Book Fundamentals of Ethics An Introduction to Moral Philosophy

Download or read book Fundamentals of Ethics An Introduction to Moral Philosophy written by Marshall Urban Wilbur and published by Fisher Press. This book was released on 2007-03 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: PREFACE. THE Author of this very practical treatise on Scotch Loch - Fishing desires clearly that it may be of use to all who had it. He does not pretend to have written anything new, but to have attempted to put what he has to say in as readable a form as possible. Everything in the way of the history and habits of fish has been studiously avoided, and technicalities have been used as sparingly as possible. The writing of this book has afforded him pleasure in his leisure moments, and that pleasure would be much increased if he knew that the perusal of it would create any bond of sympathy between himself and the angling community in general. This section is interleaved with blank shects for the readers notes. The Author need hardly say that any suggestions addressed to the case of the publishers, will meet with consideration in a future edition. We do not pretend to write or enlarge upon a new subject. Much has been said and written-and well said and written too on the art of fishing but loch-fishing has been rather looked upon as a second-rate performance, and to dispel this idea is one of the objects for which this present treatise has been written. Far be it from us to say anything against fishing, lawfully practised in any form but many pent up in our large towns will bear us out when me say that, on the whole, a days loch-fishing is the most convenient. One great matter is, that the loch-fisher is depend- ent on nothing but enough wind to curl the water, -and on a large loch it is very seldom that a dead calm prevails all day, -and can make his arrangements for a day, weeks beforehand whereas the stream- fisher is dependent for a good take on the state of the water and however pleasant and easy it may be for one living near the banks of a good trout stream or river, it is quite another matter to arrange for a days river-fishing, if one is looking forward to a holiday at a date some weeks ahead. Providence may favour the expectant angler with a good day, and the water in order but experience has taught most of us that the good days are in the minority, and that, as is the case with our rapid running streams, -such as many of our northern streams are, -the water is either too large or too small, unless, as previously remarked, you live near at hand, and can catch it at its best. A common belief in regard to loch-fishing is, that the tyro and the experienced angler have nearly the same chance in fishing, -the one from the stern and the other from the bow of the same boat. Of all the absurd beliefs as to loch-fishing, this is one of the most absurd. Try it. Give the tyro either end of the boat he likes give him a cast of ally flies he may fancy, or even a cast similar to those which a crack may be using and if he catches one for every three the other has, he may consider himself very lucky. Of course there are lochs where the fish are not abundant, and a beginner may come across as many as an older fisher but we speak of lochs where there are fish to be caught, and where each has a fair chance. Again, it is said that the boatman has as much to do with catching trout in a loch as the angler. Well, we dont deny that. In an untried loch it is necessary to have the guidance of a good boatman but the same argument holds good as to stream-fishing...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book is divided into three parts-one on the Good Life, another on Doing the Right Thing, and the last on the Status of Morality. You can read these parts in any order. Many will want to begin at the end, for instance, with a discussion of whether morality is a human invention, or is in some way objective. Some will prefer to start in the middle, asking about the supreme principle of morality (and whether there is any such thing). And others may want to begin at the beginning, by thinking about human well-being and the quality of life. Each part can be understood independently of the others, though there are of course many points of connection across the three main branches of moral philosophy. No matter where you begin, there are footnotes in most chapters that provide cross-references to relevant discussions elsewhere in the book. When beginning a new area of study, you're bound to encounter some unfamiliar jargon. I've tried to keep this to a minimum, and I suppose that you can be thankful that we're doing ethics here, rather than physics or anatomy. I define each technical term when I first use it, and have also put together a glossary, which appears at the end of the book. Each specialized term that appears in boldface has an entry there. You may be interested enough in what you read here that you'll want to continue your studies in moral philosophy. There is a natural place to begin-the companion volume to this book, The Ethical Life, described later in this preface. I have also compiled a list of Suggestions for Further Reading for each chapter or pair of chapters. This list appears at the end of the book, just before the glossary. I have selected the readings with an eye to what might be accessible and interesting to those just beginning their study of moral philosophy"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are we entitled to be confident that our moral judgements can be objective? Can they express insights into aspects of reality, rather than mere feelings, tastes, desires, decisions, upbringing, or conventions? Why must we consider some of our choices to be free, and how do our free choices matter? How far should our moral judgements be based on assessments of expected consequences? Can utilitarianism, and other consequentialist or proportionalist theories, be anything more than the rationalization of positions taken on other grounds? The main theme of this book is the challenge to ethics from philosophical scepticism and from contemporary forms of consequentialism. But in seeking to meet this challenge, the book develops a sustained philosophical argument about many of the central questions of ethics. It reviews classical positions, and challenges some long-influential interpretations of those positions. It also reviews and participates in some recent developments and controversies in Anglo-American ethical theory. The activity of ethical theorizing itself is shown to be a matter of free and intelligent decision, in pursuit of intelligible good; it thus provides a test-case for any ethical theory.

Shelly Kagan offers a division between moral factors and theoretical foundations that reflects the actual working practices of contemporary moral philosophers. The first half of the book presents a systematic survey of the basic normative factors, focusing on controversial questions concerning the precise content of each factor, its scope and significance, and its relationship to other factors. The second half of the book then examines the competing theories about the foundations of normative ethics, theories that attempt to explain why the basic normative factors have the moral significance that they do.Intended for upper-level or graduate students of philosophy, this book should also appeal to the general reader looking for a clearly written overview of the basic principles of moral philosophy.

Book A Concise Introduction to Ethics

  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2019-07-15
  • ISBN : 9780190058234
  • Pages : 128 pages

Download or read book A Concise Introduction to Ethics written by Professor of Philosophy Russ Shafer-Landau and published by . This book was released on 2019-07-15 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Concise Introduction to Ethics is an abbreviated and simplified version of Russ Shafer-Landau's best-selling textbook/primer on ethical theory for the introduction to ethics and introduction to contemporary moral issues courses, The Fundamentals of Ethics. For many philosophy departments these ethics courses are their largest enrollment offerings, often fulfilling a university general education requirement. Shafer-Landau's The Fundamentals of Ethics has been the #1 selling ethics textbook for years primarily because it provides students with the clearest and most accessible explanations of ethical theories available. It is relatively brief, and yet quite comprehensive, covering more theories than the competing texts do but also presenting them in the most understandable way--the author has a direct conversation with the students. This book will be about 1/3 shorter than The Fundamentals of Ethics, while still maintaining its content advantage over competing books by including several areas of theory that others omit, including the good life (value theory), natural law, and prima facie duties. A Concise Introduction to Ethics will be based on the first part of Shafer-Landau's new OUP hybrid textbook/reader Living Ethics. The end of each chapter features several cases and discussion questions so students get opportunities to apply ethical theories to real-world moral issues and problems. Like its parent book, this volume can be paired with Shafer-Landau's reader The Ethical Life, which includes key reading selections from ethical theory and essays on contemporary moral problems. It can also accompany any reader on ethics or contemporary moral issues.

Book The Philosophical and Theological Foundations of Ethics

Download or read book The Philosophical and Theological Foundations of Ethics written by Peter Byrne and published by Palgrave Macmillan. This book was released on 1999 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the central issues of moral philosophy with a view to giving an account of the relation between religious belief and ethics. It examines the definition of morality and defends the idea that there is something called moral knowledge which all human beings possess. It grounds moral knowledge in conscience as rooted in our experience of making choices and of the moral structure of human relationships. It examines the moral structure of human action. Central chapters are devoted to the three major forms of moral theory current in contemporary philosophy. Each theory is related to a morally relevant facet of action. A virtues-based theory of the good and the right is defended as giving the best overall account of the structure of moral knowledge. Two chapters apply this theory to the intellectual problems of secular and religious ethics respectively. This second edition includes a new chapter on feminist moral theory, together with a new preface and bibliography.

Book The Dimensions of Ethics

Download or read book The Dimensions of Ethics written by Wilfrid J. Waluchow and published by Broadview Press. This book was released on 2003-03-27 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Dimensions of Ethics offers a concise but wide-ranging introduction to moral philosophy. In clear and engaging fashion, the author first examines the scope of ethical theory, and explores central metaethical questions such as the issue of relativism, and the relationship between morality and religion. He then turns to an exploration of five theoretical approaches (utilitarianism, the deontological approach of Kant, the ethical pluralism of Ross, virtue ethics, and feminist ethics), in each case providing a consideration of various objections that have been advanced as well as a sympathetic exposition of the core principles of each approach. Throughout he uses a wide range of examples, and integrates references to issues in applied ethics with his discussions of ethical theory.
