Book Memory the City and the Legacy of World War II in East Central Europe

Download or read book Memory the City and the Legacy of World War II in East Central Europe written by Uilleam Blacker and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-06-27 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the Second World War, millions of people across Eastern Europe, displaced as a result of wartime destruction, deportations and redrawing of state boundaries, found themselves living in cities that were filled with the traces of the foreign cultures of the former inhabitants. In the immediate post-war period these traces were not acknowledged, the new inhabitants going along with official policies of oblivion, the national narratives of new post-war regimes, and the memorializing of the victors. In time, however, and increasingly over recent decades, the former "other pasts" have been embraced and taken on board as part of local cultural memory. This book explores this interesting and increasingly important phenomenon. It examines official ideologies, popular memory, literature, film, memorialization and tourism to show how other pasts are being incorporated into local cultural memory. It relates these developments to cultural theory and argues that the relationship between urban space, cultural memory and identity in Eastern Europe is increasingly becoming a question not only of cultural politics, but also of consumption and choice, alongside a tendency towards the cosmopolitanization of memory.

Download or read book Decades of Crisis written by Ivan T. Berend and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-11-15 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Only by understanding Central and Eastern Europe's turbulent history during the first half of the twentieth century can we hope to make sense of the conflicts and crises that have followed World War II and, after that, the collapse of Soviet-controlled state socialism. Ivan Berend looks closely at the fateful decades preceding World War II and at twelve countries whose absence from the roster of major players was enough in itself, he says, to precipitate much of the turmoil. As waves of modernization swept over Europe, the less developed countries on the periphery tried with little or no success to imitate Western capitalism and liberalism. Instead they remained, as Berend shows, rural, agrarian societies notable for the tenacious survival of feudal and aristocratic institutions. In that context of frustration and disappointment, rebellion was inevitable. Berend leads the reader skillfully through the maze of social, cultural, economic, and political changes in Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia, Poland, Romania, Bulgaria, Albania, Austria, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, and the Soviet Union, showing how every path ended in dictatorship and despotism by the start of World War II.

Book Central and Eastern Europe after the First World War

Download or read book Central and Eastern Europe after the First World War written by Burkhard Olschowsky and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2021-11-22 with total page 435 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume focuses on the years following the First World War (1918–1923), when political, military, cultural, social and economic developments consolidated to a high degree in Eastern Europe. This period was shaped, on the one hand, by the efforts to establish an international structure for peace and to set previously oppressed nations on the road to emancipation. On the other hand, it was also defined by political revisionism and territorial claims, as well as a level of political violence that was effectively a continuation of the war in many places, albeit under modified conditions. Political decision-makers sought to protect the emerging nation states from radical political utopias but simultaneously had to rise to the challenges of a social and economic crisis, manage the reconstruction of the many extensively devastated landscapes and provide for the social care and support of victims of war.

Book Constructing Nationalities in East Central Europe

Download or read book Constructing Nationalities in East Central Europe written by Pieter M. Judson and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2005 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The hundred years between the revolutions of 1848 and the population transfers of the mid-twentieth century saw the nationalization of culturally complex societies in East Central Europe. This fact has variously been explained in terms of modernization, state building, and nation-building theories, each of which treats the process of nationalization as something inexorable, a necessary component of modernity. Although more recently social scientists gesture to the contingencies that may shape these larger developments, this structural approach makes scholars far less attentive to the "hard work" (ideological, political, social) undertaken by individuals and groups at every level of society who tried themselves to build "national" societies." "The essays in this volume make us aware of how complex, multi-dimensional and often contradictory this nationalization process in East Central Europe actually was. The authors document attempts and failures by nationalist politicians, organizations, activists, and regimes from 1848 through 1948 to give East-Central Europeans a strong sense of national self-identification. They remind us that only the use of dictatorial powers in the 20th century could actually transform the fantasy of nationalization into a reality, albeit a brutal one."--BOOK JACKET.

Book Framing History in East Central Europe and Beyond

Download or read book Framing History in East Central Europe and Beyond written by Ferdinand Kühnel and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on with total page 554 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the 1970s todays Austrian Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research (Bundesministerium für Bildung, Wissenschaft und Forschung, BMBWF) supported the founding of the Center for Austrian Studies at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis and the Austrian Chair at Stanford University in California. These foundings were the initial incentives for the worldwide `spreading' of similar institutions; currently, nine Centers for Austrian and Central European Studies exist in seven countries on three continents. The funding of the Ministry enables to connect senior scholars with young scholars, to help young PhD students, to participate in and to benefit from the scientific connection of experienced researchers, and to get in touch with the national scientific community by `sniffing scientific air', as the Austrians like to say. Furthermore, it aims to avoid prejudices, and to spread a better understanding and knowledge about Austria and Central Europe by promoting scientific exchange.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Covering territory from Russia in the east to Germany and Austria in the west, The Routledge History of East Central Europe since 1700 explores the origins and evolution of modernity in this turbulent region. This book applies fresh critical approaches to major historical controversies and debates, expanding the study of a region that has experienced persistent and profound change and yet has long been dominated by narrowly nationalist interpretations. Written by an international team of contributors that reflects the increasing globalization and pluralism of East Central European studies, chapters discuss key themes such as economic development, the relationship between religion and ethnicity, the intersection between culture and imperial, national, wartime, and revolutionary political agendas, migration, women’s and gender history, ideologies and political movements, the legacy of communism, and the ways in which various states in East Central Europe deployed and were formed by the politics of memory and commemoration. This book uses new methodologies in order to fundamentally reshape perspectives on the development of East Central Europe over the past three centuries. Transnational and comparative in approach, this volume presents the latest research on the social, cultural, political and economic history of modern East Central Europe, providing an analytical and comprehensive overview for all students of this region.

Book Europe Since World War II

Download or read book Europe Since World War II written by Norman Luxenburg and published by Carbondale : Southern Illinois University Press. This book was released on 1973 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Europe since World War II has seen many changes, and a number of books on the subject have appeared in the last twenty-five years. Starting from the vantage point of the 1970s, and with a fresh, new emphasis on the improvements in the everyday life of the average worker, Norman Luxenburg here gives us an up-to-date, concise account of the European nations after the war. Cutting through the welter of extremely detailed political and territorialissues other books on this subject have presented, Luxenburg sketches the relevant matters in prewar and postwar Europe and concentrates on the "big picture"--the growth that has taken place since the war. Luxenburg's most important chapter describes the big change as being neither geographical nor political. The generation of West Europeans coming to maturity in the 1970s, he notes, is the best-paid, best-fed, best-housed, best-clothed, and best-educated generation Europe has ever produced. Hence, the great change and the greatest revolution since the two wars is the improvement of technology and productivity on the farm and in industry. The book's wealth of clear statistical and illustrative material in concise form makes it a convenient-size handbook for the study of modern European history. General readers interested in a survey of the subject will find the book valuable as well as interesting.
