Book Learning Through Dialogue

Download or read book Learning Through Dialogue written by Kenneth Paul Kramer and published by R&L Education. This book was released on 2013-04-08 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Educational practice today often fails to make the crucial distinction between learning as an accumulation of information and learning as a dialogical interaction that elicits one’s personal response to the material. Learning Through Dialogue offers an alternative approach to teaching and learning, which utilizes Martin Buber’s dialogical principles: turning toward, addressing affirmatively, listening attentively, and responding responsibly. The book first presents Buber’s educational theory and method and second presents specific examples of how Buber’s dialogical philosophy can be applied in the classroom. Rather than imposing one’s own views, this approach enables teachers and students to develop course content in uniquely appropriate ways. If you are a teacher, a student, an educator at any level, or anyone interested in furthering his or her ability to engage more meaningfully with the educational process, this book will challenge you with fresh perspectives.

He takes up such perplexing problems of Plato's though as the role of poetry in the state and the theory of ideal numbers and brings to them a fresh understanding. With its emphasis on the dialogue form and the dramatic situation, this work complements the main tendencies of the analytical tradition which dominates contemporary Anglo-Saxon writing on Plato.

Book The Attention Merchants

Download or read book The Attention Merchants written by Tim Wu and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2016-10-18 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the author of the award-winning The Master Switch, who coined the term "net neutrality”—a revelatory, ambitious and urgent account of how the capture and re-sale of human attention became the defining industry of our time. One of the Best Books of the Year The San Francisco Chronicle * The Philadelphia Inquirer * Vox * The Globe and Mail (Toronto) Ours is often called an information economy, but at a moment when access to information is virtually unlimited, our attention has become the ultimate commodity. In nearly every moment of our waking lives, we face a barrage of efforts to harvest our attention. This condition is not simply the byproduct of recent technological innovations but the result of more than a century's growth and expansion in the industries that feed on human attention. Wu’s narrative begins in the nineteenth century, when Benjamin Day discovered he could get rich selling newspapers for a penny. Since then, every new medium—from radio to television to Internet companies such as Google and Facebook—has attained commercial viability and immense riches by turning itself into an advertising platform. Since the early days, the basic business model of “attention merchants” has never changed: free diversion in exchange for a moment of your time, sold in turn to the highest-bidding advertiser. Full of lively, unexpected storytelling and piercing insight, The Attention Merchants lays bare the true nature of a ubiquitous reality we can no longer afford to accept at face value.

Book Features of Naturalness in Conversation

Download or read book Features of Naturalness in Conversation written by Martin Warren and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study describes a detailed and original piece of research work, investigating a very important genre of human communication, and that is conversation. It provides a definition of the genre of conversation by describing nine features of conversation, namely multiple sources, discourse coherence, language as doing, co-operation, unfolding, open-endedness, artifacts, inexplicitness and shared responsibility. These nine features of naturalness in conversation serve to distinguish conversation from specialized discourse types. The study illustrates the nine defining features of conversation with authentic conversational data collected surreptitiously in England. While this study is of native speakers of English, the nine defining features of naturalness of English conversation are applicable to conversations conducted in other languages.
