Book excerpt: On 9 September 1943 the United States Fifth Army landed at Salerno, commencing a lengthy and costly campaign that would transit the Italian Peninsula. Lieutenant General Mark W. Clark commanded this army. His many supporters, including Winston Churchill and General Dwight D. Eisenhower, considered him a brilliant staff officer and trainer. His detractors, including General George S. Patton, considered him overly ambitious and self serving. Clark had been promoted ahead of many senior and experienced officers, some of whom were now his subordinate commanders within the Fifth Army. His army would come under the jurisdiction of the Fifteenth Army Group, a combined American-British Headquarters commanded by General Harold Alexander, an Englishmen. Clark would command a number of foreign troops, including the British X Corps, the New Zealand Corps and the French Expeditionary Corps. Throughout this campaign, Clark would face the complexities of coalition command, tactical in nature but with strategic consequences. This thesis contends that the command arrangements within Fifteenth Army Group, together with biased perceptions, greatly influenced the decision making of General Clark, an accomplished staff officer yet inexperienced army commander.

The perspective, as seen through the eyes of its author, General Fred Walker, is refreshing for its refusal to rely upon hindsight and revisionist history. Walker led a division longer than any other American officer during World War II. The 36th earned a formidable reputation—and paid a high price for that distinction. Only five divisions in the entire U.S. Army suffered more casualties than the 36th during the course of the war. Some of the division’s fighting included the hard battles of Salerno and Monte Cassino. The 36th was assigned an assault river crossing at the Rapido to outflank the Cassino position and although several companies made it to the far bank, their tank support failed to cross the river. A German panzer grenadier counterattack pushed the infantry of the 36th back across the river with heavy losses. General Mark Clark, the 5th Army Commander, in what appeared to be an effort to scapegoat, relieved several key 36th division officers, although General Walker was retained as its commanding general. Creating this book series brought back many emotive sights, sounds, stories and emotions (unfortunately, not the food) I felt while on the tour. We hope it provides some sense of that experience for the reader.Many excellent academic books have been written explaining Italian battlefield events to the detail, and we include these books in Frank's exhaustive bibliography. However, this book brings the tour experience, being there on the ground, as close as possible to reality for the reader by showing you many images from where the armies fought and died to set Italy free and attack the "soft underbelly" of the Third Reich. Its purpose is to have the reader experience the tour as we did, incorporating images from the extensive video I took that September in Italy. It was hard to imagine the violence that happened there over 75 years ago. Our tour guide, Frank de Planta, with color commentary from Ed Bearss, provided an emotive and accurate explanation of the events, the scenes, and the sacrifice. We hope this book provides at least a fraction of the experience many on this tour experienced there.
