Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To commemorate the 150th Anniversary of the end of the Civil War, Diversion Books is publishing seminal works of the era: stories told by the men and women who led, who fought, and who lived in an America that had come apart at the seams. James Longstreet served under General Robert E. Lee and witnessed the Civil War from start to finish. This chronicle of his service is a must-have work for readers interested in the Civil War, its battles, and its legacy. As the chief strategist to the Commander of the Confederate Army, Longstreet generated many of the military plans that the generals of the South took into battle. After the war and to his death, some blamed Longstreet for the South’s surrender. In tones both blunt and candid, Longstreet writes what he saw, what he knows, and what he thinks the war meant to a country divided.

Book From Manassas to Appomattox

Download or read book From Manassas to Appomattox written by James Longstreet and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 794 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from From Manassas to Appomattox: Memoirs of the Civil War in America Immediately after the surrender of the Confederate armies engaged in the war between the States, General Lee undertook to write of the campaigns of the Army of Northern Virginia while under his command, and asked such assistance as I could give in supplying reports, despatches, and letters of his, the originals of which had been lost or destroyed. Under the impression that they could not be put to better use, such as were in hand were packed and sent. He gave up the work, and after a few years his death made it impossible that the world should receive the story of the Confederate campaigns in Virginia from the noble mind that controlled them. Possibly, had I not expected our commander to write the history of those campaigns, I should have written myself a decade or so earlier than I have done. But, personally, I am not sorry that I write of the war thirty years after its close, instead of ten or twenty. While I am so constituted, temperamentally, that I could view then almost exactly as I do now the great struggle in which I bore a part, I do not know that others, in any considerable number, might have so regarded it at the earlier periods to which I refer. I believe that now, more fully than then, the public is ready to receive, in the spirit in which it is written, the story which I present. Book Longstreet at Gettysburg

Download or read book Longstreet at Gettysburg written by Cory M. Pfarr and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2019-02-28 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book-length, critical analysis of Lieutenant General James Longstreet's actions at the Battle of Gettysburg. The author argues that Longstreet's record has been discredited unfairly, beginning with character assassination by his contemporaries after the war and, persistently, by historians in the decades since. By closely studying the three-day battle, and conducting an incisive historiographical inquiry into Longstreet's treatment by scholars, this book presents an alternative view of Longstreet as an effective military leader, and refutes over a century of negative evaluations of his performance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published by UNC Press in 1989, Fighting for the Confederacy is one of the richest personal accounts in all of the vast literature on the Civil War. Alexander was involved in nearly all of the great battles of the East, from First Manassas through Appomattox, and his duties brought him into frequent contact with most of the high command of the Army of Northern Virginia, including Robert E. Lee, Stonewall Jackson, and James Longstreet. No other Civil War veteran of his stature matched Alexander's ability to discuss operations in penetrating detail-- this is especially true of his description of Gettysburg. His narrative is also remarkable for its utterly candid appraisals of leaders on both sides.
