Download or read book Strengthening the Role of Part Time Faculty in Community Colleges Focus Group Toolkit written by Center for Community College Student Engagement and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Center for Community College Student Engagement encourages colleges to hold focus groups with part-time and full-time faculty to learn about differences in the faculty and their experience at their college and to complement survey data. Survey responses tell the "what" about faculty's experiences; through conducting focus groups, colleges will learn the "why." In addition to gathering specific details about faculty perceptions and experiences, these structured discussions will also help uncover possible strategies to consider for strengthening the role of part-time faculty at the college. Provided in this toolkit are materials for organizing focus groups and sample focus group discussion guides for faculty. In addition, sample quantitative response sheets are provided to gather basic demographic information, as well as information to complement findings from discussions. [This toolkit was produced as part of the Center initiative Strengthening the Role of Part-Time Faculty in Community Colleges, supported by MetLife Foundation.].

This issue focuses on: the types of research and scholarship performed by community college faculty, the forces that foster or impede the engagement of community college faculty members in research and scholarship, specific examples of community college faculty scholarship that demonstrate the value of this work to the institution and to larger society, and policies and practices at the institutional, local, and state level that support engagement in research and scholarship. Book Hiring the Next Generation of Faculty New Directions for Community Colleges Number 152

Download or read book Hiring the Next Generation of Faculty New Directions for Community Colleges Number 152 written by Cejda and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-01-18 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first chapter in this volume presents an overview of the faculty personnel challenges facing community colleges; the next three discuss the socialization and professional development of new faculty. Authors stress the importance of understanding differences among the typs of community colleges and the importance of gender and racial/thnic diversity among the facultry of the institutions who educate the majority of undergraduate females and students of color. The volume concludes with chapters on legal aspects related to the faculty employment and the experiences of presidents and senior instructional administrators, giving valuable guidance to those actively involved in the hiring process. At the heart of this volume is the continued commitment to the community college ideal of providing educational access and, through quality instruction, facilitating student learning and success. Previous research indicated that community college faculty retire at or near the traditional age of sixty-five. With an aging faculty, enrollments that are reaching unprecedented levels, and the federal goverment calling for the community college to take an even greater role in workforce training, community colleges will need to both replace significant portions of their faculty and hire additional faculty lines between now and 2020. This next hiring wave has implications for community colleges, the diverse student populations who attend these institutions, and society in general. This is the 152nd volume of the Jossey-Bass quarterly report series New Directions for Community Colleges. Essential to the professional libraries of presidents, vice presidents, deans, and other leaders in today's open-door institutions, New Directions for Community Colleges provides expert guidance in meeting the challenges of their distinctive and expanding educational mission.

Book An Analysis of Community College Developmental Education Faculty Members Perceptions of Professional Development

Download or read book An Analysis of Community College Developmental Education Faculty Members Perceptions of Professional Development written by Mary Helen Pavia Martinez and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Faculty professional development is an essential component in the fabric of community colleges. Nationwide research studies indicate that students who begin their post-secondary studies underprepared and enrolled in developmental education are less likely to complete a college degree. Developmental education has been under reform for the past few years with the goal of accelerating students' success and transitioning them into college-level courses. Given the present state of reform, more research is needed on faculty preparation in teaching developmental education, specifically on the role of professional development in preparing faculty in developmental education. Faculty in developmental education are central to the success of students completing a degree or certificate. During this current state of reform in developmental education, professional development represents a probable solution to preparing faculty to provide condensed versions of developmental education course models. This research study examined perceptions of community college faculty in developmental education on professional development. This study utilized a qualitative case study design with the use of focus groups, semi-structured interviews, and surveys. The findings were (a) the majority of participants reported that sharing with other faculty members was beneficial and perceived the sharing of practice with like-minded individuals as a professional development activity, (b) participants' primary challenges to participating in professional development were limited funding and time away from classroom, and (c) participants expressed apprehension regarding the state of reform in developmental education. Insights from faculty on needs, challenges, and perceptions may enhance the effectiveness, timeliness, and quality of faculty development programs.
