Book excerpt: The Pirate King is the author’s debut novel, blending history, action, adventure, romance, the epic Napoleonic era, and piracy into a fictional story based on actual historical events. If you’re looking for swashbuckling adventure and romance on the high seas, read The Pirate King! While betraying Thomas Parsons, a tavern patron, to the occupying British, Frenchman Michel LeFevers learns of a considerable tax payment being shipped from Calcutta to London. Always the opportunist, LeFevers sells the information to his cohort, Nazar Samburu, a Madagascar pirate king. Unknowingly, LeFevers sets off a series of events that will bring him, Nazar, his bitter wife Maha, and the betrayed Thomas Parsons together on an epic adventure, with Thomas becoming essential to everyone’s survival. Upon learning that his beautiful wife Emily has fallen victim to Mediterranean Barbary Pirates, Thomas gains assistance from the people he so courageously saved. Entangling England, India, Madagascar, Algiers, the British Navy, the British Tea Company, Nazar’s pirate league, and the Barbary Pirates, Thomas is determined to rescue his beloved. Tottering upon the dawn of a new era, the fate of the post-Napoleonic world could very well hinge upon the outcome.

Book Fredric Jameson and Film Theory

Download or read book Fredric Jameson and Film Theory written by Keith B. Wagner and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2022-01-14 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Frederic Jameson and Film Theory is the first collection of its kind, it assesses and critically responds to Fredric Jameson’s remarkable contribution to film theory. The essays assembled explore key Jamesonian concepts—such as totality, national allegory, geopolitics, globalization, representation, and pastiche—and his historical schema of realism, modernism, and postmodernism, considering, in both cases, how these can be applied, revised, expanded and challenged within film studies. Featuring essays by leading and emerging voices in the field, the volume probes the contours and complexities of neoliberal capitalism across the globe and explores world cinema's situation within these forces by deploying and adapting Jamesonian concepts, and placing them in dialogue with other theoretical paradigms. The result is an innovative and rigorously analytical effort that offers a range of Marxist-inspired approaches towards cinemas from Asia, Latin America, Europe, and North America in the spirit of Jameson's famous rallying cry: 'always historicize!'.

Book The Pirate King

    Book Details:
  • Author : Graham A. Thomas
  • Publisher : Simon and Schuster
  • Release : 2015-09-08
  • ISBN : 1632208776
  • Pages : 344 pages

Download or read book The Pirate King written by Graham A. Thomas and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2015-09-08 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A compelling account of history's most famous pirate. The Pirate King is the compelling true story of a Welshman who became one of the most ruthless and brutal buccaneers of the golden age of piracy. The inspiration for dozens of fictionalized pirates in film, television, and literature—as well the namesake of one of the world’s most popular rum brands—Captain Sir Henry Morgan was matchless among pirates and privateers. Unlike most of his contemporaries, he was not hunted down and killed or captured by the authorities. Instead he was considered a hero in England and given a knighthood and eventually was made governor of Jamaica. As Graham Thomas reveals in this fresh biography of this complex and intriguing character, Morgan was an exceptional military leader whose prime motivation was to amass as much wealth as he could by sacking and plundering settlements, towns, and cities up and down the Spanish Main. Featuring graphic accounts of Morgan’s exploits, eventually leading to an unparalleled rise to power and legitimacy, The Pirate King is a riveting read sure to become a key text in pirate literature. Thomas dispels myths and separates fact from fiction as he presents an intriguing new portrait of one of history’s most compelling figures. Book Piracy and the State

Download or read book Piracy and the State written by Martin Dimitrov and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2009-09-07 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this original study of intellectual property rights (IPR) in relation to state capacity, Dimitrov analyzes this puzzle by offering the first systematic analysis of all IPR enforcement avenues in China, across all IPR subtypes. He shows that the extremely high volume of enforcement provided for copyrights and trademarks is unfortunately of a low quality, and as such serves only to perpetuate IPR violations. In the area of patents, however, he finds a low volume of high-quality enforcement. In light of these findings, the book develops a theory of state capacity that conceptualizes the Chinese state as simultaneously weak and strong. The book draws on extensive fieldwork in China and five other countries, as well as on 10 unique IPR enforcement datasets that exploit previously unexplored sources, including case files of private investigation firms.

Book Geographical Indications at the Crossroads of Trade Development and Culture

Download or read book Geographical Indications at the Crossroads of Trade Development and Culture written by Irene Calboli and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2017-06-16 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historically, few topics have proven to be so controversial in international intellectual property as the protection of geographical indications (GIs). The adoption of TRIPS in 1994 did not resolve disagreements, and countries worldwide continue to quarrel today as to the nature, the scope, and the enforcement of GI protection nationally and internationally. Thus far, however, there is little literature addressing GI protection from the point of view of the Asia-Pacific region, even though countries in this region have actively discussed the topic and in several instances have promoted GIs as a mechanism to foster local development and safeguard local culture. This book, edited by renowned intellectual property scholars, fills the void in the current literature and offers a variety of contributions focusing on the framework and effects of GI protection in the Asia-Pacific region. The book is available as Open Access.

Sudhir, after constant failures on his part which led to an unwanted divorce, was thrust by a strange twist of faith on an isolated island. He gained unfathomable power, which had no scientific explanation. He was not a politician, and yet, he was forced to pit his mind against a globally powerful nation, and that nation was guided by a man whose magical powers far exceeded that of his own. His school curriculum never taught him to fight with a sword, nor travel time. Yet, here he was, travelling back in time to unravel a mystery that harassed a royal family. Here he was again, somehow managing to ward off ruthless, bloodthirsty, sword-wielding pirates with his own clumsily held sword! To protect himself from dying? Obviously, yes! But, also to protect the fabulous wealth of gold, silver, rubies, diamonds and so much more that were lost in the seven ships around the year 1782.
