Download or read book Sulphuric Utopias written by Lukas Engelmann and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2020-03-31 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How early twentieth century fumigation technologies transformed maritime quarantine practices and inspired utopian visions of disease-free global trade. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, fumigation technologies transformed global practices of maritime quarantine through chemical and engineering innovation. One of these technologies, the widely used Clayton machine, blasted sulphuric acid gas through a docked ship in an effort to eliminate pathogens, insects, and rats while leaving the cargo and the structure of the vessel unharmed, shortening its time in quarantine and minimizing the risk of importing infectious diseases. In Sulphuric Utopias, Lukas Engelmann and Christos Lynteris examine this overlooked but historically crucial practice at the intersection of epidemiology, hygiene, applied chemistry, and engineering. They show how maritime fumigation inspired utopian visions of disease-free trade to improve global shipping and to encourage universally applicable standards of sanitation and hygiene. Engelmann and Lynteris chart the history of ideas about fumigation, disinfection, and quarantine, and chronicle the development of the Clayton machine in 1880s New Orleans. Built by the Louisiana Board of Health and adapted and patented by Thomas Clayton, the machine offered a barrier against bacteria and pests and enabled a highway to global trade. Engelmann and Lynteris chronicle the Clayton machine's success and examine its competitors, including carbon-based fumigation methods in Germany and the Ottoman Empire as well as the “Sulfurozador” in Argentina. They follow the international standardization of maritime fumigation and explore the Clayton machine's decline after World War I, when visions of “sulphuric utopia” were replaced by a pragmatic acknowledgment of epidemiological complexity.
Download or read book Non Soil Fumigation A Pesticide Applicator Study Guide written by and published by UCANR Publications. This book was released on 2023-08-10 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study manual will prepare individuals for the Department of Pesticide Regulation's (DPR's) commercial applicator Non-Soil Fumigation category (Category M) examination. Fumigants are a type of pesticide with unique physical and chemical characteristics. Fumigants are gases, or turn into gases, after application. Fumigants may be odorless and usually cannot be seen. DPR's Non-Soil Fumigation category is intended for individuals who perform pest control using a pesticide labeled as a fumigant. This category does not include structural pest control required to be licensed under Chapter 14 (commencing with Section 8500) of Division 3 of the Business and Professions Code. This study manual covers important aspects of pesticides used for non-soil fumigations. However, the study manual is not a substitute for reading and understanding the label of the specific fumigant product you will be using. Thoroughly read the label prior to purchase and application. Each chapter ends with review questions. After reading each chapter, test your understanding of the information presented in the chapter by answering the review questions. The review questions are similar to those that will be on the exam.

Download or read book Methods in Soil Biology written by Franz Schinner and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In terrestrial ecosystems, soil microorganisms and soil animals are essential for litter degradation, soil formation and the availability of nutrients and trace elements. The measurement of biological soil parameters allows a rapid evaluation of the effects of chemical and physical influences due to pollutants or soil management. This book introduces a number of well proved methods for the analysis of carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus and sulfur cycles. It focuses further on the determination of the number and biomass of microorganisms, algae and animals in the soil. Particular emphasis is placed on the comprehensible and complete description of the experimental procedures.
Download or read book Standard Soil Methods for Long Term Ecological Research written by G. Philip Robertson and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1999-10-28 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Standardized methods and measurements are crucial for ecological research, particularly in long-term ecological studies where the projects are by nature collaborative and where it can be difficult to distinguish signs of environmental change from the effects of differing methodologies. This second volume in the Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) Network Series addresses these issues directly by providing a comprehensive standardized set of protocols for measuring soil properties. The goal of the volume is to facilitate cross-site synthesis and evaluation of ecosystem processes. Chapters cover methods for studying physical and chemical properties of soils, soil biological properties, and soil organisms, and they include work from many leaders in the field. The book is the first broadly based compendium of standardized soil measurement methods and will be an invaluable resource for ecologists, agronomists, and soil scientists.

Download or read book Soil Fumigation Second Edition written by Shannah M. Whithaus and published by UCANR Publications. This book was released on 2023-08-31 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fumigant is a type of pesticide that volatilizes after being applied as a solid, liquid, or liquefied gas. Soil fumigants applied into fallow ground before planting are an important part of integrated pest management programs in row crops and orchards, nursery operations, and turfgrass maintenance programs throughout California. Fumigants may be odorless and usually cannot be seen. It is important to remember that fumigants are among the most hazardous chemicals you will handle or encounter at your workplace. This book is for people who will study for an examination and apply for a Soil Fumigation Qualified Applicator License or Certificate (QAL or QAC) in California. To obtain a QAL or QAC in this category, you must pass examinations in the following areas:
- basic principles of effective pesticide use
- soil fumigation pest control
- laws and regulations
In this book, most of the laws and regulations covered are specific to soil fumigations performed in California. California’s pesticide laws provide general guidelines, and its regulations provide the specifics for how to comply.
In addition to demonstrating knowledge of the laws and regulations related to fumigant use, applicators are expected to prove that they understand:
- the proper handling and application of soil fumigants
- the human health and environmental risks of soil fumigants
- the methods used to avoid or mitigate the risks associated with soil fumigants
First Edition published as Field Fumigation ANR Publication 9005.

Download or read book Georgia Pest Management Handbook written by Emily Cabrera and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2021-03-30 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Georgia Pest Management Handbook provides current information on selection, application, and safe use of pest control chemicals. This handbook has recommendations for pest control around homes and on pets; for pests of home garden vegetables, fruits, and ornamentals; and for pests of public health interest associated with our homes. Cultural, biological, physical, and other types of control are recommended where appropriate. Pesticide recommendations are based on information on the manufacturer labels and on performance data from research and extension trials at the University of Georgia and its sister institutions. Because environmental conditions, the severity of pest pressure, and methods of application vary widely, recommendations do not imply that performance of pesticides will always be acceptable. This publication is intended to be used only as a guide. Trade and brand names are used only for information. The University of Georgia does not guarantee nor warrant published standards on any product mentioned; nor does the use of a trade or brand name imply approval of any product to the exclusion of others that may also be suitable. Always follow the use instructions and precautions on the pesticide label. For questions, concerns, or improvement suggestions regarding the Georgia Pest Management Handbook, please contact your county agent.
