Book The Georgia Catalog Historic American Buildings Survey

Download or read book The Georgia Catalog Historic American Buildings Survey written by John Linley and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 1982 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the elegant townhouses of Savannah to the towering hotel and office complexes of Atlanta, the state of Georgia has a distinguished architectural tradition. No other work documents this rich heritage as comprehensively as The Georgia Catalog. Prepared under the auspices of the Historic American Buildings Survey, this carefully researched and beautifully illustrated volume will be an invaluable resource for architects, preservationists, historians, and those who own the historic houses or who simply are interested in Georgia’s architectural legacy. The book is in two parts. The first is a history of and guide to the architecture of the state. John Linley begins his survey with the remains of prehistoric civilization and the architecture of the first European settlers. He traces the development of a native architecture in the state, the flowering of the Greek Revival style, the functional architecture of commerce and industry, and the energy and imagination of urban architecture in the late twentieth century. The text reflects the author’s interest in the rationale and logic that produced the architecture and in the lessons that the past has for the present and the future. He also emphasizes the influence of climate, ecology, landscape, and city planning on both historic and contemporary architecture. The second section of The Georgia Catalog is a complete, updated listing of nearly four hundred sites in the Historic American Buildings Survey. Each entry gives the precise location of the site; a brief description of the structure; the date of construction and the name of the architect, if known; changes in name structure, or location of the building; its present condition; any facts of historical significance; and the number and dates of drawings, photographs, and data sheets in the HABS collection at the Library of Congress. To add to its value as a guide, the volume also includes a glossary of architectural terms and a list of Georgia properties that are included in the National Register of Historic Places, have been designated National Landmarks, or are part of the Historic American Engineering Record.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A landmark survey, offering a nuanced and deeply researched account of the career and life of the iconic modern architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (1886-1969) was a German-born American architect and designer whose work in Europe and North America has had an enduring influence on modern and contemporary architecture worldwide. During his sixty-year career, he fundamentally rethought architectural types that shaped modern life, including the office building, apartment building, and private home. True to his alleged dictum "less is more," Mies van der Rohe's style is characterized by utmost simplicity, elegance of materials, and radical formal and functional innovation, as exemplified by such iconic projects as the Farnsworth House in Plano, Illinois, and the Seagram Building in New York. In this book, renowned architectural historian Dietrich Neumann presents a new, critical look at Mies and complicates the established narrative about him. Diverging from the reverential posture of many existing accounts, Neumann insists on the importance of the contemporary context--social, political, and architectural--for understanding the architect's life and work. The book draws on many overlooked archival and primary sources to demonstrate how and why Mies's designs were shaped and received, foregrounding contemporary critics' responses and the work of Mies's collaborators and peers. It presents several previously unknown buildings, projects, and furniture designs and challenges long-established interpretations of key works. Comprehensively illustrated and covering the entirety of Mies's career, this ambitious book is the most substantial account to date of the life and work of one of the most important architects of the twentieth century.

Book Greening Our Built World

Download or read book Greening Our Built World written by Greg Kats and published by Island Press. This book was released on 2013-03-05 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Green” buildings—buildings that use fewer resources to build and to sustain—are commonly thought to be too expensive to attract builders and buyers. But are they? The answer to this question has enormous consequences, since residential and commercial buildings together account for nearly 50% of American energy consumption—including at least 75% of electricity usage—according to recent government statistics. This eye-opening book reports the results of a large-scale study based on extensive financial and technical analyses of more than 150 green buildings in the U.S. and ten other countries. It provides detailed findings on the costs and financial benefits of building green. According to the study, green buildings cost roughly 2% more to build than conventional buildings—far less than previously assumed—and provide a wide range of financial, health and social benefits. In addition, green buildings reduce energy use by an average of 33%, resulting in significant cost savings. Greening Our Built World also evaluates the cost effectiveness of “green community development” and presents the results of the first-ever survey of green buildings constructed by faith-based organizations. Throughout the book, leading practitioners in green design—including architects, developers, and property owners—share their own experiences in building green. A compelling combination of rock-solid facts and specific examples, this book proves that green design is both cost-effective and earth-friendly.
