Book Frontiers in Supramolecular Organic Chemistry and Photochemistry

Download or read book Frontiers in Supramolecular Organic Chemistry and Photochemistry written by Hans-Jörg Schneider and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the introductory chapter: ep Supramolecular chemistry is chemistry beyond the molecule, the designed chemistry of the intermolecular bond. It is a novel, highly interdisciplinary field of science covering the chemical, physical and biological features of chemical species held together and organized by means of intermolecular binding interactions. The common thread of all areas of supramolecular chemistry is the information stored in the structural features of molecules and of supermolecules. Thus, it is a kind of molecular information science that is progressively shaping up. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The intellectual and utilitarian opportunities that lie at the frontiers of chemistry have been recently emphasized by the Pimentel Report. Such report recommends that in the field of chemical research priority should be given to "understanding chemical reactivity" and proposes initiatives aimed at the clarification of factors that control the rates of reaction and the development of new synthetic pathways for chemical change. In the broad field of chemical reactivity, a discipline that has grown with an extraordinary rate is photochemistry. Since the knowledge of the photochemical properties at the molecular level has made a substantial progress in the last few years, there is currently a trend to study more and more complex photochemical systems. In particular, an emerging and rapidly expanding branch of photochemistry is that concerning studies of assemblies of molecular components properly combined so as to obtain light-induced functions (supramolecular photochemistry). Although much of the current work in supramolecular photochemistry is fundamental in nature, it is clear that progress in this field will be most rewarding for several applications concerning the interaction of light with matter. In particular, it will allow us to pursue research aimed at the photochemical conversion of solar energy by means of artificial systems and to make progress towards futuristic branches of science called "photonics" (photo-generated electron migration processes on a molecular basis) and "chemionics" (design of components, circuitry, and information treatment at the molecular level).

Book Engineering Processes for Bioseparations

Download or read book Engineering Processes for Bioseparations written by LAURENCE R. WEATHERLEY and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of biotechnology in chemical synthesis offers up numerous advantages to the engineer in the process industries, but it also presents a number of fundamental challenges and difficulties which impinge directly on separation process requirements. The use of biochemical separations has grown significantly during the past decade, and is especially used in process industries such as healthcare and food processing. However it is becoming increasingly more important in areas such as recycling and waste-water treatment and as industry shifts towards cleaner processes biochemical separations will continue to grow. The two main objectives of this book are to focus on the application of existing separation process techniques to the recovery and purification of biologically derived products and to examine the state of knowledge of new techniques which have future potential. Within these objectives the complexities and breadth of problems associated with biological separations are discussed, specific engineering techniques are featured and their adaptation to biochemical separations are highlighted.

The initial euphoria about molecular biology as the final solution for any problem has dwindled and the field agrees now that only the combined efforts of all facets of biology will at some day answer the question posed more than hundred years ago: "How can plants see?". One conclusion can be drawn from the current knowledge as summarized in this volume. The answer will most likely not be the same for all systems.
