The standard also provides information on what area each type of referenced document has been developed for. The aerospace industry requires precise standards. AIR6282 is intended to provide a cross reference of international, aerospace, telecommunications and military standards for use in the qualification process of fiber optic components. Currently qualifying fiber optic components to aerospace requirements involves referencing test methods that have been prepared for areas not related to the aerospace community. These areas are typically, telecommunication and naval where the test methods and required test results have to be adapted to support the requirements of qualifying fiber optic components for aerospace.

In 1986, with the assistance of this author, the National Communications System published FED-STD-1037A, Glossary of Telecommunications Terms, with a few fiber optics tenns. In 1988, the Electronics Industries Association issued EIA-440A, Fiber Optic Terminology, based primarily on PB82-166257. The International Electrotechnical Commission then pub lished IEC 731, Optical Communications, Terms and Definitions. In 1989, the second edition of this dictionary was published.

This Special Issue of Applied Sciences covers all aspects of ultrasonic guided waves (e.g., phased array transducers, meta-materials to control wave propagation characteristics, scattering, attenuation, and signal processing techniques) from the perspective of modeling, simulation, laboratory experiments, or field testing. In order to fully utilize ultrasonic guided waves for these applications, it is necessary to have a firm grasp of their requisite characteristics, which include that they are multimodal, dispersive, and are comprised of unique displacement profiles through the thickness of the waveguide.
