Book Business and Security Sector Reform

Download or read book Business and Security Sector Reform written by Pedro Rosa Mendes and published by Ubiquity Press. This book was released on 2015-09-20 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Challenges to security and human rights involving extractive and other industries gave rise to an evolving framework of policy, standards and good practice generally known as business and human rights (BHR). Problems with inefficient and unaccountable security institutions are addressed by security sector reform (SSR). From an empirical perspective – the view from the often mutual operating grounds of BHR and SSR – both approaches share many challenges, as well as end goals. It is thus striking that only on rare occasions are challenges in governance of the security sector addressed upfront as problems of poor resource governance, and vice versa. This paper describes the grounds where SSR and BHR coincide in principles, actors and activities, and which synergies can be built on that base. It makes the business case for SSR, and the SSR case for business. The paper assesses how SSR can channel resources and know-how from business to address critical challenges related to ownership, capacity and sustainability of reform processes. Opportunities for bridging BHR and SSR are drawn from a broad range of policy and guidance, and by looking at lessons from case studies on Guinea, Colombia and Papua New Guinea. SSR and BHR should not collide; ideally, they should cohere. A variety of multistakeholder initiatives open new opportunities to bring this about, with particular relevance to SSR in extractive environments. The overall conclusion, supported by practical propositions for implementation, is that the existing policies and standards in SSR and BHR already allow, and call for, a less rigid approach to the challenges addressed in both fields.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even though terrorism poses an increasing threat to multinational companies, corporate leaders can thwart attacks by learning to navigate the complexities of foreign governments, social unrest, and cultural dissonance. Multinational corporations are on the front lines of terrorism and cyberattacks—two of the world's biggest threats to global security. How can corporate leaders mitigate their organizations' risks and develop an infrastructure that detects and deters a security menace before it happens? This timely reference lays out essential political context and historical background to help executives identify contemporary threats and understand the interconnections between threat dynamics in an increasingly dangerous international environment. This compelling work is organized into seven chapters. The beginning chapters profile the specific risks for multinational companies and detail which global—and regional—factors might propagate violence targeted at American-based businesses. Next, two historical case studies on terrorist assaults at Tigantourine and Mombasa illustrate how counterterrorism can successfully thwart potential attacks against business targets. The final part describes industrial espionage and criminal activity and then outlines a corporate counterterror blueprint to combat the prospect of terrorism, providing specific recommendations for preventative measures.

Book HOW TO BE YOUR COMPANY S SECURITY DIRECTOR

Download or read book HOW TO BE YOUR COMPANY S SECURITY DIRECTOR written by Keith Smith Shannon and published by Charles C Thomas Publisher. This book was released on 1999-01-01 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The intent of this book is to give a working business professional a realistic review of security issues that a business may have to deal with on an everyday basis. Many texts have been written discussing these issues in great detail offering solutions. While the value of these presentations is very worthwhile for the security professional, most management professionals need a more simple and workable way to deal with security problems. This presentation endeavors to outline security remedies and options on a level most useful for the average business professional. In many businesses, security management is assigned to administrative personnel not familiar with protection topics. This book will give those individuals a working knowledge of security issues and practices. It can be used as an informed starting point with which to deal with a security situation completely, or at best, give some general know ledge of the field if security professionals have to be called. This basic information can save a company money, and the person assigned the task can feel some level of comfort in dealing with the topic. The author emphasizes that the best methods for dealing with security problems are the simplest. Management desires a list of options from the security professional and then the best course of action has to be factored into the business life of the firm. The author shows how the best absolute security remedy will often not be the best overall action for the company, and that a combination of steps may have to be taken in order to address the problem.

Book Between Security Markets and Protection Rackets

Download or read book Between Security Markets and Protection Rackets written by Marc von Boemcken and published by Verlag Barbara Budrich. This book was released on 2013-02-20 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Security is a social practice, which constitutes different formations of political order. Developing a political economy of security practice, the author distinguishes these formations with a view to the actual exchanges between various providers and receivers of security services. He thus departs from a popular perspective in political science, which charts ongoing transformations in the global security landscape along a series of categorical divisions between state and non-state or between the public and the private. A more rewarding analytical perspective conceives the two most dominant security formations in the contemporary world as either based on commercial or on compulsory relations.

Book Fourth Generation Corporate Security

Download or read book Fourth Generation Corporate Security written by R. J. Godlewski and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2014-03-04 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For decades, corporate security has remained the somewhat sinister stepchild of law enforcement, despite the relatively recent invention of municipal police departments and uniformed peace officers. Regardless, private security – that is, security services provided by individual citizens or commercial businesses – predate federal and municipal protective services by centuries. A fundamental reason for this recent discrepancy in definition, however, rests largely with the perception of the media and municipal officials who suggest that both law enforcement and private security remain relatively interchangeable. They are not; law enforcement and security represent distinct disciplines with their own terms, procedures, and responsibilities. Fourth-Generation Corporate Security: Asymmetrical Warfare for Protective Services Professionals discusses the challenges of fourth-generation warfare (4GW) in the context of private security operations throughout the world, including urban warfare, maritime, and executive protection scenarios. Fourth-Generation Corporate Security (4GCS) cannot be taught – it must be learned through experience and intuition. Accordingly, this offering by R.J. Godlewski provides the foundation upon which the security professional can build his or her repertoire and arsenal in combating the apparitional nature of asymmetrical conflicts.
