Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fur Farming: A Book of Information About Fur Bearing Animals, Enclosures, Habits, Care, Etc Some animals, it is true, do well in fairly thickly-settled sections. Among animals of this kind are red fox, skunk, mink and muskrat. Yet no furbearer can hold its numbers against the ever-increasing number of trappers and the persistency with which they now seek the fur producers. North America furnishes a large per cent. Of the furs of the world - foxes, mink, otter, beaver, skunk, marten, lynx, coon, opossum, muskrat, wolves, etc. Considerable quantities of fine furs are still secured in parts of Russia, in Europe and Siberia in Asia; Australia furnishes great quantities of opossum, while from parts of South America, the trade in chinchilla is large. Yet North America has been for centuries, the great fur-producing continent and now that trapping is being pressed harder than ever and the natural haunts of the animals are becoming less each year, the question is, where will the future sup ply come from? Book Maintenance of the Fur Supply Classic Reprint

Download or read book Maintenance of the Fur Supply Classic Reprint written by Ned Dearborn and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Maintenance of the Fur Supply Directly or indirectly, fur contributes to the support or comfort of a large proportion of our population. We import as much fur as we produce. In other words, we could sell at home twice as much fur as we are now producing - not to speak of the foreign demand. The greater part of the fur grown in the United States comes from privately owned land. Landowners can increase and improve the fur taken on their property and make of it a regular source of income. A few species of fur-bearing animals have been domesticated, but with the single exception of the silver fox, none are being farmed extensively enough to influence the fur market. Laws protecting fur bearers are helpful; at present, however, they are not preventing the animals from decreasing in number. There would be better fur and, in the long run, more of it if the open season were not more than two months long. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fur Trade of America For the past few years, there has been a campaign waged in the United States, which almost charges any one wearing a piece of fur with murder. When that question is asked me, I feel like answering by asking another set of questions Is child birth cruel? Is any type of birth for animals or humans painless Should we abolish all birth and strive for the Nirvana of Nothingness because all birth is at tended with even greater pain than death? Should we cease to fight for right and award honor to the heroes of war, because the triumph of right must necessarily entail death to those who fight for wrong? Book Fur Farming in the Province of Quebec

Download or read book Fur Farming in the Province of Quebec written by Edward Thomas Davies Chambers and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-27 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fur Farming in the Province of Quebec: Describing the Most Approved Methods of Propagating Foxes and Other Fur-Bearing Animals in Captivity In selecting the location of a farm or ranch for fox farming, it is desirable to avoid limited quarters in or near a city or town, or even in a. Small village where foxes might be disturbed by visitors, for in such cases they become restless and suspicious and do not breed well. Foxes require very little space and sometimes thrive in enclosures pet more than forty feet square. Some have been successfully raised in stables or other small buildings, but the fur only attains its richest, thickest and most valu able qualities when the animal is kept out-of-doo-rs, and when kind nature furnishes the necessary de gree of warmth in the superior quality of the fur. The enclosures may be but a few yards from a farm-house, or even if visitors are excluded, in a quiet place on the outskirts of a village. A total space of 5 acres is ample for extensiveoperations, and it is not likely that more than 2 acres will be needed for any except a large and long established business. A half acre will accommo date about 6 pairs of foxes, which is quite as many as. A beginner should attempt to handle. The selec tion of ground may depend upon circumstances, but effort should be made to include a few trees or small shrubs. These afford shade and a feeling of seclusion and security to the animals, but should not be high enough or near enough to the fence to enable the foxes to jump from them out of the en closure. Perfectly open ground 'has been used with fair success, and in other cases yards have been situated in thick woods. Neither extreme is to be desired, but many trees are better than none at all. Forthe sake of cleanliness, sandy sod should be selected wherever possible. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Sheep Farming in North America Classic Reprint

Download or read book Sheep Farming in North America Classic Reprint written by John Alexander Craig and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sheep-Farming in North America N o branch of animal husbandry has passed through so many serious changes in the last century as has the sheep-raising industry. Established, and for many years continued, with wool as the main oh ject, the successive changes have seemed to make the mutton side of sheep-raising more and more important. The more comprehensive books upon sheep em phasized wool-production and were largely devoted to diseases. The present volume considers the sheep as having an important place or part in intensive stock-farming. American farmers, as a rule, are not prepared to give sheep the attention they will repay, or that is necessary if the possibilities of employing them in the utilization of high-priced lands are to be realized. The range areas devoted to sheep are diminishing, and, as the industry comes to have a more stable position on general farms, the supplies and market prices may be expected to be more uniform than in the past. Book The Selection of Land for General Farming in the Gulf Coast Region East of the Mississippi River Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Selection of Land for General Farming in the Gulf Coast Region East of the Mississippi River Classic Reprint written by W. E. Tharp and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-17 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Selection of Land for General, Farming in the Gulf Coast Region, East of the Mississippi River The agricultural Opportunities in this section of the South are attracting many people from other localities, chiefly from the North ern States. In the last few years there has been marked activity on the part of real-estate and colonization companies, as well as of rail ways and some industrial organizations, in advertising the resources of this region and particularly in promoting the sale of the cut-over pine lands. The majority of the immigrants who purchase land for general farming have had little or no experience with such soils as commonly occur in this part of the Gulf Coast country. In too many instances the choice of location is largely determined by considerations other than the character of the soil or its adaptability to the kind of farm ing to be pursued. While accessibility to markets, the local facilities for transportation, and communication, as well as the general social conditions of a locality should be given due consideration, the soil itself is of first importance in the selection of land for a farm home. This paper discusses only the general soil characteristics, and but little more than mentions the chief problems in southern agriculture. It gives briefly such information as should be at the command of any one contemplating the purchase of farm land. Book Some Problems of the Fox Raising Industry Classic Reprint

Download or read book Some Problems of the Fox Raising Industry Classic Reprint written by Andrew Hunter and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Problems of the Fox-Raising Industry The pups are generally assumed, probably quite correctly, to acquire the infection during suckling, the teats of the mother fox having become contaminated with the eggs of the parasite through contact with such material as soil, feces, or the bedding of the nest. It is almost certain that the eggs of the round worm exist, and survive the winter, in the soil of every ranch where the parasite has been prevalent; and it is probably of some signifi cance that early litters, born while the snow is yet upon the ground, are, as experienced caretakers maintain, less liable to suffer from worms than the later ones. Unfortunately many of' the state ments made regarding round worms in the domesticated fox have rested hitherto upon analogy rather than upon actual observation. It is desirable that they should be tested upon the ground, and that the precise mode in which the fox becomes infected, together with the details of the parasite's life history in this particular host, should be established once and for all in an authoritative manner. Another aspect of the subject which deserves investigation is the possibility of attacking the parasite not after, but before' it has gained entrance into the new born pup. If it-were possible to destroy in the fall all the worms of eggs infesting the adult foxes, the dens, and the soil of the ranch, there could be no infection of pups in the following spring. This would be a more logical method of procedure than the one now prevailing; whether it is a practicable one can be determined only by experiment. The worms and their eggs, expelled as a result of treatment, are frequently allowed to lie unmolested in the pens wherever they happen to fall. In view of the highly resistant properties of the eggs this would appear to be a very careless procedure. It should be possible to devise some way by which they 'could be collected in one spot, and immediately destroyed. The observance of such an elementary precaution would probably do something to diminish the probability of reinfection. This book was released on 2018-09-21 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ferguson's Bred-Up Field Seeds for the Southwestern Farmer Some good things for this world are chance discoveries, but usually most discoveries are made by persons who are on the look-out. The original new boykin cotton Was a chance mutation, but its discovery and isolation was made possible by our system of breed ing blocks where seeds of selected stalks are planted in adjacent rows. The grand parent of ferguson' S new boykin belonged to a champion strain of Mebane Triumph from which many selected plants were saved. Its parent (strain 8-06) was likewise a champion strain from which numerous selections were planted in the breeding block of 1913. One of these selections, while resembling its brother-in-parentage, proved to be noticeably different and superior in several agricultural qualities. Its first discovery is shown above, as photographed November 22, 1913. The adjacent rows have the same number and spacing of stalks. The stalks are just two feet apart in the drill. Its superiority over Mebane Triumph is obvious. It has since been greatly improved by 14 years of breeding-up by Ferguson Seed Farms. Book The Modern Farm Hen Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Modern Farm Hen Classic Reprint written by Chesla C. Sherlock and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-30 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Modern Farm Hen A few farmers have recognized the fine profit to be made from the production of high-class market eggs and the sale of hatching eggs and baby chicks in the breeding season. They have laid out the farm poultry work so that it can be efficiently handled in connection with gen eral farming. And they are making good money. The thought has been with the author for some years that the methods used by these progressive men and women, if placed in a form accessible to other farmers, should do much towards elevating the general standard of the farm hen and would make farm poultry generally more profitable. The result has been the bringing together of this book which is written entirely for farmers and is based upon the experience and the methods of actual farmers. It deals only from the practical standpoint, keeping ever in mind the units and the conditions best adapted for average farm conditions. It attempts to reduce into a formula, as much as possible, every step along the road to poultry success. It should answer many of the questions which people are constantly raising as to the possibilities in poultry for the farmer. It will answer questions of methods, procedure and means. It exists for no other purpose. Grateful acknowledgment is made to Dante M. Pierce, who has made this work possible.
