Book The Genus Aeromonas

Download or read book The Genus Aeromonas written by Brian Austin and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is recognized that aeromonads form the dominant component of the eutrophic freshwater aerobic bacterial population and over the last ten years the many facets of the organisms have attracted much attention. This timely publication presents the latest developments in the biology of Aeromonas and draws on the expertise of an international team of contributors to provide an authoritative and enlightening account of the many species in this genus. Early chapters deal with the taxonomy, isolation and enumeration, and identification of aeromonads. The book goes on to describe subtyping methods for Aeromonas species, the ecology of mesophilic Aeromonas in the aquatic environment, human pathogens (diarrhoeal disease), Aeromonas species in disease of animals, fish pathogens, pathogenic mechanisms, toxins and the Aeromonas hydrophila group in food. This commendable reference source will be of value to all medical and veterinary microbiologists, public health scientists and microbial ecologists.

Book Use of Flumequine Against Furunculosis in Salmonids Therapeutic Trials and Practical Perspectives

Download or read book Use of Flumequine Against Furunculosis in Salmonids Therapeutic Trials and Practical Perspectives written by and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aeromonas salmonicida-induced furunculosis is currently the primary cause of bacterial death in freshwater-reared salmonids, with oral treatment with antibiotics the only means of control. There is a fairly substantial failure rate due to drug resistance, therefore any new molecule which can be assimilated by ingestion and is effective would be welcome, providing it is not expensive. Flumequine is a quinoline compound synthesized by Riker Laboratories and widely used as an antibacterial agent in humans and various animal species. This paper reports on a series of therapeutic trials with rainbow and fario trout fingerlings in a laboratory setting using a relatively well standardized infection model developed by Michel in 1980.

Book Bacterial Fish Pathogens

  • ISBN : 9400748841
  • Pages : 678 pages

Download or read book Bacterial Fish Pathogens written by Brian Austin and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-08-31 with total page 678 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This completely updated fifth edition of Bacterial Fish Pathogens is a comprehensive discussion of the biological aspects of the bacteria which cause disease in farmed and wild fish. Since the 4th edition was published in 2007, there has been an upturn in the application of molecular approaches to taxonomy, diagnosis and vaccine development. New pathogens, e.g. Aeromonas schubertii, have been described. Also, there has been the emergence of diseases caused by bacteria which have not been cultured, and which have been equated with new taxa, i.e. ‘Candidatus’. Consideration is given to all the bacterial fish pathogens, including primary pathogens and opportunists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second edition of Microbiology of Waterborne Diseases describes the diseases associated with water, their causative agents and the ways in which they gain access to water systems. The book is divided into sections covering bacteria, protozoa, and viruses. Other sections detail methods for detecting and identifying waterborne microorganisms, and the ways in which they are removed from water, including chlorine, ozone, and ultraviolet disinfection. The impact of global warming and climate change phenomena on waterborne illnesses are also discussed. This book serves as an indispensable reference for public health microbiologists, water utility scientists, research water pollution microbiologists environmental health officers, consultants in communicable disease control and microbial water pollution students. Focuses on the microorganisms of most significance to public health, including E. coli, cryptosporidium, and enterovirus Highlights the basic microbiology, clinical features, survival in the environment, and gives a risk assessment for each pathogen Contains new material on antimicrobial resistance and biofilms Covers drinking water and both marine and freshwater recreational bathing waters

Book Bacterial Fish Pathogens

Download or read book Bacterial Fish Pathogens written by Brian Austin and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1993-09-30 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Expanded and updated, this second edition considers fish diseases in the context of the fish's environment, and includes coverage of many aspects of microbiology. The authors provide information on the structure of fish in order to help familiarize readers with general fish anatomy. All the bacterial taxa which have been reported as fish pathogens are included, and the material is subdivided for easy reference into sections which deal with characteristics of the diseases, isolation methods, characterization of the pathogens, diagnosis, epizootilogy, pathogenicity mechanisms and control. Written by bacteriologists for microbiologists, the book tabulates the identification procedures, and gives characteristics of pathogens, the diseases and their control. As farmed fish are of greater commercial importance, and the consequences of losses attributable to bacterial fish pathogens therefore of greater economic consequence, the authors concentrate on these rather than on wild stocks.

Book Furunculosis Surveys and Management at Atlantic Salmon Barrier Pools

Download or read book Furunculosis Surveys and Management at Atlantic Salmon Barrier Pools written by and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Furunculosis (Aeromonas salmonicida) is a bacterial disease responsible for adult Atlantic salmon mortality. This report attempts to summarize furunculosis disease background information for the Restigouche and Saint John drainages in New Brunswick and reviews attempts by the provincial Dept. of Natural Resources & Energy to minimize the disease at fish barrier pools on the Upsalquitch and Tobique rivers. Work carried out included utilization of a counting fence and fish containment barrier to assess and protect adult Atlantic salmon, application of antibiotic (flumequine) therapy to salmon entering river pools, and conducting mortality surveys. Recommendations are made for further studies and for minimizing the impact of this disease.
