Book From the Cotton Field to the Computer Field

Download or read book From the Cotton Field to the Computer Field written by John Robert Finch and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2003-05-07 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Cotton Field to the Computer Field is an autobiographical narrative about the life of John Robert Finch. It chronicles his journey through the military, in the work force, and within family exchanges. It also examines the challenges he faced as a black man from the south and his involvement as a descendant of a former slave. The narrative begins (prelude) with the author?s motivation for writing the narrative. He expounds upon the cathartic rewards of writing the work as well as the pride that has come from knowing his roots. He writes about his family as cotton sharecroppers and its unending cycle of work for the landlord, "Regardless of the how hard we worked or how many bales of cotton we produced in a season, we never made enough money in the season to break even with the landlord. Thus, the landlord had us hooked for another cotton life cycle". This book is fascinating--rich in history and cultural flavor. His work illustrate life as a constant process of ups and downs, obstacles and roadblocks, but proves eloquently that challenges are surmountable and that faith should be kept in that, among other things. From the Cotton Field to the Computer Field is a joy to read ? easy and colloquial.

Book From Cotton Fields to University Leadership

Download or read book From Cotton Fields to University Leadership written by Charlie Nelms and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2019-03-29 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The renowned leader in higher education provides “a testament to the power of aspiration, character and education to overcome poverty and adversity” (Michael L. Lomax, President & CEO, United Negro College Fund). Charlie Nelms had audaciously big dreams. Growing up black in the Deep South in the 1950s and 1960s, working in cotton fields, and living in poverty, Nelms dared to dream that he could do more with his life than work for white plantation owners sun-up to sun-down. Inspired by his parents, who first dared to dream that they could own their own land and have the right to vote, Nelms chose education as his weapon of choice for fighting racism and inequality. With hard work, determination, and the critical assistance of mentors who counseled him along the way, he found his way from the cotton fields of Arkansas to university leadership roles. Becoming the youngest and the first African American chancellor of a predominately white institution in Indiana, he faced tectonic changes in higher education during those ensuing decades of globalization, growing economic disparity, and political divisiveness. From Cotton Fields to University Leadership is an uplifting story about the power of education, the impact of community and mentorship, and the importance of dreaming big. “In his memoir, the realities of his life take on the qualities of a good docudrama, providing the back story to the development of a remarkable educational leader. His is ‘the examined life,’ filled with honesty, humor, and humility. While this is uniquely Charlie’s story, it is a story that will lift the hearts of many and inspire future generations of leaders.” —Betty J. Overton, Director, National Forum on Higher Education for the Public Good

Download or read book Virtual Worlds written by Jean-Claude Heudin and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2000-06-21 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Virtual Worlds 2000 is the second in a series of international scientific conferences on virtual worlds held at the International Institute of Multimedia in Paris La Défense (Pôle Universitaire Léonard de Vinci). The term "virtual worlds" generally refers to virtual reality applications or experi ences. We extend the use of these terms to describe experiments that deal with the idea of synthesizing digital worlds on computers. Thus, virtual worlds could be de fined as the study of computer programs that implement digital worlds. Constructing such complex artificial worlds seems to be extremely difficult to do in any sort of complete and realistic manner. Such a new discipline must benefit from a large amount of work in various fields: virtual reality and advanced computer graphics, artificial life and evolutionary computation, simulation of physical systems, and more. Whereas virtual reality has largely concerned itself with the design of 3D immersive graphical spaces, and artificial life with the simulation of living organisms, the field of virtual worlds, is concerned with the synthesis of digital universes considered as wholes, with their own "physical" and "biological" laws.

Book Integrated Pest Management

Download or read book Integrated Pest Management written by Dharam P Abrol and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-08-28 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Integrated Pest Management: Current Concepts and Ecological Perspective presents an overview of alternative measures to traditional pest management practices using biological control and biotechnology. The removal of some highly effective broad-spectrum chemicals, caused by concerns over environmental health and public safety, has resulted in the development of alternative, reduced risk crop protection products. These products, less toxic to the environment and easily integrated into biological control systems, target specific life stages or pest species. Predation — recognized as a suitable, long-term strategy — effectively suppresses pests in biotechnological control systems. Integrated Pest Management covers these topics and more. It explores the current ecological approaches in alternative solutions, such as biological control agents, parasites and predators, pathogenic microorganisms, pheromones and natural products as well as ecological approaches for managing invasive pests, rats, suppression of weeds, safety of pollinators, role of taxonomy and remote sensing in IPM and future projections of IPM. This book is a useful resource to entomologists, agronomists, horticulturists, and environmental scientists. Fills a gap in the literature by providing critical analysis of different management strategies that have a bearing on agriculture, sustainability and environmental protection Synthesizes research and practice on integrated pest management Emphasizes an overview of management strategies, with critical evaluation of each in the larger context of ecologically based pest management

Download or read book Integrated Pest Management written by J. Apple and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past decade is probably unparalleled as a period of dynamic changes in the crop protection sciences-entomology, plant pathology, and weed science. These changes have been stimulated by the broad-based concern for a quality environment, by the hazard of intensified pest damage to our food and fiber production systems, by the inadequacies and spiraling costs of conventional crop protection programs, by the toxicological hazards of unwise pesticide usage, and by the negative interactions of independent and often narrowly based crop protection practices. During this period, the return to ecological approaches in crop protection was widely accepted, first within entomology and ultimately within the other crop protection and related disciplines. Integrated pest management is fast becoming accepted as the rubric describing a crop pro tection system that integrates methodologies across all crop protection dis ciplines in a fashion that is compatible with the crop production system. Much has been written and spoken about "integrated control" and "pest management," but to date no treatise has been devoted to the concept of "in tegrated pest management" in the broadened context as described above. Most of the manuscripts in this volume were developed from papers presented in a symposium at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Ad vancement of Science held in San Francisco in February, 1974. In arranging that symposium, the editors involved plant pathologists, entomologists, and weed scientists.
