Or are we headed for an inevitable Malthusian catastrophe because the task is impossible? What can developing countries do to increase agricultural self-reliance? What population dynamics accompany the transition from high birth and death rates in developing countries to low birth and death rates? What research can aid the struggle to provide food to the world's masses? These and other questions are explored by an array of experts who participated in the Congressional Roundtable on World Food and Population during 1979-80. They offer this collection of papers in the spirit of optimism about the future and about the U.S. role in international development.

Download or read book Kytos written by John Von Kesmark and published by Troubador Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2008 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second book in "The Rathing Chronicles" trilogy, "Kytos - The Dark Beyond" covers events in Britain in 2078. The half-rat half human Rathings rule with an iron fist but have to rely on press-ganged humans to run the country and the economy, which is crumbling due to trade and travel embargoes imposed by the rest of the world. The Rathings are just one of the breeds of hybrid mutants let loose on the world as a result of The Kytos Project - a genetic engineering, hybrid cloning programme almost 60 years earlier. A disillusioned and altruistic Rathing General and a cabal of senior officers plan to overthrow their government and launch an invasion, initially into Europe, and then further afield with a view to conquering the world.By accepting the assistance of an amoral Rathing Senator from the parallel future dimension, the General unknowingly takes the first step to being manipulated by the duplicitous Senator, who has his own dark agenda. With unrest mounting amongst the Rathing military and elite, a showdown between government forces and rebel troops is inevitable. An epic battle eventually takes place between the two factions. The losing General is captured and executed in a barbaric manner. Meanwhile, a young human called Ashok is laying down his own battle plans. He wants to destroy the Rathings before they mature from their embryonic stage, as he holds them responsible for the death of his parents. The only way he can do so is to return to the past through a Time Gate and persuade the scientist who created the clones to stop his experiment. But his plans are dashed at every turn and his determination to stop the creation of the clones puts two friends' lives in mortal danger. And there's the mystery surrounding the assassination of dozens of Rathings. A small mound of residual molecular dust left at each of the crime scenes is a tell-tale sign that the killers may be etheric beings from another dimension. The pressure is on Rathing investigators to catch these shadow souls before they murder more of their kinsfolk. With Rathing and human lives in peril, the challenges Ashok and the General must overcome change each of their lives forever.

Download or read book Time and Experience written by Peter Mcinerney and published by Temple University Press. This book was released on 1992-12-15 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the only contemporary, systematic study of the relationship of time and conscious experience. Peter K. Mclnerney examines three tightly interconnected issues: how we are able to be conscious of time and temporal entities, whether time exists independently of conscious experience, and whether the conscious experiencer exists in time in the same way that ordinary natural objects are thought to exist in time. Insight is drawn from the views of major phenomenological and existential thinkers on these issues. Building on a detailed explication and critique of the views of Kant, Husserl, Heidegger, and Sartre, Mclnerney develops and defends his own positions. He argues that a revised version of Husserl’s three-feature theory of time-consciousness provides the best explanation of our awareness of temporal features, but that an independently real time is necessary to explain our experience of temporal passage. He also shows that human existence has some special temporal features in addition to those it shares with other entities. Time-consciousness, the conscious exercise of powers, and personal identity through time require that any temporal part of human existence be defined by and "reach across" to earlier and later parts.

Book excerpt: Advances in the materials and the digitalization of architecture bring about new methods in design and construction. Whereas traditional timber construction consists of pre-cut and pre-assembled timber sections, modern timber buildings today consist of elaborate wood-based materials. Owing to their flexibility and good properties in terms of building physics and ecology, these wood-based materials are ideal for computer-aided building component production. Fifteen case examples from research, teaching, and practical applications provide inspiring insights into the potential of formable wood-based materials and digital design: Woven Wood, Wood Foam, Living Wood and Organic Joints, Timber Joints for Robotic Building Processes, Efficiencies of Wood, Designing with Tree Form.

Download or read book England s Cross of Gold written by James Ashley Morrison and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2021-09-15 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In England's Cross of Gold, James Ashley Morrison challenges the conventional view that the UK's ruinous return to gold in 1925 was inevitable. Instead, he offers a new perspective on the struggles among elites in London to define and redefine the gold standard—from the first discussions during the Great War; through the titanic ideological clash between Winston Churchill and John Maynard Keynes; to the final, ill-fated implementation of the "new gold standard." Following World War I, Churchill promised to restore the ancient English gold standard—and thus Britain's greatness. Keynes portended that this would prove to be one of the most momentous—and ill-advised—decisions in financial history. From the vicious peace settlement at Versailles to the Great Depression, the gold standard was central to the worst disasters of the time. Economically, Churchill's move exacerbated the difficulties of repairing economies shattered by war. Politically, it set countries at odds as each endeavored to amass gold, sowing the seeds of further strife. England's Cross of Gold, grounded in masterful archival research, reveals that these events turned crucially on the beliefs of a handful of pivotal policymakers. It recasts the legends of Churchill, Keynes, and their collision, and it shows that the gold standard itself was a metaphysical abstraction rooted more in mythology than material reality.

Download or read book The Rise of the Antichrist written by Lowell B. Hudson and published by Pletho. This book was released on 2018-11-13 with total page 489 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Does the idea of Biblical Prophecy seem ... well, laughingly absurd, galactically improbable? Good! It's supposed to seem that way. In fact, for Biblical prophecy to work properly, its readers have to be highly skeptical. Biblical prophecy requires, even promotes uber-skepticism at times to evoke the intended response in its readers. The credibility of its message, that its words were authored by God, gains increased potency as the highly improbable happens again and again. When the absurdly improbable actually occurs, over and over, in documented, historically verifiable situations, our fundamental assumptions are challenged. We are confronted with the possibility that, on a truly foundational level, everything we thought we knew may really be wrong or radically incomplete. That's what Biblical prophecy is about on a macro level. That's its big idea. Biblical prophecies also seek to warn about particularly important slices of future history. Not because that future can be changed, but so it can be met with integrity and intact faith. This book is obviously focused on those Biblical prophecies involving the Antichrist's rise to power. By using careful time honored traditional methods of Biblical investigation, we'll have a serious and sober look at what the Scriptures really say about this future world ruler. There are also some new discoveries that many would find surprising, even shocking. Now, that's a lot to swallow all at once. That the future is knowable on some level, and that it's going to be so horrible. Why would anyone want to believe this could happen? Deep down, I don't want to believe it. It's so much easier to reject it, than to allow it to threaten your whole frame of reference. That tug of war, that vague unease, that's supposed to happen too. It's Biblical prophecy doing its thing. It takes a lot of guts to consider ideas that have the power to explode your comfortable world view. If you decide to read this book, remember, it's ok to be skeptical. It's absolutely required for a healthy mind. But resist the awful temptation to reject out-of-hand. Aside from being an addictive and lazy habit, it just may deprive you someday of knowing that wonderful excruciating panic of having your mind blown open.
