Book excerpt: When a young boy's beloved plum tree falls in a storm, he feels like he's lost both a friend and a connection to his old home. A young boy, recently arrived from Korea, finds a glorious plum tree in his new backyard. It reminds him of a tree his family had back home, and he names it "Plumee" for the deep purple plums on its branches. Whenever the boy is homesick, he knows he can take shelter in Plumee's tall branches. And when a storm brings the old tree down, he and his friends have all kinds of adventures on its branches, as it becomes a dragon, a treehouse, and a ship in their imaginations. But soon it's time to say goodbye when the remains of the tree are taken away. Before long, a new plum tree is planted, new blossoms bloom, and a new friendship takes root. A South Korean immigrant herself, Hope Lim brings her perspective on the struggle for child immigrants to feel at home to bear through spare, poetic text, perfectly matched by soft, lyrical illustrations by Korean artist Il Sung Na. Book excerpt: As the divinely inspired Word of God, the primary purpose of the Bible is to probe the depths of the human heart more skillfully and purposefully than any surgeon could possibly imagine. With this in mind, my intent in New Beginnings is to follow the riveting narratives of Genesis and Acts with a primary emphasis on the devotional and inspirational elements. From a Christian perspective, I cannot imagine four beginnings with more historical significance than those emphasized in these two informative books: (1) the creation of the world with all its living things, (2) the foundation of IsraelGods chosen nation, (3) the establishment of the Churchthe Body of Christ, and the most incredible beginning of all, (4) people from every walk of life being born again by the power of the gospel. My personal perceptions and convictions have evolved from a background of thirty-three years using the scientific method in chemical research, and even longer exploring the eternal truths of the Bible as a Christian and minister. I might add that the practical experiences I gained as a husband, father of two girls, and bivocational pastor prevent my viewpoints from being too esoteric or theoretical in nature. Whether a casual reader or serious student of the Bible, I hope you find New Beginnings informative if not illuminating, interesting if not stirring, and encouraging if not inspiring. Finally, if your Christian fervor needs rekindling, my prayer is that these pages nourish and revitalize youlike a steaming bowl of my mothers chicken soup on a cold, rainy day.

Book excerpt: Dorothy Lee Hale states: "I am slightly embarrassed that the title of my book is New Beginnings. This expression is used everywhere, but the idea and the title were in my mind for many years. The time is four hundred years ago and the places England and Virginia. Most of the characters have new beginnings in place or understanding. I was working at the Orlando Public Library at the time I planned this story, surrounded by many biographies of the historical characters of the time, and visited England and Jamestown more than once. Indiana University courses in European and American history, with English composition helped me greatly." She wrote the following to her nephew who edited her manuscript. "I could not have written this when I began planning. It needed my own growth in our faith. Now I want to share it with others. I tried to show our need to come to an understanding in families and with other races and nationalities. I think you and your siblings are a wonderful example, with your bonding and re-unions. I wish all families could accomplish this. What a wonderful world it would be!"

Book excerpt: A woman's fulfillment lies in marriage and children. A career in business is merely a way to kill time until the right man comes along. Emjay Howe age thirty three had been hearing this all her life. As a girl she heard it from her mother and aunts and now she heard it from her contemporaries as well. Emjay Howe was still single at thirty three, but she had finished her B.A. degree and was well on her way to a career at Newtelco. The way she looked at it; the sky was the limit. She had set her sights on a possible V.P. sometime in the next fifteen years. Her mixed heritage, i.e. Cuban and Negro accounted for her fair skin, dark brown curly hair and light brown eyes. She was a striking figure; tall and slender and lithe from exercise and strict attention to food intake. Her feelings about her racial mixture was a constant source of unrest for her. Whenever she was thwarted in love she blamed her mixed blood. But she also felt her career goals acted as a shield against any serious personal involvement. As the story unfolds. Emjay is ending a five year relationship with Phil, an account executive, nineteen years her senior. Phil is white, divorced twice and says he will never marry again. Harry Howe, Emjay's brother is a closet alchoholic, who has a high paying job in city government. He and Emjay view their mixed background differently. He says it hasn't prevented him from having anything he really wanted. His skin color is darker than his sister's and he is married to Joan who is darker than he. They have no children. Joan has something of a possessive attitude towards Hal, their next door neighbor because he gave her a set of keys to his apartment so she could look out for his mail when he was out of town. She has tried but has not successfully been able to befriend her sister-in-law, Emjay. She feels Emjay looks down on her because she is less educated and has a darker skin color. Joan can not forgive Emjay these feelings. Hal Braeden is a white, anglo-saxon, self made millionaire who lives in St. Thomas, V.I. half a year and the other half in New York during the football season. Whatever time is left he travels extensively following his favorite team when they are out of town. He is married to Amanda, an attractive black woman ten years his junior. They have a son, Steven who is a miniature of his father. Amanda has a teen-age daughter from a previous relationship. Amanda after seven years with Hal has discovered a whole new world beyond her marriage. Hal introduced her to the world of business and she wants to try it on for size. In New York, Hal lives in the same apartment building as Harry; the same floor; four apartments down the hall. This coincidence accounts for the friendship between Harry and Hal. Hal's idea of an open marriage with freedom to date for both parties, when he is out of town has added a sense of non-caring and boredom to their union.

Book excerpt: The Father gives us faith and wisdom to understand the need to share blessings that's been poured out daily in our favor. Our sons and daughters live through our testimonies of how God came into our lives and gave us the gift of salvation. In every testimony there is a blessing, a seed and a word to be heard. From the inside out testimonies have changed lives, sheltered the faithful and gave hope to all who love the Lord. In my soul I feel it's time to make a stand and recognize the people with one voice that can bring unity not only to church congregations but to families that look for solutions in His holy word. God provides us with the tools we need when we come to Him in prayer, the Lord knows my heart He fills my soul with a strong sense to become His disciple.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New Beginnings: A Bipolar's Journey to Regain Her God-Given Identity presents a bird's-eye view of the author's life. Faith Bonyak penned this memoir over a seven-year period as an overview of her life dealing with bipolar and borderline personality disorder, before there was a name for it. The first part of the book is about all the different identities I lived under to help myself deal with the issues I was undergoing. The final part is the journey to my New Beginning. It is all the things I've learned along the way to help me see what God really had planned for me. Faith's story was written to help others overcome what she has experienced. I wanted to show others that you can lead a normal life and have this disorder. I want to be open and honest about how this disorder affects me on a daily basis and how I make my marriage and parenting work, even with the limitations it provides to me. Once again, I want to show others like me that they're not alone! I've been in their shoes when I've been manic. I understand the physical pain the cycle of depression brings. This is not something to be ashamed of, and it's something that can be treated if they let themselves get the help that is out there.
