Excerpt: ... 12 So round his melancholy neck A rope he did entwine, And for the second time in life Enlisted in the Line! 13 One end he tied around a beam, And then removed his pegs, And, as his legs were off, of course He soon was off his legs. 14 And there he hung till he was dead As any nail in town; For, though distress had cut him up, It could not cut him down!--Thomas Hood. BURIAL OF SIR JOHN MOORE Sir John Moore, commanding the British forces in Spain in the war with Napoleon, was killed at the battle of Corunna, Spain, January 16, 1809. The battle occurred at the end of a long and hard retreat, and although the English had the advantage, they embarked at Corunna after the battle and returned to England. The French forces were under Marshal Soult. Alison's History of Europe says that Moore "was wrapped by his attendants in his military cloak and laid in a grave hastily formed on the ramparts of Corunna, where a monument was soon after erected over his uncoffined remains by the generosity of the French Marshal Ney. Not a word was spoken as the melancholy interment by torchlight took place; silently they laid him in his grave, while the distant cannon of the battlefield fired the funeral honors to his memory. "This tomb, originally erected by the French, since enlarged by the British, bears a simple but touching inscription, written of the hero over whose remains it is placed. Few spots in Europe will ever be more the object of general interest. His very misfortunes were the means which procured him immortal fame--his disastrous retreat, bloody death, and finally his tomb on a foreign strand, far from home and friends. There is scarcely a Spaniard but has heard of his tomb and speaks of it with a strange kind of awe." Many fantastic legends have...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Leaves From Life: A Collection of Poems I live once more in this twilight hour The years that are long since flown, And I see the faces, and clasp the hands That I clasped in the days agone. 'tis a castle built in an idle hour For 'tis memory's hand I know, That has led me back, like a passive child, To the days of the Long Ago. I sit once more 'neath the vine-wreathed porch, And I enter the grand old home, The dear old home of my childhood's days Where sorrow had never come. And a merry group we are gathered there, And a voice that is sweet and low. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Poems of Nature and Life But, happening to step into the store where his book was announced to be on sale, and finding no copies there which were not hidden under the counter, the poet ordered all the remaining Copies of the edition to be sent to his own residence, and gave them away privately to any persons who desired to read them. Possibly these facts may lend new interest to the introductory poem, The Author to his Book in Early Spring, and the lines to the Reader. They Show, at least, how singularly sincere were the senti ments there expressed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Joy O' Life: And Other Poems The Joy O' Life Oh, the Joy o' Life goes singing through the highway, Oh, the Joy o' Life goes swinging through the green, And the form of her is slight as a crescent moon at night And her face is some strange flower none hath seen. She beckoned me and what could I but follow? (Oh, I have seen the glamour of her eyes!) Through the winding o' the ways, through the hundred nights and days Must I follow where she lures me woman-wise. My plough - I left it idle in the furrow - My harvest lies for other eyes to scan, For it's fare ye well to loam, to hearthstone and to home When the Joy o' Life is calling to a man. Oh, the Joy o' Life she calls me from the valley, Oh, the Joy o' Life, she hails me from the height, And her voice is like the thrill of the thrush when noon is still And her laughter is the lilting of delight. I follow through the sunshine and the moonshine - (Oh, I have seen the waving of her hand!) In the paths that know the fleet, flying touches of her feet At the music of her mocking of command. My friend - I left him fasting at my threshold - My sweetheart is another man's to wife, For it's fare ye well my own, and it's laugh and turn alone When a man has heard the voice of Joy o' Life.
