Book excerpt: Excerpt from Funeral Discourse on the Death of Abraham Lincoln When the tidings of President Lincolns assassination threw a gloom over all hearts, Chicago, the metropolis of his State, where he was first nominated for the Presidency, felt especially afflicted. The whole city was draped. The edifice of the Second Baptist Church was very solemnly and appropriately decorated. Two days after the murder, Sabbath, April 16 th a day never to be forgotten the vast audience melted into tears while the Pastor read Davids lamentation over Saul and Jonathan, 2 Sam. i.17-27 The beauty of Israel is slain iipon thy high places; hoio are the migJdy fallen. On the Wednesday following, a service was held, in accordance with suggestions fi-om Washington, at which several addresses were made by members of the congregation and others. On Sabbath morning, April 23 rd, the Pastor preached a sermon for the occasion to a crowded congregation. A hymn was sung, written by Hon.E. Bixby, which is printed with the discourse. The singing was solemn and impressive, and the whole service was one of deep interest. In the evening, previous to the doxology, Hon. C.C. P.Holden rose and offered a resolution, which was cordially received by the large assembly, that an account of the exercises be preserved in printed form as a memento, and that the Pastor furnish the Trustees with a copy of the sermon preached by him on the death of President Lincoln. The discourse is here printed precisely as preached. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Commemorative Discourse on the Death of Abraham Lincoln To keep in memory, and to review with gratitude and honor, the lives of men conspicuous for great services, has the sanction of the universal judgment of mankind. In so doing, the goodness which would be ephemeral is embalmed; the examples worthy of perpetual imitation are kept as ever-burning lights in the darkness of the world. It is thus history adorns her temple with noble statues, and fills her archives with the choicest wisdom of the ages. It is thus that prophets and kings, benefactors and holy men, being dead, speak on from generation to generation, and the righteous are in everlasting remembrance. A prince and a great man has fallen, and a grateful people will establish his memorial: they will enrol his name with the illustrious benefactors of the world, and treasure his deeds amongst the worthiest traditions that are handed down to after-times. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Discourse on the Death of President Abraham Lincoln, Delivered in the Baptist Church in Smithfield, Fayette County, Pa., June 1st, 1865 NO Object of human vision is so brilliant as the sun. Its light is intense and its glory dazzling to the natural eye. But intervening clouds sometimes dim its lustre and enshroud its glory. So God, when he would clothe his providences with obscurity, robes himself With clouds and darkness. He flies upon the wings of the wind, and maketh his pavillion round about him, dark waters and thick clouds of the Skies. The mysterious clouds within whose veil di vine providences are evolved, though impenetrable to reason's eye, are pierced by the eye of Christian faith and their office discovered, Which is to soften the brilliancy of the Everlasting Throne. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Discourse Occasioned by the Death of Abraham Lincoln, President of the United States: Delivered at Rhinebeck, N. Y., April 19, 1865, at a Public Demonstration of the Citizens O, how appalling the intelligence borne to us on swift wing four days ago, that our beloved President was dead; and when the circumstances of his death were narrated dumbness for a time seized the masses. Spontaneously the store, the shop, the fields were vacated. The pressure upon the heart was so great as to check every impulse of business. Men gathered in public places as if seeking for sympathy. At times it was impossible to realize the dreadful fact. It Seemed rather that each had awakened out of a frightful dream. And the few davs that have since elapsed find us but little bet ter prepared to realize the event. It still seems but a troubled dream. Download or read book A Discourse on the Death of President Lincoln written by Denis Wortman and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Discourse on the Death of President Lincoln: Delivered in the First Reformed Dutch Church of Schenectady, N. Y Gentlemen: I cannot but be very grateful for your kind appreciation of the discourse, which, at your request, I now put into your hands. But far deeper than any sense of personal appreciation is that grateful emotion, which every patriot feels at each new demonstration that, however people may have differed before, now, in this time of the nation's bereavement, without distinction of party or of sect, they come together in sentiment, speech, and action, to the support of the government and the assertion of its authority. In regard to the present discourse, delivered only thirty-six hours after the death of the President, it was, of course, prepared in greatest haste and under intensest excitement, an unutterable grief and equal indignation alternating and commingling. Never were the people shocked with so great a horror; they shook their heads in doubtful augury of the future; waiting anxiously for each new telegram from Washington, they yet almost feared to receive it, lest it should tell them of further assassinations. This will not, of course, be understood as an apology for any utterances contained in the discourse, for on calm review I see nothing to be changed so far as the sentiments are concerned. But, to those of you who, differing widely from some of its views, -have yet expressed yourselves so kindly concerning it and joined in the request for its publication, I wish to return my sincere thanks, that you appreciated the circumstances under which it was delivered, and cared not for smaller differences in your overwhelming distress at the nation's loss. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Discourse on the Death of Abraham Lincoln: Preached at the Presbyterian Church, Palmyra, N. Y., April 19th, 1865 The jot of our heart is ceased - our dance is turned into mourning. The crown is fallen from our head. Woe unto us that we have Sinned! For this our heart is faint - for these things our eyes are dim. - Lamentations 5: 15-17. The Bible is a wonderful book. It is God's book and man's book. God made it and man made it. Just as Christ is verily God and verily man, so every word is verily divine and verily human. It came not to us ready written with an angel's plume, but with reeds from the Jordan, inspired of God, committed to the parchment by man, and thus we have not only the thoughts and mind of God, and those grand and wonderful ideas that span eternity, but the emotions, experiences, perplexities, anxieties, doubts, and oppressive sorrows of men, beautifully blended in majestic appeal, stern denunciation, overflowing tenderness, or melodious woe. It appears to me that these words were inspired and given to us for this very occasion - so appropriately do they describe our condition and express what seems to me to be the emotions of every heart. "One would think," says Dr. South, "that every letter was written with a tear - every word the sound of a breaking heart; that the author was compacted of sorrows, disciplined to grief - one who never breathed but in sighs, nor spoke but in a groan.
