with stories from ISAAC ASIMOV and THEODORE STURGEON, among others. Established in 1950, Galaxy Science Fiction was a pioneer in Science Fiction magazine publishing. Original editor H. L. Gold was interested in sociology, psychology, and other "soft" sciences, and was also willing to publish humorous and satirical stories. Science Fiction historian David Kyle commented in his book A Pictorial History of Science Fiction, 1979, that "of all the editors in and out of the post-war scene, the most influential beyond any doubt was H. L. Gold". The editorship of Galaxy passed from H.L. Gold to Frederik Pohl and then to Ejler Jakobsson during the 1960s. Set in a world where intelligence is a rarity, this compelling narrative challenges readers to reflect on the consequences of societal complacency and the loss of critical thought. As the story unfolds, we are introduced to a protagonist navigating a dystopian society filled with the "marching morons"—people who blindly follow the status quo. What happens when the few intelligent individuals are left to contend with a populace that prioritizes entertainment over enlightenment? Kornbluth masterfully explores these questions, crafting a narrative that is both cautionary and deeply engaging. The Marching Morons is celebrated for its sharp social commentary and dark humor. Kornbluth's insightful prose and vivid characterization create a thought-provoking experience that resonates with contemporary readers, prompting them to consider the implications of their own choices in a rapidly evolving world. Readers are drawn to The Marching Morons for its relevance and ability to inspire critical thinking. This book is a must-read for anyone interested in the intersection of science fiction and social critique, offering a glimpse into a future that serves as a mirror to our present realities. Book excerpt: Featuring man's staggering journey to the stars... In a Tenn's-eye view of the world, "staggering" can be interpreted in more ways than one, of course. Notably - The warm, human interpretation The feminist interpretation The green-transparent-bubble interpretation The man-in-the-street interpretation Mr. Tenn has included a charming witch tale, a really delicious vampire item, and a superior machine (intergalactic hit) story. These have nothing to do with man's staggering journey to the stars. They are simply here to add to the confusion. Then again, why couldn't they have something to do with the square root of man?

Earth, as he soon learns, is a backwater, just a pebble in the sky, despised by all the other 200 million planets of the Empire because its people dare to claim it's the original home of man. And Earth is poor, with great areas of radioactivity ruining much of its soil--so poor that everyone is sentenced to death at the age of sixty. Joseph Schwartz is sixty-two. This is young Isaac Asimov's first novel, full of wonders and ideas, the book that launched the novels of the Galactic Empire, culminating in the Foundation series. First came the news that a flying saucer had landed in Iowa. Then came the announcement that the whole thing was a hoax. End of story. Case closed. What the humans know, they know. What the slugs want, no matter what, the human will do. And most of Iowa is already under their control. Sam Cavanaugh was one of the agents who discovered the truth. Unfortunately, that was just before he was taken over by one of the aliens and began working for the invaders, with no will of his own. And he has just learned that a high official in the Treasury Department is now under control of the aliens. Since the Treasury Department includes the Secret Service, which safeguards the President of the United States, control of the entire nation is near at hand .

Book What s He Doing in There

Download or read book What s He Doing in There written by Fritz Leiber and published by eStar Books. This book was released on 2011-06-01 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: He went where no Martian ever went before--but would he come out--or had he gone for good?ExcerptThe Professor was congratulating Earth's first visitor from another planet on his wisdom in getting in touch with a cultural anthropologist before contacting any other scientists (or governments, God forbid!), and in learning English from radio and TV before landing from his orbit-parked rocket, when the Martian stood up and said hesitantly, "Excuse me, please, but where is it?"That baffled the Professor and the Martian seemed to grow anxious--at least his long mouth curved upward, and he had earlier explained that it curling downward was his smile--and he repeated, "Please, where is it?"He was surprisingly humanoid in most respects, but his complexion was textured so like the rich dark armchair he'd just been occupying that the Professor's pin-striped gray suit, which he had eagerly consented to wear, seemed an arbitrary interruption between him and the chair--a sort of Mother Hubbard dress on a phantom conjured from its leather. The Professor's Wife, always a perceptive hostess, came to her husband's rescue by saying with equal rapidity, "Top of the stairs, end of the hall, last door."The Martian's mouth curled happily downward and he said, "Thank you very much," and was off.Comprehension burst on the Professor. He caught up with his guest at the foot of the stairs."Here, I'll show you the way," he said."No, I can find it myself, thank you," the Martian assured him.
