Download or read book Camp Counseling written by Joel F. Meier and published by Waveland Press. This book was released on 2011-12-16 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through the first seven editions of this enduring text, A. Viola Mitchell shared her knowledge and skills with legions of educators, camp directors, and counselors who participated in the organized camp movement. This classic, highly regarded volume has now been thoroughly updated to provide a 21st-century view of the trends, philosophies, and practices of organized camping. The Eighth Edition retains the overarching emphasis on leadership skills and program activities and ideas, updating their treatment with the latest research on positive youth development and outcomes-based programming. New chapters discuss trends in organized camping, efforts to expand opportunities for camp participation, and strategies to increase physical activity among children and youth. Substantially revised topics include modern behavior management tools and techniques, leadership strategies, problem solving, group processes, and the importance of research and evaluation. Throughout, the authors infuse the discussion with a leave no trace conservation ethic that promotes ways to enjoy the outdoors in a responsible, sustainable manner. The essence of organized camping has remained the same throughout its 150-year history: democratic, group living in the outdoors supported by competent, well-trained leaders. The latest edition of Camp Counseling celebrates that essence in every chapter, illuminated by more than 120 new photographs as well as numerous illustrations and boxed exhibits. Moreover, extensive, annotated resource lists in every chapter provide countless opportunities to explore topics in greater depth.
Download or read book The EPICA DML Deep Ice Core written by Sérgio Henrique Faria and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-09-20 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The line-scan images collected in this book represent the most accurate optical record of Antarctic ice cores ever presented, providing an invaluable resource for glaciologists and climate modellers, as well as a fascinating compilation of ice core images for Antarctica enthusiasts. Global warming and the Earth’s past climate are the two main reasons for extracting deep ice cores from Antarctica. Indeed, dust particles, aerosols and other climatic traces deposited on the snow surface, as well as the air trapped in bubbles by compacted snow, produce chronologically ordered strata, making the ice from Antarctica the most accurate and valuable archive of the Earth’s climate over the last million years. In addition, the layered structure produced by these strata, when revealed by appropriate methods, provides indispensable information concerning the flow and mechanical stability of the Antarctic ice sheet, allowing us to assess the current and future impact of global warming on the melting of polar ice caps with much greater precision.

Book excerpt: Polar bears—fierce and majestic—have captivated us for centuries. Feared by explorers, revered by the Inuit, and beloved by zoo goers everywhere, they are a symbol for the harsh beauty and muscular grace of the Arctic. But as global warming threatens the ice caps’ integrity, the polar bear has also come to symbolize the environmental peril that has arisen due to harmful human practices. In the past twenty years alone, the world population of polar bears has shrunk by half. Today they number just 22,000. Urgent and stirring, On Thin Ice is both a celebration and a rallying cry on behalf of one of earth’s greatest natural treasures.

Download or read book Ice marginal and Periglacial Processes and Sediments written by Ireneo Peter Martini and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2011 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding the sediments deposited by glaciers or other cold-climate processes assumes enhanced significance in the context of current global warming and the predicted melt and retreat of glaciers and ice sheets. This volume analyses glacial, proglacial and periglacial settings. Papers include topics such as sedimentation at termini of tidewater glaciers, poorly understood high-mountain features, and slope and aeolian deposits that have been sourced in glacial and periglacial regions and subsequently transported and deposited by azonal processes. Difficulties encountered in inferring Pleistocene and pre-Pleistocene cold-climate conditions when the sedimentary record lacks specific diagnostic indicators are discussed. The main objective of this volume is to establish the validity and limitations of the evidence that is used to achieve reliable palaeogeographic and palaeoclimatic reconstructions. On the much longer geological timescale, an understanding of ice-marginal and periglacial environments may better prepare us for the unavoidable reversal towards cooler and perhaps even glacial times in the future.

Download or read book The U S Marine Corps Mountain Warfare Training Center 1951 2001 written by Orlo K. Steele and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Foreword: The following account represents a significant look at a half century of U.S. Marine Corps effort in the Sierra Nevada mountain range of California. This has been and is still the location of the Corps cold weather and mountain training facility. Over time the needs and demands for Marines and units prepared to operate under these conditions waxed and waned with the real world requirements of deployed forces. This was reflected in the realities of conflicts in the Korean Peninsula, the Cold War's northern and southern flanks, and in the current Global War in Terrorism fight in Afghanistan and elsewhere. While the future is often uncertain, this firm look at the past is useful to show how previous challenges have prompted creative and innovative responses. This is as much a story of evolution as an institution.--p. iii.
