In this book the author makes a direct attack on the current role of psychology in education, showing important differences between psychologistse(tm) and educatorse(tm) interests in topics such as learning, motivation and development, and questioning the validity of many of Piagete(tm)s most fundamental ideas. He compares two developmental theories that superficially have much in common e" Platoe(tm)s and Piagete(tm)s e" and focuses on their implications for learning in the classroom. He shows why Platoe(tm)s theory (whether or not we agree with it) serves as a model of a useful educational theory and why Piagete(tm)s theory has no implications for education. He reaches the conclusion that psychological theories and research based on them are irrelevant to educational practice.

Eugene Subbotsky persuasively demonstrates that many children--and some adults--will often accept mysterious disappearances and creations, perceiving them not as tricks or illusions but as actual occurrences. His analysis clearly shows that alongside our everyday belief in object permanence, we also have a set of quasi-magical beliefs that can be activated by appropriate situations and behaviors. The acceptability of these beliefs will vary from culture to culture, and will be widespread among preliterate peoples but less obvious in advanced industrial countries. The author, a Russian psychologist, draws on his own extensive research and examines other taken-for-granted concepts, such as the distinction between animate and inanimate. Foundations of the Mind, amply illustrated with experimental material, has enormous implications for the study of both child development and the psychology of human beliefs. It attacks our complacent and often culturally biased faith in the nature of reality, and as such will become required reading for all psychologists.

Platonist or linguistic modes of explanation have become fashionable, whilst abstrac tionist and constructionist theories have ceased to be so. Beth and Piaget approach this problem in their book from two somewhat different points of view. Beth's approach is largely historico-critical, although he discusses the nature of heuristic thinking in mathematics, whilst that of Piaget is psycho-genetic. The major purpose of this introduction is to summarise some of the main points of their respective arguments. In the first part of this book Beth makes a detailed study of the history of philosophical thinking about mathematics, and draws our attention to the important role played by the Aristotelian methodology of the demon strative sciences. This, he tells us, is characterised by three postulates: (a) deductivity, (b) self-evidence, and (c) reality. The last postulate asserts that the primitive notions of a demonstrative science must have reference to a domain of real entities in order to have significance. On the Aristote lian view discursive reasoning plays a major role in mathematics, whilst pure intuition plays a somewhat subordinate one.

This theme is that the only possibility of truth lies in measurability and that knowledge is not recognisable unless it satisfies this criterion. This work is concentrated in the first instance on Piaget's claims that mental structures are exclusively logical mathematical in form, especially since this part of his work has received least attention. This book was first published in 1985.
