In the eastern North Pacific, five families are represented: the true cods (Gadidae), grenadiers (Macrouridae), codlings (Moridae), hakes (Merlucciidae), and arrowtails (Melanonidae). Members of this order are among the most familiar fishes of the North Pacific and they support some of the largest fisheries in the world. Although worldwide a few gadiforms are occasionally found in freshwater, with the exception of a single freshwater species, the burbot (Lota lota), all species in the eastern North Pacific are exclusively marine. They occupy a broad range of habitats from shallow arctic waters to some of the deepest waters of the North Pacific.This guide describes the gadiforms found in the marine waters of the eastern North Pacific and Arctic oceans adjacent to North America from the Alaska arctic to the U.S.-Mexico border, as well as the burbot, the only gadiform species found in freshwater. Book excerpt: Objectives of the paper are to provide dichotomous keys for the identification of ophidiiform genera. For each genus a brief account is presented including synonymy, a short diagnosis, a list of species, distribution, references, when possible comments on relationships, and for most an outline drawing. The genera are organized into an hierarchical classification which divides them into two suborders, Ophidioidei, which contains oviparous fishes with a high anterior nostril, and Bythitoidei which contains viviparous fishes with a low anterior nostril. Ophidioidei is divided into two families. Carapidae, with a vexillifer larval stage, has two subfamilies: Pyramodontinae with two genera and Carapinae with four. Ophidiidae has four subfamilies: Brotulinae, with a single genus; Brotulotaeniinae (new family) with a single genus; Ophidiinae, the cusk eels, with eight genera in two tribes; and Neobythitinae, with 38 genera (Epetriodus and Spottobrotula are new genera based on new species from the Indian Ocean) in two tribes. Bythitoidei contains two families, one of which, Aphyonidae has five genera characterized by many neotenic features. Bythitidae is divided into the free-tailed Brosmophycinae with 13 genera in two tribes and Bythitinae with 15 genera.

For fish, the new species are those whose presence in the Adriatic Sea was recorded recently, since the year 2000. For decapod crustaceans, only alien species found in the Adriatic Sea after the Second World War are dealt with. In total, 15 crustaceans and 52 fish species were selected and presented in this handbook. Following an introductory section, giving a general overview on the Adriatic Sea geographical characteristics, this document reviews, in its first part, the ichthyofauna and decapod crustaceans in the area. The second part of the document provides a description of each new species including synonyms, meristic formula, main morphologic features, bio-ecology, known geographical distribution, relevance and reference literature. This work was designed and implemented within the framework of the FAO-AdriaMed Project “Scientific Cooperation to Support Responsible Fisheries in the Adriatic Sea”.

Book excerpt: This book attempts to move the family of squirrels (Sciuridae) out of the shadow of large charismatic mammals and to highlight management failures with the goal of moving towards an improved conservation approach. Particular attention is paid to the influence of taxonomic science on squirrel conservation. In addition, the authors show how human-driven climate change, global change and modern politics are shaping global squirrel populations as well as their surrounding environments and ecosystems. Squirrels are widespread around the globe, naturally occurring on every continent except Antarctica and Oceania, and they are certainly among the animals most commonly encountered in everyday life. Despite this, the authors of this volume identify worrying gaps in squirrel conservation. Squirrels are often hunted, trapped, poached, and stressed, and management strategies and legislation are often devised in the absence of proper knowledge of issues such as population sizes, taxonomies, and trends. Together, this can result in severe population declines and even species extinction. By assessing their taxonomic situation, ecology, the evolution and divergence of Sciuridae around the globe, and squirrels’ well-being across habitats, the authors set a baseline from which to launch future investigations into the conservation of squirrels and other species. Additionally, the authors highlight the influences of climate change, unsustainable growth, and various man-made threats to the future of this family.
