Book excerpt: The Quantum Measurement Problem (QMP) is a single resource for information on the QMP and it establishes a basis for research on what is arguably the most well-known and still-unresolved scientific problem: how does our observed world relate to the quantum? The book is suitable for both undergraduate level study on a selective basis as well as graduate level study and for use as a resource for research scientists interested in aspects of the QMP. There are many sections that can even be profitably read by the general public to appreciate the history and future importance of the QMP. Although many books are now available that adequately address Quantum Information, this is the first book offering a comparable treatment for the QMP. The QMP has a companion website, https: //theqmp.com, with video presentations and other resources. There are some in the physics community that view the QMP only as a problem that requires an interpretation while others view its solution as essential to complete our physical description of the world and enhance our ability to design experimental probes of its physical elements in terms of quantum physics. This book critically examines these two viewpoints and resolves this dichotomy in favor of the latter viewpoint. The problem is precisely defined in terms of experimental operations and the scientific requirements that a resolution would have to meet. It explains why the QMP is a physical problem that requires more than an interpretation for its resolution and why a solution could have profound implications for physics as well as other fields. In particular, it uses quantum information methods for a constructive demonstration that unitary Schrödinger processes can be experimentally distinguished from measurement processes using well-established techniques such as Bell measurements, which would establish that measurement is a non-unitary process. Neither Schrödinger's equation nor the measurement postulate is found to be sufficient to explain measurement. For the first time, The QMP offers a single resource that thoroughly assesses the strengths and weaknesses of the major approaches to the QMP. . The exposition in The QMP contains eight chapters, including problem sets, with dual tracks throughout the book that allow both those with a technical background in quantum physics or quantum information as well as less-technical readers to come up to speed on the QMP, depending on their interests and background. . Chapters 1 and 2 are an introductory-level presentation of wave-particle duality and unitary Schrödinger processes. Chapter 3 is a key chapter that uses quantum information methods for a constructive demonstration that unitary Schrödinger processes can be experimentally distinguished from measurement processes using well-established techniques such as Bell measurements, which would establish that measurement is a non-unitary process. Chapter 4 presents a detailed definition of the QMP in terms of experimental observations and uses the results of Chapter 3 to systematically evaluate the strength and weaknesses of all the major approaches to the QMP in the literature and determine which constitute physical theories as opposed to philosophical interpretations. Chapter 5 gives an uncensored historical perspective leading to the development of quantum physics from the viewpoint of those physical aspects which will ultimately form the elements of the QMP. Chapter 6 presents a unique discussion of the Scientific Method and how the use of scientific deduction within the approach of radical conservatism can most proficiently address problems of quantum foundations. Chapter 7 presents concepts and mathematical tools useful for further research developments of both closed and open system approaches to the QMP. Chapter 8 presents conclusions and the status of the QMP for moving forward.

Book excerpt: Due to its extraordinary predictive power and the great generality of its mathematical structure, quantum theory is able, at least in principle, to describe all the microscopic and macroscopic properties of the physical world, from the subatomic to the cosmological level. Nevertheless, ever since the Copen hagen and Gottingen schools in 1927 gave it the definitive formu lation, now commonly known as the orthodox interpretation, the theory has suffered from very serious logical and epistemologi cal problems. These shortcomings were immediately pointed out by some of the principal founders themselves of quantum theory, to wit, Planck, Einstein, Ehrenfest, Schrodinger, and de Broglie, and by the philosopher Karl Popper, who assumed a position of radical criticism with regard to the standard formulation of the theory. This basic framework for the mathematical formulation of quantum information can be traced back to the mathematical work of John von Neumann, one of the pioneers of operator algebras, which forms the underpinning of most current mathematical treatments of the quantum theory, besides being one of the most dynamic areas of twentieth century functional analysis. Today, von Neumann’s foresight finds expression in the rapidly growing field of quantum information theory. These notes gather the content of lectures given by a very distinguished group of mathematicians and quantum information theorists, held at the IMSc in Chennai some years ago, and great care has been taken to present the material as a primer on the subject matter. Starting from the basic definitions of operator spaces and operator systems, this text proceeds to discuss several important theorems including Stinespring’s dilation theorem for completely positive maps and Kirchberg’s theorem on tensor products of C*-algebras. It also takes a closer look at the abstract characterization of operator systems and, motivated by the requirements of different tensor products in quantum information theory, the theory of tensor products in operator systems is discussed in detail. On the quantum information side, the book offers a rigorous treatment of quantifying entanglement in bipartite quantum systems, and moves on to review four different areas in which ideas from the theory of operator systems and operator algebras play a natural role: the issue of zero-error communication over quantum channels, the strong subadditivity property of quantum entropy, the different norms on quantum states and the corresponding induced norms on quantum channels, and, lastly, the applications of matrix-valued random variables in the quantum information setting.

Book excerpt: It may tum out that, like certain other phenomena studied by sociologists, bouts of interest in the foundations of quantum mechanics tend to come in 60-year cycles. It is hardly surprising that in the first decade or so of the subject the conceptual puzzles generated by this strange new way of looking at the world should have generated profound interest, not just among professional physicists themselves but also among philosophers and informed laymen; but this intense interest was followed by a fallow period in the forties and fifties when the physics establishment by and large took the view that the only puzzles left were the product either of incompetent application of the formalism or of bad philosophy, and only a few brave individualists like the late David Bohm dared to suggest that maybe there really was something there after all to worry about. As Bell and Nauenberg, surveying the scene in 1966, put it: "The typical physicist feels that [these questions 1 have long ago been answered, and that he will fully understand how if ever he can spare twenty minutes to think about it. " But gradually, through the sixties and seventies, curiosity did revive, and the last ten years or so have seen a level of interest in foundational questions, and an involvement in them by some of the leading figures of contemporary physics, which is probably unparalleled since the earliest days.

Book excerpt: The present volume has its origins in a pair of informal workshops held at the Free University of Brussels, in June of 1998 and May of 1999, named "Current Research 1 in Operational Quantum Logic". These brought together mathematicians and physicists working in operational quantum logic and related areas, as well as a number of interested philosophers of science, for a rare opportunity to discuss recent developments in this field. After some discussion, it was decided that, rather than producing a volume of conference proceedings, we would try to organize the conferees to produce a set of comprehensive survey papers, which would not only report on recent developments in quantum logic, but also provide a tutorial overview of the subject suitable for an interested non-specialist audience. The resulting volume provides an overview of the concepts and methods used in current research in quantum logic, viewed both as a branch of mathemati cal physics and as an area of pure mathematics. The first half of the book is concerned with the algebraic side of the subject, and in particular the theory of orthomodular lattices and posets, effect algebras, etc. In the second half of the book, special attention is given to categorical methods and to connections with theoretical computer science. At the 1999 workshop, we were fortunate to hear three excellent lectures by David J. Foulis, represented here by two contributions. Dave's work, spanning 40 years, has helped to define, and continues to reshape, the field of quantum logic.
