Sexy, sculpted extreme fighter Dean “Havoc” Connor has knee-melting good looks—and thick skin. But not from his brutal sport’s enclosed rings. Orphaned and torn from his sisters as a boy, he has no family. That is, until he gets a letter revealing how much the once-little girls want him back in Harmony, Kentucky. To stop his sister from marrying a man as sleazy as he is wealthy, Dean finds himself teaming up with her pretty-but-smart-mouthed friend Eve—who’s heard of “Havoc’s” reputation and doesn’t need some hunk trampling on her heart. Book excerpt: Dewey Lambdin's lovable but incorrigible rogue, Captain Alan Lewrie, Royal Navy, is back to cut a wide and wicked swatch through the war-torn Caribbean in an entirely new high seas adventure. It's 1798, and Lewrie and his crew of the Proteus frigate have their work cut out for them. First, he has rashly vowed to uphold a friend's honour in a duel to the death. Second, he faces the horridly unwelcome arrival of HM Government's Foreign Office agents (out to use him as their cat's-paw in impossibly vaunting schemes against the French). And last, he must engineer the showdown with his arch foe and nemesis, the hideous ogre of the French Revolution's Terror, that clever fiend Guillaume Choundas! We know Lewrie can fight, but can he be a diplomat, too? He must deal with the newly reborn United States Navy, that uneasy, unofficial "ally", and the stunning, life-altering surprise they bring. For good or ill, Lewrie's in the "quag" up to his neck, this time. Can sword, pistol, and broadsides avail, or will words, low cunning, and Lewrie's irrepressible wit be the key to his victory and survival, as even the seas cry "Havoc"?

Book Human Dignity in Classical Chinese Philosophy

Download or read book Human Dignity in Classical Chinese Philosophy written by Qianfan Zhang and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-10-05 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reinterprets classical Chinese philosophical tradition along the conceptual line of human dignity. Through extensive textual evidence, it illustrates that classical Confucianism, Mohism and Daoism contained rich notions of dignity, which laid the foundation for human rights and political liberty in China, even though, historically, liberal democracy failed to grow out of the authoritarian soil in China. The book critically examines the causes that might have prevented the classical schools from developing a liberal tradition, while affirming their positive contributions to the human dignity concept. Analysing the inadequacies of the western concept of human dignity, the text covers relevant teachings of Kongzi, Mengzi, Xunzi, Mozi, Laozi and Zhuangzi (in comparison with Rousseau). While the Confucian notions of humanity (Ren), righteousness (Yi), and gentleman (Junzi) bear most directly on the conception of dignity, Mohism and Daoism provide salutary corrections to the ossification of the orthodox Confucian practice (Li).

Book excerpt: Why You Need This Book . . . Why does a young man abandon everything to head out on the highway? Where will it take him? Using the road as a metaphor, the author reveals the discoveries of a life that took off like a rocket when he followed that inner urging and hit the road. Withdrawn because of a strict, and impersonal father, this intensely creative teenager launched himself into the strange and exciting world of the traveling big top circus. Developing the mindset of an entertainer, he found harmony with horses, and personal expression as a sign painter. He learned rare skills in an itinerate culture that would benefit him his entire life. Yet, hitting bottom as an alcoholic brought everything to a screeching halt. This On the Road memoir shows how the author evolved into a premier producer of airbrushed murals, gold leaf monograms, and delicate hand painted artwork and pinstriping motorcycles. The surprise twists and turns of life lead to anger, pain, and disappointment, but ultimately to love and restoration. These coming-of-age stories celebrate the transformation from the disfunction and trauma of the past, to the joy and fulfillment that result from unexpected encounters and experiences. Every life is different, but chances are you can relate to: -- The father who causes anger and frustration-- A disturbing family dynamic-- The boy who withdraws from friends because of embarrassment-- Feelings of inadequacy and rebellion-- Life as a misfit-- The decision to runaway in order to find oneself. Read about the excitement, adventure, and danger of traveling and performing with the circus. The secret world of imagination caused by the turbulence between father and son. A series of influential people who touched the life of a young man, giving him courage and direction. What is it like to hit bottom as an alcoholic, and find yourself forced to make some hard decisions? Is it even possible to discover true meaning in life, and reach a point of happiness? Today Letterfly is a renowned artist, speaker, and spiritual seeker in the modern world of gigabytes, impulsive distractions, and emerging societal insanity. Take a journey with Artist Extraordinaire Dave "Letterfly" Knoderer, a man who was broken in many ways, yet managed to find a path towards the light. The conclusion is one of hope and enlightenment that will leave you wondering about your own trek down the Road of Life.

Book Emotions and the Family

Download or read book Emotions and the Family written by Richard Fabes and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-07-17 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The family is the place where minds come in contact with one another”—Buddha Emotions and the Family reflects the dramatic change in how professionals and practitioners working with today's families view the role of emotions in general family and marital processes. Professionals, researchers, and academics present a wide variety of approaches to the study of emotion and family functioning, providing a rare theoretical and empirical look at how emotions regulate, guide, and influence actions and behaviors within the family. This unique book will provide you with new avenues of research, theory, measurement, and analysis, emphasizing contexts that range from the focus on specific relationships within the family to the impact of contextual influences in family emotionality. Emotions and the Family examines the shift that has taken place in how practitioners and therapists view emotions—as having important interpsychic functions instead of as a function of intrapsychic processes. The book will show you how emotions are involved in almost every aspect of family development: from the beginnings of the family formation (dating, courting, and marriage) to the transition to parenthood (pregnancy, birth, bonding, and attachment) to the dissolution of family relationships (divorce, death). Authors discuss aspects of how the fabric of family life is woven together by the complex interplay of emotions, with essential information on: marital/family relationships parenting socialization sibling relationships family health dysfunctional family processes family therapy and much more! Emotions and the Family functions as an invaluable textbook for graduate studies in family sciences, child development, psychology, social work, and sociology. The book is equally effective as a professional resource for clinical practitioners in psychology, marriage and family therapy, and social work.
