Book The Chemical Investigation of Gastric and Intestinal Diseases

Download or read book The Chemical Investigation of Gastric and Intestinal Diseases written by Vaughan Harley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-06 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chemical Investigation of Gastric and Intestinal Diseases: By the Aid of Test Meals It is practically impossible to diagnose many of the functional diseases of the stomach from the symptoms alone, and the clini cian who does not call chemical tests to his aid is bound to mass together under one or another heading, various functional dis orders which ought to be kept entirely separate. Thanks to the introduction of the stomach-tube, one is now able to obtain the contents of the stomach, and find out what Chemical changes, if any, are present, thus enabling one to draw conclusions as to the sub-division of the various functional diseases of the stomach. In organic diseases of the stomach, chemical analysis is not nearly so important, since in these there are several signs and symptoms which point in one. Direction or the other. It must be understood that the results obtained from the chemi cal analysis of the gastric contents can never alone be sufficient for the formation of a definite diagnosis of the various forms Of gastric dyspepsia; each case has to be carefully considered in connection with the various symptoms and physical Signs present, and the stomach analysis is merely to be regarded as an aid in making a more careful and detailed diagnosis. The idea that any one chemical factor is pathognomonic of any Special condition must also be at once put aside; The diagnosis of carcinoma of the stomach from the absence of free hydrochloric acid in the gastric secretions has now to be regarded as non-conclusive, unless the history and physical Signs support the diagnosis. This is analogous to the fact that the presence of albumen in the urine is not pathognomonic of Bright's disease unless one has negatived its attribution to cardiac, digestive, or other causes, and has, in support of the Bright's disease theory, various other symptoms with possibly other chemical results, which point in that direction. The fact that albumen is not pathognomonic of Bright's disease does not, however, detract from the value of the urine analysis. Book excerpt: As aging trends in the United States and Europe in particular are strongly suggestive of increasingly older society, it would be prudent for health care providers to better prepare for such changes. By including physiology, disease, nutrition, pharmacology, pathology, radiology and other relevant associated topics, Geriatric Gastroenterology fills the void in the literature for a volume devoted specifically to gastrointestinal illness in the elderly. This unique volume includes provision of training for current and future generations of physicians to deal with the health problems of older adults. All have become important components of modern medicine. Special emphasis is be given to nutrition and related disorders. Book Handbook of Psychology and Health Volume IV

Download or read book Handbook of Psychology and Health Volume IV written by Shelley E. Taylor and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-09-10 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1984, the study of psychological aspects of health was a rapidly expanding enterprise. Most of the contributors to this volume were trained as social psychologists or by social psychologists. Some have been more applied in their focus or on the edge of several fields. All, however, share a common approach, focusing on the individual as he or she is buffeted about by social forces and copes with these forces. All consider situational and psychological factors in the determination of behavior, emotion, or cognition and all apply their expertise to the study of health-related issues. The grouping of the chapters in this volume by the authors’ subspecialty, social psychology, is a somewhat unconventional method of clustering. Ordinarily, the materials presented here would be published in journals or texts concerned with behavior or psychosocial in health and medicine, or in specialty publications dealing with a particular disease or health issue. That clustering of articles is functional in providing information to those most likely to utilize it, but it diffuses the origin and background of the studies. These chapters speak to the diversity of health issues that are amenable to successful social psychological analysis.

Book excerpt: The research and outcomes presented in this book gather evidence concerning both the pathogenesis and treatment of functional dyspepsia. It provides the latest information on this common non-organic disease, indicating its characteristic pathogenesis based on the brain-gut interaction and micro-environment and evidence gleaned from clinical treatment. Since the pathogenesis is associated with psychology, neurology, endocrinology and bacteriology in addition to gastroenterological physiology, it is often intractable and finding a suitable treatment rationale is challenging. Furthermore, the pathogenesis varies around the world and the efficacy of treatment using standard drugs varies among different populations worldwide; accordingly, this book highlights evidence gained in clinical trials in Japan. Functional Dyspepsia is a milestone produced by respected experts. Addressing unique topics and new findings of treatment including challenging and/or future rationales, it offers an invaluable resource for general clinicians, gastroenterologists, and basic researchers alike.
