Book Source and Maturation of Hydrocarbons in the Frio Formation of the Humble Field Southeast Texas Gulf Coast Basin

Download or read book Source and Maturation of Hydrocarbons in the Frio Formation of the Humble Field Southeast Texas Gulf Coast Basin written by Yue Liu and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The source and maturity of hydrocarbons in the Frio Formation of the Humble oil field, Harris County, Texas, from the East Texas Gulf Coast basin, were interpreted by combining the geochemical characteristics of the Humble oils and thermal evolution history of the Humble field. Ten oil samples from the Frio Formation collected from depths of 720-1569 m were analyzed using high-resolution whole-oil gas chromatography (GC), high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Temperature and stratigraphic data were used in the 1-D PetroMod2012 model to predict the potential source rock and reconstruct the geologic history of the Humble field. Based on Geochemical Inversion analysis, the Humble oils likely belong to the same genetic family and are sourced from a clay-rich, suboxic/oxic, marine-terrigenous transitional depositional environment. The oils were likely generated from mature source rocks which had already entered the main oils generation window with vitrinite reflectance ranging from 0.68% to 1.3% and expulsion temperatures of 126°C to 137°C. Combining the maturity biomarker properties with thermal maturity modeling, the Lower Wilcox could be a possible source of the Frio reservoired oils with generation and expulsion window of 29-11 Ma. The Lower Wilcox in the Humble field was formed in a deltaic depositional environment belonging to the Rockdale delta system, which is consistent with the transitional depositional source facies concluded from the geochemical inversion and further supporting the modeling result. However this does not rule out the possibility that the hydrocarbons of the Humble field were generated from the Midway, Eagle Ford, and Woodbine formations, which also deposited in nonmarine-marine transitional environment and are consistent with predicted geologic ages. Comparison of the Humble oils with the South Liberty oils (Banga et al., 2011) and Brazoria oils (Guo, 2004) show they belong to one single genetic family with minor dissimilarities likely caused by facies variations resulting in different terrestrial input. The South Liberty oils likely received more higher-plant organic matter, whereas the Brazoria oils contain more marine input and the Humble oils lie in-between.

Book Seismic Interpretation and Reservoir Characterization of the Middle Frio Formation in the Stratton Field Gulf Coast Basin of South Texas Using Three dimensional Seismic and Well Log Data

Download or read book Seismic Interpretation and Reservoir Characterization of the Middle Frio Formation in the Stratton Field Gulf Coast Basin of South Texas Using Three dimensional Seismic and Well Log Data written by Uchenna Henry Aboaja and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Stratton field is a large mature gas field located between Nueces County and Kleberg County in the northwest Gulf Coast Basin of south Texas. The Oligocene middle Frio Formation is one of the major progradational units within the Stratton field. It is characterized by rapid deposition and high subsidence rates that create complex internal facies architecture. The reservoir facies architecture of the middle Frio Formation is described as channel-fill deposits, crevasses-splay deposits, and floodplain mudstones. Previous two-dimensional seismic studies indicate some level of compartmentalization. Three-dimensional seismic and well log data provided by the Bureau of Economic Geology at the University of Texas at Austin were utilized to identify by-passed, untapped, incompletely drained, and new infield reserves. North-South trending features were observed within the basal middle Frio Formations, and are interpreted as residual effects from the deeper Vicksburg Faults. Correlation of the traced horizons and well log data revealed two structural highs in the C-38 time structure map that also appear as high amplitude corresponding to the presence of gas in the reservoir. Two structural closures described as Prospect A and Prospect B were evaluated. For Prospect A, volumetric calculations gave an in-place gas reserves of 501 mmcf and recoverable gas reserves of 351 mmcf. For Prospect B, they yielded an in-place gas reserves of 487 mmcf and recoverable gas reserves of 341 mmcf. At the current price of $4.75/MMBtu, the total value of recoverable gas from both Prospects A and B is $3.29 million"--Abstract, leaf iii.

Book Reservoir Geology Structural Architecture and Sequence Stratigraphy of a Growth faulted Subbasin

Download or read book Reservoir Geology Structural Architecture and Sequence Stratigraphy of a Growth faulted Subbasin written by Ursula Hammes and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An integrated study using 3D seismic, wireline logs, and core analyses was conducted to establish new strategies for exploring compartmentalized, lowstand, prograding deltaic systems. The Frio siliciclastics, totaling approximately 11,000 ft., are commercial gas reservoirs in many of the growth-faulted, intraslope subbasins in South Texas. Red Fish Bay field is located in such a growth-faulted subbasin. Some Frio reservoir sandstones in Red Fish Bay field are part of a Frio third-order, lowstand prograding-wedge tract. This third-order systems tract is composed of 10 higher-order, lowstand deltaic, and superposed transgressive systems tracts. Many of the reservoirs in the higher-order lowstand deltas and transgressive sandstones are composed of fine-grained, lithic arkoses that have mean porosities of 20 to 25 percent and mean permeability in the tens of millidarcys. Incised rivers contributed large amounts of sediment to the continental slope via shelf-edge, ephemeral, high-frequency lowstand deltas located at notched river mouths. Lowstand depocenters eventually overloaded unconsolidated mud-rich, water-saturated sediments. Gravity failure along incipient growth faults, which were present at weaknesses of the slope, displaced highly mobilized muds basinward of the growing lowstand sedimentary wedge. The growth fault, active during lowstand sedimentation, ceased its influence with rising sea level and the shifting of sedimentation shelfward. Regionally, growth faults trend generally northeast-southwest, setting up small subbasins. Associated with the growth faults are numerous subparallel, postdepositional synthetic faults. Some normal faults trend perpendicular to the growth faults, establishing a complex pattern of fault compartmentalization that dissects the prograding-wedge depositional patterns. Pressure-decline analysis demonstrates compartmentalization that is due to (1) lateral discontinuous sandstone bodies and (2) sandstone bodies that have several pressure compartments defined by fault segregation.
