Book Alien Constructions

Download or read book Alien Constructions written by Patricia Melzer and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “An incisive critical work” that looks at Octavia Butler’s writing, the movies of the Matrix and Alien series—and more—through a feminist lens (Femspec). Feminist thinkers and writers are increasingly recognizing science fiction’s potential to shatter patriarchal and heterosexual norms, while the creators of science fiction are bringing new depth and complexity to the genre by engaging with feminist thewories and politics. This book maps the intersection of feminism and science fiction through close readings of science fiction literature by Octavia E. Butler, Richard Calder, and Melissa Scott and the movies The Matrix and the Alien series. Patricia Melzer analyzes how these authors and films represent debates and concepts in three areas of feminist thought: identity and difference, feminist critiques of science and technology, and the relationship among gender identity, body, and desire, including the new gender politics of queer desires, transgender, and intersexed bodies and identities. She demonstrates that key political elements shape these debates, including global capitalism and exploitative class relations within a growing international system; the impact of computer, industrial, and medical technologies on women’s lives and reproductive rights; and posthuman embodiment as expressed through biotechnologies, the body/machine interface, and the commodification of desire. Melzer’s investigation makes it clear that feminist writings and readings of science fiction are part of a feminist critique of existing power relations—and that the alien constructions (cyborgs, clones, androids, aliens, and hybrids) that populate postmodern science fiction are as potentially empowering as they are threatening.

Book The Threat Matrix

Download or read book The Threat Matrix written by Garrett M. Graff and published by Little, Brown. This book was released on 2011-03-28 with total page 698 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An intimate look at Robert Mueller, the sixth Director of the FBI, who oversaw the investigation into ties between President Trump's campaign and Russian officials. Covering more than 30 years of history, from the 1980s through Obama's presidency, The Threat Matrix explores the transformation of the FBI from a domestic law enforcement agency, handling bank robberies and local crimes, into an international intelligence agency -- with more than 500 agents operating in more than 60 countries overseas -- fighting extremist terrorism, cyber crimes, and, for the first time, American suicide bombers. Based on access to never-before-seen task forces and FBI bases from Budapest, Hungary, to Quantico, Virginia, this book profiles the visionary agents who risked their lives to bring down criminals and terrorists both here in the U.S. and thousands of miles away long before the rest of the country was paying attention to terrorism. Given unprecedented access, thousands of pages of once secret documents, and hundreds of interviews, Garrett M. Graff takes us inside the FBI and its attempt to protect America from the Munich Olympics in 1972 to the attempted Times Square bombing in 2010. It also tells the inside story of the FBI's behind-the-scenes fights with the CIA, the Department of Justice, and five White Houses over how to combat terrorism, balance civil liberties, and preserve security. The book also offers a never-before-seen intimate look at FBI Director Robert Mueller, the most important director since Hoover himself. Brilliantly reported and suspensefully told, The Threat Matrix peers into the darkest corners of this secret war and will change your view of the FBI forever.

Book excerpt: Finally comes the ultimate book for all those seeking to know more about the philosophy behind The Matrix and its sequels. Suppose that this world is not what it seems, and that humanity is actually just a food source supplementing a reign of machines. Welcome to the premise behind the world of The Matrix: the movie phenomenon and massive box-office series that has also produced some of film's most intelligent and thoughtful moments in the last ten years. In the Matrix movies, "reality" is just a dreamscape, a representation that six billion points of view agree to agree is "real." So if the only reality we know is a cunning and elaborate façade, what then does that signify for us? Matrix Warrior gives us the means to understand this premise and its implications on our knowledge of self and place. Combining an in-depth examination of the film with philosophical inquiry and the teachings of Castandeda, Jake Horsley has produced in Matrix Warrior a profound yet witty analysis-and all readers need to get "unplugged." Book excerpt: Sardar (postcolonial studies, City U., UK) and Cubitt (screen and media, U. of Waikato, New Zealand) present nine pieces of cultural criticism that explore the meanings projected and assimilated by science fiction movies and television in the United States, Europe, Japan, and Hong Kong. Concerned with the construction of the "other" in the broadest philosophical sense (comprising political, cultural, ethnic, and gendered "others", as well as the "other" of the natural world), the essays explore meaning in Delicatessen, Star Trek, Japanimation, Space: Above and Beyond, The Matrix, and Independence Day, among others. Book Identity Politics in George Lucas Star Wars

Download or read book Identity Politics in George Lucas Star Wars written by John C. McDowell and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2016-03-09 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George Lucas spoke about the didactic role of cinema and about his own work being presented through the "moral megaphone" of the film industry. A considerable body of scholarship on the six-part Star Wars series argues (unconvincingly) that the franchise promoted neo-conservatism in American culture from the late 1970s onward. But there is much in Lucas' grand space opera to suggest something more ideologically complex is going on. This book challenges the view of the saga as an unambiguously violent text exemplifying reactionary politics, and discusses the films' identity politics with regard to race and gender.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reads like the script for a science fiction movie, with a cast of malevolent and benevolent aliens, a league of human minions, a battle for the Earth, and an enslaved human populace. But sometimes truth is stranger than fiction. The Matrix is real. The Matrix movies came as close as possible to revealing the truth-we live in a carefully-constructed holographic reality that is based upon a single false premise. The entire artificial reality system of the Matrix is based upon a single kernel of false programming inserted into every one of us. More information is coming to light every day. The Golden Age of Gaia has been foretold by many ancient texts, and we are the ones who will create this "heaven on Earth" once again. But first, we must each consciously unplug from the Matrix. Are you ready? ~ Excerpt ~ INTRODUCTION The blockbuster movie The Matrix was released in 1999. It depicted a bleak future with a simulated reality called "the Matrix," created by sentient machines to exploit humans as an energy resource. The success of the movie proved that people were ready to hear the truth, even if-or especially since-it was disguised as science fiction. The following pages read like the script for a science fiction movie, with a cast of malevolent and benign aliens, a league of human minions, a battle for the earth, and an enslaved human populace. Like water pouring down a drain, the Matrix and its supporters are spiraling down to a future of destruction, but not everyone is destined to go down with it. Are you ready to unplug from the Matrix? Many people are ready to jump to a different timeline, to a parallel Earth without pollution, war, exploitation, or power-hungry leaders. If you have always dreamed of a world of equality, opportunity, and abundance, you are ready to claim your birthright. Once you know the truth, you can never go back. ~ Excerpt ~ -:-:- The Matrix movie describes a bleak holographic artificial system that exploits people for their electrical energy. Computer programmer Neo is drawn into a rebellion against the machines, to free humanity from the Matrix. The movie's premise is not too far from the truth, a truth that is initially frightening in its scope and implications. We are in the Matrix, an artificial world that enslaves and exploits us for our energy. The Matrix is set up to benefit only those few at the top of the pyramid. All exploitation, greed, and life-negating expressions are allowed, while life-affirming expressions are downplayed or even actively discouraged. Those at the top would have you believe that this world is the only world possible; they would have you believe that humans are naturally violent and destructive. But these are only convenient lies designed to support the Matrix, while disempowering the humans that supply the Matrix its power. The Matrix uses your innate creative power to sustain a world that doesn't benefit you. The Matrix is set up to control and dominate us; we are its subjects as long as we remain ignorant of our own power. A new, amazing future is arriving. We are all facing a decision: we can choose to stay in the Matrix or leave it for a life of freedom. The Matrix movie, The Holographic Universe, the universe is a hologram, the universe as a video game, ufology, unexplained ancient mysteries, UFO extraterrestrials, disclosure, ancient aliens, lightworkers indigos starseeds, illuminati conspiracies, ascension, gaia theory, shift in consciousness, lightworkers, indigos starseeds, 5th dimension, Carlos Castaneda, ancient aliens, ancient mysteries, alien UFO extraterrestrial, the event

Book The Philosophy of Science Fiction Film

Download or read book The Philosophy of Science Fiction Film written by Steven Sanders and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2007-12-14 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The science fiction genre maintains a remarkable hold on the imagination and enthusiasm of the filmgoing public, captivating large audiences worldwide and garnering ever-larger profits. Science fiction films entertain the possibility of time travel and extraterrestrial visitation and imaginatively transport us to worlds transformed by modern science and technology. They also provide a medium through which questions about personal identity, moral agency, artificial consciousness, and other categories of experience can be addressed. In The Philosophy of Science Fiction Film, distinguished authors explore the storylines, conflicts, and themes of fifteen science fiction film classics, from Metropolis to The Matrix. Editor Steven M. Sanders and a group of outstanding scholars in philosophy, film studies, and other fields raise science fiction film criticism to a new level by penetrating the surface of the films to expose the underlying philosophical arguments, ethical perspectives, and metaphysical views. Sanders's introduction presents an overview and evaluation of each essay and poses questions for readers to consider as they think about the films under discussion. The first section, "Enigmas of Identity and Agency," deals with the nature of humanity as it is portrayed in Blade Runner, Dark City, Frankenstein, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, and Total Recall. In the second section, "Extraterrestrial Visitation, Time Travel, and Artificial Intelligence," contributors discuss 2001: A Space Odyssey, The Terminator, 12 Monkeys, and The Day the Earth Stood Still and analyze the challenges of artificial intelligence, the paradoxes of time travel, and the ethics of war. The final section, "Brave Newer World: Science Fiction Futurism," looks at visions of the future in Metropolis, The Matrix, Alphaville, and screen adaptations of George Orwell's 1984.

In Typeset in the Future, blogger and designer Dave Addey invites sci-fi movie fans on a journey through seven genre-defining classics, discovering how they create compelling visions of the future through typography and design. The book delves deep into 2001: A Space Odyssey, Star Trek: The Motion Picture, Alien, Blade Runner, Total Recall, WALL·E, and Moon, studying the design tricks and inspirations that make each film transcend mere celluloid and become a believable reality. These studies are illustrated by film stills, concept art, type specimens, and ephemera, plus original interviews with Mike Okuda (Star Trek), Paul Verhoeven (Total Recall), and Ralph Eggleston and Craig Foster (Pixar). Typeset in the Future is an obsessively geeky study of how classic sci-fi movies draw us in to their imagined worlds.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THERE IS MUCH TO FEAR! ? ARE WE IN THE GRIP OF EARTHLY AND OTHERWORLDLY MIND CONTROLLERS? THOUSANDS HAVE BECOME ENSLAVED IN THE MATRIX OF THE MIND Are you or someone you know a victim of electronic warfare? Big Brother's covert electronic Mind Control Program operates at the speed of light and can torture, kill and enslave ANYONE ANYWHERE! If you are a whistle-blower, an intelligence operative or more or less just an ?everyday? citizen, you had better look behind your back. Is someone watching us through our TV set? Is our phone bugged 24/7? Is that a mental stun gun in your pocket or have you just missed me? How about the unmarked black helicopter or the satellite that passes over at the same time twice a day? ++ HERE ARE TERRIFYING CASE STUDIES! ++ DOZENS OF FRIGHTENING METHODS THAT CAN ZOMBIE-FI YOU! ++ Plus! ? PATENTS AND INVENTIONS YOU CAN OBTAIN OR CONSTRUCT THAT CAN SHIELD AND PROTECT YOU FROM THE EVIL DOERS! Plus, there is the story of international model and talk show host Candy Jones, who was actually possessed and commanded to perform ?their? wicked deeds. Briton Colin Bennett explained Candy's background this way in an article for the UK's ?Fortean Times?: Candy, as Arlene (one of her multiple personalities), was sent to Taiwan at least twice on test missions, delivering envelopes. There, she was tortured with electric prods to see if she would crack; she did not. Deeply perverted sexuality appears to have been an implicit element in the covert agenda. In episodes which are disturbing to read, she was frequently stripped, put to bed, drugged, hypnotized and tortured by various parties, including by Americans on American soil. She was put onto medical examination tables, suffered Gestapo-like interrogations, and was sexually toyed with by women against her will. Sexual approaches were made under hypnosis by (a doctor) Jensen, but Candy appears to have fought him off.? Emmy Award winner Tim R. Swartz unravels the Candy Jones saga in all its paranoid glory. Furthermore, collaborator Sean Casteel takes us deep into the UFO Abduction Phenomenon to weed out the truth from the fiction. Are UFO encounters all that they seem? Many claim to have been unmercifully probed, humiliated and examined. Are the ?Greys, ? as they have been identified, operating alone, or are they assisted by the military, who may have joined up with them? Or is something even more sinister afoot? States Casteel: ?There are a few alternative explanations for the alien abduction phenomenon, the most prevalent being that the experience does not involve actual aliens at all but is instead a complex, human-driven tool used for purposes of mind control. It is said that the alien abduction approach is actually a cover story intended to conceal something even more disturbing than aliens, that being an encroachment on the very souls of those chosen to be victims of government and military experiments that seek to control the workings of the human brain itself for purposes of psychological warfare and for intelligence operations requiring a ?zombie? type agent who has no idea he is carrying out a covert mission at all.? ALSO EXPLORE THE TRICKSTERS OF BLACK FOREST, COLORADO Exclusive interview with dramatic photos of a house and its occupants literally ?possessed? and infringed upon by ?agents of unknown origin.? Here is the dramatic case study of Steven Lee and the true nature of his ?attack? by unconventional mind control weapons and possible intervention by the CIA. This story alone will blow your mind ? or whats left of it ? and make you a hard core believer!

Book excerpt: A groundbreaking collection of original essays, Stages of Reality establishes a new paradigm for understanding the relationship between stage and screen media. This comprehensive volume explores the significance of theatricality within critical discourse about cinema and television. Stages of Reality connects the theory and practice of cinematic theatricality through conceptual analyses and close readings of films including The Matrix and There Will be Blood. Contributors illuminate how this mode of address disrupts expectations surrounding cinematic form and content, evaluating strategies such as ostentatious performances, formal stagings, fragmentary montages, and methods of dialogue delivery and movement. Detailing connections between cinematic artifice and topics such as politics, gender, and genre, Stages of Reality allows readers to develop a clear sense of the multiple purposes and uses of theatricality in film.
