Book excerpt: Meditation, or meditative prayer, can seem like a huge and rather frightening task. After all, it is a practice most often associated with the great saints. But you do not need to be a great saint to create prayers and meditations that deepen your own faith and move other peoples hearts. From under the Bushel demonstrates, describes, and encourages a type of meditative prayer that takes you more deeply inside the Bible and your own religious feelings than you may have been before. By imagining yourself actually present in biblical storiesboth in the simple moments or at dramatic eventsyou can use your own personal curiosity to form questions about what you have read. Author Linda L. Greene shows you how you can use your empathy to imagine their answers, to go behind the scenes, to carry on mental conversations with people, and to respond in your own unique way to the events you are considering. The Bible is about God, but it is also, wonderfully and always, about human beings too. There were achy backs and grumbling stomachs in the crowds waiting for Jesus. There were financial and marital worries. There were child-rearing problems. There were even pride and petty jealousies among the disciples. If you forget the humanity of the people in the Bible, you will miss many opportunities to feel as though youre right there with them and to meditate on the moments of their lives.

Book For a Glory and a Covering

Download or read book For a Glory and a Covering written by Douglas Wilson and published by Canon Press & Book Service. This book was released on 2009-08-28 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Lord, here am I. Change him." "God, I'm trying. She started it." Common claims but they're so far from Trinitarian life. We invoke Christ at the wedding then seem to default to an alien theology afterward. In this simple and practical book, Doug Wilson offers a richer and more comprehensive theology of marriage than in his prior works. Here he grounds marriage in the life of the Trinity and in the life of the church. Marriage is intended to be a glorious picture of the gospel, and marriages grounded elsewhere regularly create a small hell on earth. Don't miss the riches of marriage.

Book John Wesley s Social Ethics

Download or read book John Wesley s Social Ethics written by Manfred Marquardt and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2000-08-23 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, first published in German in 1976, still stands as the most definitive, comprehensive treatment of John Wesley's social ethics. John Wesley's Social Ethics offers a balanced treatment that dispels notions that Wesley can easily be categorized as only an evangelist or only a social reformer. It demonstrates that Wesley's theological and spiritual concerns were catalytic in his social program. It encourages a rethinking of the importance of theology for social ethics in the Methodist tradition.

Book The Storyteller

    Book Details:
  • Author : Dean Reding
  • Publisher : Xulon Press
  • Release : 2009-09
  • ISBN : 1607918668
  • Pages : 94 pages

Download or read book The Storyteller written by Dean Reding and published by Xulon Press. This book was released on 2009-09 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Storyteller looks at the parables of Jesus as told in Matthew, Mark, and Luke. By comparing the parables in each gospel we may be able to conclude why the writers of the gospels selected to tell the identical story. Is there a diverse meaning for each one, or do they all communicate the same message. We can definitely tell that some of the parables had multiple meanings and some were surely intended for a specific audience. A parable can be over analyzed, however, knowing to whom they were written and why they were told is a compelling study. Dean Reding was raised in the Texas panhandle during the fifties where the winters make you wish for summer and the summers make you wish for winter. He received a firm foundation in the Word under Reverend Mack A McCoy. He continued to study to show himself approved through three years at Southwestern Theological Seminary in Fort Worth and two years in the masters program at California State University at Long Beach. Since retirement from a major oil company he has been researching and writing this study of the Parables of Jesus as well as other books and poems.
