Book excerpt: Emmard, who continued his life as a ranger, accidentally found the Magic Compass and got involved in an incident at the marketplace, and was saved from being executed for violating the Egogon laws by the wise Thubarin. Upon hearing the news that Selmun was after the 12th Crown of, the Egogon king assigned his son Oswin to help Emmard and Thubarin. Setting out to examine the archives in the Silissela kingdom at Thubarin's request, our heroes decided to use the Magic Compass to reveal the black crown of Selmun and protect it before it fell into his hands. With the addition of Prince Chipan and Princess Persida of Silissela, our heroes set out towards the direction shown by the compass and finally found the black crown in the decaying swamps. On the way back to the lands of Silissela, our heroes, who were attacked by Selmun's troops, turned their direction to the ayoles forests in the north and were the obligatory guests of the Ayoles dynasty for a while. Thubarin then sent letters to all the kingdoms on the new world, inviting them to the Yreley council to decide together on the fate of the black crown. As the kings and queens arrived one by one at the council, King Vameki of Nivia made a speech implying that he was on Selmun's side, and left the council, cutting his ties with the alliance. As a result of the council, it was decided to destroy the black crown at any cost, and a call was made to be careful against the growing danger posed by Selmun's dark army. While the kings and queens who came to the meeting one by one discussed this important issue in the meeting, the Nivia king Vameki made the speech that broke his ties with the alliance and left the meeting, implying that he was on Selmun's side. As a result of the meeting, it was decided to destroy the black crown at all costs and called for caution against the growing danger posed by Selmun's dark army. After the Yreley council, Emmard, Thubarin and Oswin, who turned their direction back to the kingdom of Egogon, received the news of Nivia's attack. Going to the Osegend castle for help, Emmard and his companions played a big role in Nivia's defeat after a tough battle. After the joint decision to destroy the crown, Emmard ascended to Nivia's vacant throne and entrusted his friends Thubarin and Dahlia to destroy the crown. Thubarin and Dahlia set out towards the iliosse Mountains with the crown, embarking on new adventures, while Emmard worked to prepare his kingdom against Selmun's threats...

Book excerpt: There exists an Anglo-Saxon manuscript, where we hear of an outcast wife, a husband, his messenger, a lover and a baby. Merge these tales with what we know of the royal family buried at Sutton Hoo in East Anglia, including Raedwald and his brother, Eni, living at the end of the 6th century AD. They believe in the old gods, like Woden, and have not yet encountered Christianity. Their culture is vibrant, exciting, terrifying in its cruelty, and uninhibited in its morality. Travel from the East Anglian fenlands, over northern moors to the remote Northumbrian river where the story reaches its climax. Along the way, discover life in a royal hall or a hovel; cure wounds or inflict them; share a feast or scrape a meal; work fertility charms or protect your folk from evil. Here is a tale of love and betrayal, courage and fear. Niartha, the fictional heroine, outcast from her people, encounters hardship, abuse and loss as she seeks her exiled lover; her survival depends on her practical skills, unexpected in a kings daughter. In their desires and social lives, Anglo-Saxons, although separated from us by fourteen hundred years, are not so very alien, after all.

Book excerpt: Like Emily Dickinson and Walt Whitman, Robert Frost looms large in the American literary landscape, straddling the 19th and 20th centuries like a poetic colossus: whosoever desires passage must, at some point, contend with the monolithic presence of Robert Frost. As they did in Visiting Emily and Visiting Walt, in Visiting Frost, Sheila Coghill and Thom Tammaro once again capture the conversations between contemporary poets and a legend whose voice endures. In his introduction to the collection, Frost biographer Jay Parini likens the poet to a “great power station, one who stands off by himself in the big woods, continuously generating electricity that future poets can tap into for the price of a volume of his poems.” A four-time Pulitzer Prize winner whose work is principally associated with the landscape and life in New England, Frost (1874-1963) was a traditional, psychologically complex, often dark and intense poet. In Visiting Frost, one hundred homage-paying poets--some who knew Frost, most only acquainted through his work--celebrate and reflect that intensity, in effect tapping into his electrical current. By reacting to specific Frost poems, by reinventing others, and by remembering aspects of Frost or by quarreling with him, the contributors speak on behalf of us whose lives have been brightened by the memorization and recitation of such poems as “The Road Not Taken” or “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening.” As the poets pay tribute to Frost's place in American poetry and history, they suggest--more than forty years after his death--just how alive and vital he remains in our collective memory.
