Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every civilization in history has faced moments of overwhelming existential crises, and they all eventually collapsed. Was this failure inherent in the evolution of civilization, something within the human species, or a combination of both? More importantly, was it predictable and unavoidable? Most civilizations believed they had a special relationship with the divine and were beyond the laws of nature. Our current economic civilization is now global and interdependent. Today’s economy is responsible for the most rapid mass extinction in Earth’s history. We face imminent catastrophic climate change and environmental disruption, yet the same sense of exceptionalism and hubris clouds humanity’s judgement and ability to act rationally. Environmental disruption is making the planet uninhabitable. No economy can consume its way out of scarcity. This law of nature conflicts with many longstanding economic theories. Sheltered and self-absorbed elitists promote lies and prey on humanity’s most vulnerable instincts of pecking order, conformity, and obedience to authority. These primal instincts may be maladapted to civilization in its current form. Today’s elitists are choosing mass extinction in a false belief in their own invincibility. To survive, humanity can no longer follow delusional leaders to self-destruction. In non-technical language, the author explores common phases in the development of past civilizations, and the critical junctures and decisions that made collapse inevitable. He investigates the linkages and contradictions between human social behavior, the economy, and the environment. In the closing pages, he identifies a clear path to redemption.

Book Confronting Future Challenges

Download or read book Confronting Future Challenges written by Fernando Reimers and published by Chambers. This book was released on 1995 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The simultaneous presence of a revolutionary change in information technologies and a growing demand for fundamental changes in the education system have set in motion a reassessment of the relationship among information, research, and decision making. The International Bureau of Education (IBE) considered it necessary to introduce new elements into the discussion based on the conclusions of a series of new case studies on the use of research in the process of educational change and on the ways that educational information and documentation systems function. There are two studies presented here, "Using Research in Educational Policy and Administrative Decision-Making" (Fernando Reimers and Noel McGinn) and "Information Availability and Its Impact on Educational Policy-Making, Planning, and Decision-Making: Implications for Educational Information Services" (Kate Wild), that IBE considers propitious to publish in a single volume. The thesis of the first paper is that supporting decision-making with research-based knowledge is a complex undertaking. A fruitful strategy involves identifying and addressing the multiple groups of stakeholders involved as part of the research process. The purpose of the second paper is to explore the relationship between the availability of information and improvements in the effectiveness of educational systems, particularly, but not exclusively, as it relates to the reporting of research results, and to examine the implications for information and documentation services. The basic objective of this publication is to promote a dialogue among the three main partners in this process--political decision-makers, researchers, and documentalists--based on systematic and up-to-date information. Such a dialogue should lead to a reduction in the rifts, misunderstandings, stereotypes, and obstructions that have often weakened the outcomes of this work. (MAS)

Book Housing the Environment and Our Changing Climate

Download or read book Housing the Environment and Our Changing Climate written by Christoph Sinn and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The climate is changing, and this book aims to capture both ways in which this is true. First, the global warming which is taking place, as our atmosphere is forced to absorb ever more man-made carbon dioxide, is now an indisputable reality. It is not too late to prevent the worst effects of such climate change, but in any event it will have a profound impact on the way we live and the kinds of houses we need. Second, the climate is changing - albeit slowly - in terms of the response by the housing world to the challenge of global warming. Government has instigated a radical approach to environmental standards for new housing, but has arguably been slower to realise the urgency of action to tackle poor environmental standards in the existing housing stock. This completely new version of the earlier book Housing and the Environment - A new agenda concentrates on the linked issues of climate change, fuel shortages and fuel poverty.
