Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Full Abstraction and Semantic Equivalence" demonstrates an original theory that uses the same inclusive predicates to show semantic equivalence and to construct fully abstract, extensional submodels.Previous general techniques for proving semantic equivalence, through the construction of inclusive predicates, have foundered due to their complexity and the lack of any counter-examples. In this book, Mulmuley has been able to construct a counterexample through diagonalization; moreover, he has discovered a technique to prove semantic equivalences that has the advantage of being mechanizable. This system, called Inclusive Predicate Logic (IPL), can almost automatically prove the existence of most of the inclusive predicates which arise in practice.Mulmuley also demonstrates that one can construct a fully abstract algebraic model of typed lambda calculus which is a submodel of the classical model, if the classical model is based on complete lattices. Beyond this, the book shows that theory can extend to the case of a language that has reflexive (recursively defined) types-as do most of the "real" programming languages.Contents: Introduction to Domain Theory. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a minor revision of the thesis submitted in August 1996; no major changes have been made. However, I would like to take this opportunity to mention that since the thesis was written, discoveries have been made which would allow a substantial simplification and strengthening of the results in Chapters 3 and 6. In particular, it is now possible to model sums correctly in the category I as well as in £, which means that the definability results of Chapter 6 can be stated and proved at the intensional level, making them simpler and much closer in spirit to the original proofs of Abramsky, Jagadeesan, Malacaria, Hyland, Ong and Nickau [10,61,79]. This also leads quite straightforwardly to an understanding of call-by-value languages. Details of these improvements can be found in [14,73]. It is also worth mentioning that progress has been made on some of the topics suggested for future research in Chapter 7. In particular, fully abstract models have been found for various kinds of languages with local variables [8,13-16], and a fully complete games model of the polymorphic language System F has been constructed by Hughes [59]. Guy McCusker February 1998 Acknowledgements First of all, I must thank my supervisor, Samson Abramsky. It was he who first introduced me to game semantics and suggested avenues of research in the area; this book would certainly not exist were it not for him.

This book was released on 1992-09-22 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of reprints describes a unified treatment of semantics, covering a wide range of notions in parallel languages. Included are several foundational and introductory papers developing the methodology of metric semantics, studies on the comparative semantics of parallel object-oriented and logic programming, and papers on full abstraction and transition system specifications. In addition, links with process algebra and the theory of domain equations are established. Throughout, a uniform proof technique is used to relate operational and denotational models. The approach is flexible in that both linear time, branching time (or bisimulation) and intermediate models can be handled, as well as schematic and interpreted elementary actions. The reprints are preceded by an extensive introduction surveying related work on metric semantics.
Download or read book Mathematical Foundations of Programming Semantics written by Stephen Brookes and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1994-05-20 with total page 664 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is the proceedings of the Ninth International Conference on the Mathematical Foundations of Programming Semantics, held in New Orleans in April 1993. The focus of the conference series is the semantics of programming languages and the mathematics which supports the study of the semantics. The semantics is basically denotation. The mathematics may be classified as category theory, lattice theory, or logic. Recent conferences and workshops have increasingly emphasized applications of the semantics and mathematics. The study of the semantics develops with the mathematics and the mathematics is inspired by the applications in semantics. The volume presents current research in denotational semantics and applications of category theory, logic, and lattice theory to semantics.

Download or read book Extensions of Logic Programming written by Evelina Lamma and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1993-02-12 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains papers which investigate how to extend logic programming toward the artificial intelligence and software engineering areas, covering both theoretical and practical aspects. Some papers investigate topics such as abductive reasoning and negation. Some works discuss how to enhance the expressive power of logic programming by introducing constraints, sets, and integration with functional programming. Other papers deal with the structuring of knowledge into modules, taxonomies, and objects, withthe aim of extending logic programming toward software engineering applications. A section is devoted to papers concentrating on proof theory and inspired by Gentzen-style sequent or natural deduction systems. Topics such as concurrency are considered to enhance the expressive power of logic languages. Finally, some papers mainly concernimplementation techniques for some of these logic programming extensions.

Download or read book Design of Master Agreements for OTC Derivatives written by Dietmar Franzen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2000-10-04 with total page 646 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I first came across the issue of derivatives documentation when writing my diploma thesis on measuring the credit risk ofOTC derivatives while I was an economics student at the University of Bonn. Despite the fact that security design has been an area of research in economics for many years and despite the widespread use of derivatives documentation in financial practice, the task of designing contracts for derivatives transactions has not been dealt with in financial theory. The one thing that aroused my curiosity was that two parties with usually opposing interests, namely banking supervisors and the banking industry's lobby, unanimously endorse the use ofcertain provisions in standardized contracts called master agreements. Do these provisions increase the ex ante efficiency of contracts for all parties involved? I actually began my research expecting to find support for the widely held beliefs about the efficiency or inefficiency of certain provisions and was sur prised to obtain results that contradicted the conventional wisdom. I would strongly advise against using these results in any political debate on deriva tives documentation. They were obtained within a highly stylized model with some restrictive assumptions. This work should rather be seen as an attempt to formalize the discussion on derivatives documentation and to challenge the notion that certain provisions are generally ex ante efficient. It is also an invitation to all those advocating the use of certain provisions in master agreements to formalize their arguments and to explain the economic ratio nale behind these provisions.

Download or read book Semantics of Programming Languages written by Carl A. Gunter and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 1992 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Semantics of Programming Languages exposes the basic motivations and philosophy underlying the applications of semantic techniques in computer science. It introduces the mathematical theory of programming languages with an emphasis on higher-order functions and type systems. Designed as a text for upper-level and graduate-level students, the mathematically sophisticated approach will also prove useful to professionals who want an easily referenced description of fundamental results and calculi. Basic connections between computational behavior, denotational semantics, and the equational logic of functional programs are thoroughly and rigorously developed. Topics covered include models of types, operational semantics, category theory, domain theory, fixed point (denotational). semantics, full abstraction and other semantic correspondence criteria, types and evaluation, type checking and inference, parametric polymorphism, and subtyping. All topics are treated clearly and in depth, with complete proofs for the major results and numerous exercises.

Download or read book Categorical Combinators Sequential Algorithms and Functional Programming written by P.-L. Curien and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a revised edition of the monograph which appeared under the same title in the series Research Notes in Theoretical Computer Science, Pit man, in 1986. In addition to a general effort to improve typography, English, and presentation, the main novelty of this second edition is the integration of some new material. Part of it is mine (mostly jointly with coauthors). Here is brief guide to these additions. I have augmented the account of categorical combinatory logic with a description of the confluence properties of rewriting systems of categor ical combinators (Hardin, Yokouchi), and of the newly developed cal culi of explicit substitutions (Abadi, Cardelli, Curien, Hardin, Levy, and Rios), which are similar in spirit to the categorical combinatory logic, but are closer to the syntax of A-calculus (Section 1.2). The study of the full abstraction problem for PCF and extensions of it has been enriched with a new full abstraction result: the model of sequential algorithms is fully abstract with respect to an extension of PCF with a control operator (Cartwright, Felleisen, Curien). An order extensional model of error-sensitive sequential algorithms is also fully abstract for a corresponding extension of PCF with a control operator and errors (Sections 2.6 and 4.1). I suggest that sequential algorithms lend themselves to a decomposition of the function spaces that leads to models of linear logic (Lamarche, Curien), and that connects sequentiality with games (Joyal, Blass, Abramsky) (Sections 2.1 and 2.6).
