Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Revealing pairings of a chair and a building by each architect—featuring fifty-five stars from Calatrava to Hadid Does an architect’s style always come across, regardless of medium? Pairing great buildings with great chairs by the same architect, Chairs by Architects demonstrates how the defining qualities of a building’s style can also be evident in that architect’s furniture designs. Pieces of furniture, like manifestos, become signatures of architectural style. The fifty-five architects featured here include early modern architectural pioneers such as Otto Wagner, Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Antoni Gaudí, and Walter Gropius, together with more recent modern masters such as Oscar Niemeyer, Santiago Calatrava, Zaha Hadid, Frank Gehry, and Daniel Libeskind. The book contains interviews on Designing (in conversation with David Adjaye), Manufacturing (with David E. Bright, Knoll, Inc.), Selling (with Zeev Aram), Collecting (with Richard Wright), and Preserving (with Susanne Graner, Vitra Design Museum). This is essential reading for everyone concerned with design, architecture, and the relationship between creators and their creations.

Book excerpt: Alvar Aalto (1898-1976) is the most prestigious Finnish architect of the last century, and the father of Nordic Modernism. He once said, God created paper for the purpose of drawing architecture on it. Everything else is at least for me an abuse of paper. In the U.S. Aalto's critical reception began with his design for the Finnish Pavilion at the 1939 World Fair in New York: Frank Lloyd Wright described it as a work of genius. After World War II, Aalto also designed MIT's student dormitory. Prior to this, the architect's Paimio Sanatorium (1929) and Viipuri Library (1935), both in Finland, had already attracted international praise. He was also an outstanding town planner, painter and sculptor. Aalto's Modernism entailed the use of natural materials, warm colors, and undulating lines, and he is considered an important early exponent of Organic Design as a result. Of his design work outside of architecture, Aalto's vases, lamps, glassware and laminated bent-plywood furniture (pioneered and produced through the design company he co-founded, Artek) are equally esteemed. Iconic pieces include the Savoy Vase, the Paimio Chair and the Beehive Lamp. This monograph on Aalto's highly collectible furniture designs expands our understanding of the diverse abilities of this influential architect/designer.

  • Pages : 278 pages

Download or read book Furniture Studio written by Jeffrey Karl Ochsner and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Furniture Studio explores the origins, methods, results, and influence of the unique and highly successful furniture design and fabrication studios offered by the University of Washington Department of Architecture. The furniture program, initiated by Andris Vanags, is an immersion into the role of materials, design, and making in architectural education. Students directly engage the physical properties of materials, and the knowledge gained through this engagement enriches the design and fabrication process. The experiences of its graduates reveal that the studio fosters creative thinking that truly integrates design and making. Ochsner presents historical background to shop-based courses, including furniture studio; traces the careers of four representative graduates of the program; and suggests implications from this program for architectural education and individual achievement beyond the University of Washington. Eleven students and the projects they created in the winter 2009 studio are profiled, and the book contains a fully illustrated catalogue of exemplary student projects from 1989 to the present. Illustrations and descriptions throughout the book showcase the heirloom-quality projects created by the students, many of which won awards in competitions. "Jeffrey Ochsner has written a book that will be invaluable to furniture historians, furniture makers, architects, and design educators. The book's great strength is its telling of a local, personal story within a broader context of architectural pedagogy and philosophy." -Edward Cooke, author of Making Furniture in Pre-Industrial America Jeffrey Karl Ochsner is professor of architecture and associate dean for academic affairs, College of Built Environments, University of Washington. He is the author of Lionel H. Pries, Architect, Artist, Educator and coauthor of Distant Corner: Seattle Architects and the Legacy of H. H. Richardson.

Book Eileen Gray

Download or read book Eileen Gray written by Eileen Gray and published by Ediciones Polígrafa S.A.. This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neglected for most of her career, Eileen Gray (1878-1976) is now regarded as one of the most important furniture designers and architects of the early 20th century and the most influential woman in those fields. Her work inspired both modernism and Art Deco. Eileen Gray was to "stand alone" throughout her career, first as a lacquer artist, then a furniture designer, and finally as an architect. At a time when other leading designers were almost all male and mostly members of one movement or another -whether a loose grouping like De Stijl in the Netherlands or a formal one such as the Congres Internationaux d'Architecture Moderne-she remained staunchly independent. Her design style was as distinctive as her way of working, and Gray developed an opulent, luxuriant take on geometric forms and industrially produced materials used by the International Style designers, such as Le Corbusier, Charlotte Perriand and Mies Van der Rohe, who shared many of her ideals. Her voluptuous leather and tubular steel Bibendum Chair and clinically chic E-1027 glass and tubular steel table are now icons of the International Style. SELLING POINTS: * In addition to an introductory essay, this book analyses the main designs of these key modern architects through sketches, drawings, photos of the original works, and shots of period settings * A full illustrated chronology of all the featured works completes each volume. Reflecting the series' focus on design, special attention has been paid to the layout and binding, making these books designer objects in their own right. 180 illustrations

Book Now I Sit Me Down

Download or read book Now I Sit Me Down written by Witold Rybczynski and published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux. This book was released on 2016-08-23 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you ever wondered where rocking chairs came from, or why cheap plastic chairs are suddenly everywhere? In Now I Sit Me Down, the distinguished architect and writer Witold Rybczynski chronicles the history of the chair from the folding stools of pharaonic Egypt to the ubiquitous stackable monobloc chairs of today. He tells the stories of the inventor of the bentwood chair, Michael Thonet, and of the creators of the first molded-plywood chair, Charles and Ray Eames. He reveals the history of chairs to be a social history--of different ways of sitting, of changing manners and attitudes, and of varying tastes. The history of chairs is the history of who we are. We learn how the ancient Chinese switched from sitting on the floor to sitting in a chair, and how the iconic chair of Middle America--the Barcalounger--traces its roots back to the Bauhaus. Rybczynski weaves a rich tapestry that draws on art and design history, personal experience, and historical accounts. And he pairs these stories with his own delightful hand-drawn illustrations: colonial rockers and English cabrioles, languorous chaise longues, and no-nonsense ergonomic task chairs--they're all here. The famous Danish furniture designer Hans Wegner once remarked, "A chair is only finished when someone sits in it." As Rybczynski tells it, the way we choose to sit and what we choose to sit on speak volumes about our values, our tastes, and the things we hold dear.

Book Carlo Mollino

Download or read book Carlo Mollino written by Napoleone Ferrari and published by Park Publishing (WI). This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First-ever monograph on Carlo Mollino as an architect. Demonstrates Mollino's prowess in architectural design. Based on extensive new research and drawing on rich archival material. Lavishly illustrated with previously unpublished images, plans, drawings, and documents. Today, Italian architect and designer Carlo Mollino (1905-73) is known chiefly for his furniture designs. He is famous also for his erotic polaroid photography of the 1960s, which has been subject of many exhibitions and has lost nothing of its great appeal to the fashion world today. Much less attention has so far been given to Mollino's architecture, and a comprehensive critical study of his work in this field has been lacking. Yet his built work, although relatively small, constitutes a seminal contribution to modernism that is uniquely marked by a strong relationship with Surrealism. Based on years of research and drawing on rich archival material as well as on Mollino's own writings, this new book is the overdue tribute to an extraordinary personality in 20th-century architecture. It features an exemplary selection of his key designs, both built and unrealised, lavishly illustrated with images and reproductions of previously unpublished plans, drawings, and documents. Rounded out with scholarly essays by expert authors, this is a long-awaited addition to the library of architecture lovers, professionals, and scholars.

Book Dust Free Friends

Download or read book Dust Free Friends written by 6a Architects and published by Park Publishing (WI). This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dust Free Friends is a series of designs for small pieces of domestic furniture, designed by London-based 6a architects, that can be made very simply at home, in restricted spaces, with a small number of tools and without specialist skills. The lightness and simplicity of the pieces is derived from a combination of observation of the way simple plywood constructions on a construction site are adapted to become stools, tables, steps, and stairs, changing quickly and without fuss as workers need them. The designs also re-examine the long tradition of self-build that has shared the journey through modernism with industry and craft. In the early 1970s, Italian designer Enzo Mari (born 1932) published his seminal book of self-build furniture, Autoprogettazione ("Self-design," "Self-production," "Self-build" http: //www.corraini.com/en/catalogo/scheda_libro/62/Autoprogettazione), in direct competition with an expanding consumer market. Using rough sawn softwood, held together only by nails, the method matched the ad-hoc-ism and toolset of the time. Forty years later, affordable designer consumerism has more or less replaced old-fashioned messy DIY from our homes. Apple and Ikea have replaced amateurish tinkering with pleasure and promise sealed inside immaculate capsules. Today, the new lithium batteries at the heart of our wireless world have also revolutionized what we can do. With the cordless drill and self-tapping screw in one hand and the dust-free precision of the Festool saw in the other, the world of self-made furniture has re-opened with unprecedented speed and ease. With the Dust Free Friends series, Tom Emerson and Stephanie Macdonald invite the reader of this new book to make his or her own everyday furniture from dressed plywood. The rules the lay-out are easy to follow, end even more easy to change, to make best use of the sheet of plywood with the smallest number of cuts and least wastage. While almost every household has a cordless drill, rather fewer have a handheld electric saw. It is a useful addition but this can also be borrowed or rented--try your nearest designer, artist, or architect friend, there is bound to be one nearby. Precision and patience are more important than skill. Beautifully produced and illustrated with some 90 easy-to-understand diagrams and images, Dust Free Friends is a comprehensive, precise, and entertaining, manual to furnishing a comfortable place entirely by its users.
