Book Introduction to Modern Optics

Download or read book Introduction to Modern Optics written by Grant R. Fowles and published by Courier Corporation. This book was released on 1989-01-01 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This incisive text provides a basic undergraduate-level course in modern optics for students in physics, technology and engineering. The first half of the book deals with classical physical optics; the second principally with the quantum nature of light. Chapters 1 and 2 treat the propagation of light waves, including the concepts of phase and group velocities, and the vectorial nature of light. Chapter 3 applies the concepts of partial coherence and coherence length to the study of interference, and Chapter 4 takes up multiple-beam interference and includes Fabry-Perot interferometry and multilayer-film theory. Diffraction and holography are the subjects of Chapter 5, and the propagation of light in material media (including crystal and nonlinear optics) are central to Chapter 6. Chapters 7 and 8 introduce the quantum theory of light and elementary optical spectra, and Chapter 9 explores the theory of light amplification and lasers. Chapter 10 briefly outlines ray optics in order to introduce students to the matrix method for treating optical systems and to apply the ray matrix to the study of laser resonators. Many applications of the laser to the study of optics are integrated throughout the text. The author assumes students have had an intermediate course in electricity and magnetism and some advanced mathematics beyond calculus. For classroom use, a list of problems is included at the end of each chapter, with selected answers at the end of the book.

Book Engineering Physics

  • Author : Purnima Khare
  • Publisher : Jones & Bartlett Learning
  • Release : 2010
  • ISBN : 9780763773748
  • Pages : 586 pages

Download or read book Engineering Physics written by Purnima Khare and published by Jones & Bartlett Learning. This book was released on 2010 with total page 586 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text/reference provides students, practicing engineers, and scientists with the fundamental physical laws and modern applications used in industry. Unlike many of its competitors, modern physics theory (e.g., quantum physics) and its applications are discussed in detail, including laser techniques and fiber optics, nuclear fusion, digital electronics, wave optics, and more. An extensive review of Boolean algebra and logic gates is also included. Because of its in-text examples with solutions and self-study exercise sets, the book can be used as a refresher for engineering licensing exams or as a full year course. It emphasizes only the level of mathematics needed to master concepts used in industry.

Book Modern Optics

  • Author : B. D. Guenther
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2018
  • ISBN : 0198824327
  • Pages : 737 pages

Download or read book Modern Optics written by B. D. Guenther and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018 with total page 737 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern Optics is a fundamental study of the principles of optics using a rigorous physical approach based on Maxwell's Equations. The treatment provides the mathematical foundations needed to understand a number of applications such as laser optics, fiber optics and medical imaging covered inan engineering curriculum as well as the traditional topics covered in a physics based course in optics. In addition to treating the fundamentals in optical science, the student is given an exposure to actual optics engineering problems such as paraxial matrix optics, aberrations with experimentalexamples, Fourier transform optics (Fresnel-Kirchhoff formulation), Gaussian waves, thin films, photonic crystals, surface plasmons, and fiber optics. Through its many pictures, figures, and diagrams, the text provides a good physical insight into the topics covered. The course content can bemodified to reflect the interests of the instructor as well as the student, through the selection of optional material provided in appendixes.
