Download or read book Blockbuster written by Tom Shone and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2004-12-07 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It's a typical summer Friday night and the smell of popcorn is in the air. Throngs of fans jam into air-conditioned multiplexes to escape for two hours in the dark, blissfully lost in Hollywood's latest glittery confection complete with megawatt celebrities, awesome special effects, and enormous marketing budgets. The world is in love with the blockbuster movie, and these cinematic behemoths have risen to dominate the film industry, breaking box office records every weekend. With the passion and wit of a true movie buff and the insight of an internationally renowned critic, Tom Shone is the first to make sense of this phenomenon by taking readers through the decades that have shaped the modern blockbuster and forever transformed the face of Hollywood. The moment the shark fin broke the water in 1975, a new monster was born. Fast, visceral, and devouring all in its path, the blockbuster had arrived. In just a few weeks Jaws earned more than $100 million in ticket sales, an unprecedented feat that heralded a new era in film. Soon, blockbuster auteurs such as Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, and James Cameron would revive the flagging fortunes of the studios and lure audiences back into theaters with the promise of thrills, plenty of action, and an escape from art house pretension. But somewhere along the line, the beast they awakened took on a life of its own, and by the 1990s production budgets had escalated as quickly as profits. Hollywood entered a topsy-turvy world ruled by marketing and merchandising mavens, in which flops like Godzilla made money and hits had to break records just to break even. The blockbuster changed from a major event that took place a few times a year into something that audiences have come to expect weekly, piling into the backs of one another in an annual demolition derby that has left even Hollywood aghast. Tom Shone has interviewed all the key participants -- from cinematic visionaries like Spielberg and Lucas and the executives who greenlight these spectacles down to the effects wizards who detonated the Death Star and blew up the White House -- in order to reveal the ways in which blockbusters have transformed how Hollywood makes movies and how we watch them. As entertaining as the films it chronicles, Blockbuster is a must-read for any fan who delights in the magic of the movies.

Book excerpt: Despite his status as the most commercially successful moviemaker of all time, Steven Spielberg has not yet fully received the wide-ranging critical analysis that his work so richly deserves. With an extraordinarily varied body of work including blockbuster adventures and historical dramas, family films and R-rated interrogations into representations of violence, films that move between the darkness and the light, Spielberg is always challenging himself and his audiences. This volume, the second book collaboration between the critical magazine Reverse Shot and Museum of the Moving Image, offers a comprehensive film-by-film analysis from twelve writers, sometimes with opposing takes on his films. Whether delving into the existential horrors of Jaws; the identity politics of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom; the emotional rapture of The Color Purple and Empire of the Sun; the historical inquiry of Schindler's List, Amistad, Munich, Lincoln, and Bridge of Spies; the visionary science-fiction of A.I. and Minority Report; and everything in between, these critics offer fresh insights into the career of a director who changed the movies.

  • Author : Qiliang He
  • Publisher : Hong Kong University Press

Download or read book Working the System written by Qiliang He and published by Hong Kong University Press. This book was released on 2023-01-03 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Working the System: Motion Picture, Filmmakers, and Subjectivities in Mao-Era China, 1949–1966, Qiliang He inquired into the making of the new citizenry in Mao-era China (1949–1976) by studying five preeminent Shanghai-based filmmakers. These case studies shed light on how individuals’ subjectivities took shape in the cinematic arena under a new sociopolitical system after 1949. He suggests that a filmmaker’s subjectivity was not fixed or stable but constantly in flux, requiring a host of “subjectivizing practices” to (re)shape and consolidate it. These filmmakers endeavored to reap maximal benefits from Mao’s sociopolitical system and minimize the disadvantages that would make them victims under the system. In short, Qiliang He argues that the filmmakers not only worked under the socialist system imposed upon them but also worked the system in their best interests. “Through five chosen filmmakers’ creative control and their negotiation of their professional status within China’s newly adopted socialist system, the author presents a compelling case that illustrates how individual filmmakers constantly adjusted themselves professionally and ideologically to survive in a fast-changing industry and a highly politicized society.” —Lin Feng, University of Leicester “This book is a strong example of how much more we can learn about Mao-era Chinese culture if we approach it less as alien due to Cold War prejudices and instead think of artists as creating under professional constraints in China just as they do everywhere.” —Jason McGrath, University of Minnesota
