  • Author : Rachel Applebaum
  • Publisher : Cornell University Press
  • Release : 2019-04-15

Download or read book Empire of Friends written by Rachel Applebaum and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2019-04-15 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The familiar story of Soviet power in Cold War Eastern Europe focuses on political repression and military force. But in Empire of Friends, Rachel Applebaum shows how the Soviet Union simultaneously promoted a policy of transnational friendship with its Eastern Bloc satellites to create a cohesive socialist world. This friendship project resulted in a new type of imperial control based on cross-border contacts between ordinary citizens. In a new and fascinating story of cultural diplomacy, interpersonal relations, and the trade of consumer-goods, Applebaum tracks the rise and fall of the friendship project in Czechoslovakia, as the country evolved after World War II from the Soviet Union's most loyal satellite to its most rebellious. Throughout Eastern Europe, the friendship project shaped the most intimate aspects of people's lives, influencing everything from what they wore to where they traveled to whom they married. Applebaum argues that in Czechoslovakia, socialist friendship was surprisingly durable, capable of surviving the ravages of Stalinism and the Soviet invasion that crushed the 1968 Prague Spring. Eventually, the project became so successful that it undermined the very alliance it was designed to support: as Soviets and Czechoslovaks got to know one another, they discovered important cultural and political differences that contradicted propaganda about a cohesive socialist world. Empire of Friends reveals that the sphere of everyday life was central to the construction of the transnational socialist system in Eastern Europe—and, ultimately, its collapse.

Book Relativity for the Questioning Mind

Download or read book Relativity for the Questioning Mind written by Daniel F. Styer and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2011-03 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To those of us who are not mathematicians or physicists, Einstein’s theory of relativity often seems incomprehensible, exotic, and of little real-world use. None of this is true. Daniel F. Styer’s introduction to the topic not only shows us why these beliefs are mistaken but also shines a bright light on the subject so that any curious-minded person with an understanding of algebra and geometry can both grasp and apply the theory. Styer starts off slowly and proceeds carefully, explaining the concepts undergirding relativity in language comprehensible to nonscientists yet precise and accurate enough to satisfy the most demanding professional. He demonstrates how the theory applies to various real-life situations with easy equations and simple, clear diagrams. Styer's classroom-tested method of conveying the core ideas of relativity—the relationship among and between time, space, and motion and the behavior of light—encourages questions and shows the way to finding the answers. Each of the book’s four parts builds on the sections that come before, leading the reader by turn through an overview of foundational ideas such as frames of reference, revelatory examples of time dilation and its attendant principles, an example-based exploration of relativity, and explanations of how and why gravity and spacetime are linked. By demonstrating relativity with practical applications, Styer teaches us to truly understand and appreciate its importance, beauty, and usefulness. Featuring worked and end-of-chapter problems and illustrated, nontechnical explanations of core concepts, while dotted throughout with questions and answers, puzzles, and paradoxes, Relativity for the Questioning Mind is an enjoyable-to-read, complete, concise introduction to one of the most important scientific theories yet discovered. The appendixes provide helpful hints, basic answers to the sample problems, and materials to stimulate further exploration.

Book The Commentaries of Living Immortals

Download or read book The Commentaries of Living Immortals written by Martin K. Ettington and published by Martin K. Ettington. This book was released on with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book about living immortals in their own words. People who are hundreds if not thousands of years old and living in our world today. Their commentaries come from a discussion board I have been using for a couple of years to market my earlier book: Physical Immortality: A History and How to Guide There are over twelve distinct immortal personalities who posted on this board and they all have different perspectives on their lives as immortals. One of the main characters on the site said this about the immortals: “I have met over 170 other immortals dating from 20,000 years old to 110 years old, from around Earth. Gods are in another league. I have met 15 Gods/Godesses …. most are norce/celtic Gods.” “There is at least 2000 of us out of your 7billion humans doing the exact same as me ie jobs/names some still hide in mountans and forests.” Do I believe all of this? I do have some skepticism, but even if it’s not true it is a great story. If true—it is one of the greatest revelations of all time
