This book was released on 2012-05-01 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Napoleon wrote “Cavalry is useful before, during and after the battle”; and so it was with his final campaign of Waterloo. Few campaigns of the Napoleonic Wars are as instructive as to the use (and mis-use) of cavalry; from the lethal French cavalry at Quatre Bras, to the initially brilliant, but ultimately badly executed, British heavies charging at Waterloo itself. Sir Evelyn Wood himself had served in the cavalry for many years and wrote extensively on the subject, his expertise brought to bear on illuminating the cavalry actions of the short but epoch shaping Waterloo Campaign. Field Marshal Wood was a man of enormous military experience, having fought with distinction in the Crimea, India, the Zulu and Boer wars. It was during the Indian Mutiny that he was awarded a Victoria Cross for selflessly leading his troop of cavalry against rebel forces and rescuing a local merchant from being hung by bandits. Title – Cavalry in the Waterloo Campaign Author — Field Marshal Sir Evelyn Wood, V.C. G.C.B. (1838-1919) Text taken, whole and complete, from the second edition published in 1895, London, Sampson Low, Marston and Company Original – x and 203 pages. Book excerpt: The scenario of the wargame that will be used will reinforce four key factors for the campaign s success, and if the original Schlieffen Plan had been maintained, they would certainly have been thought and executed: more siege artillery for the early phase of the maneuver of attack on the Belgian forts; better preparation and use of communications; logistics with more support troops, particularly to the far right wing, and with the possibility of tapping into enemy sources of conquest; and fewer troops withdrawn to serve the Russian front.

There are well-researched, detailed line drawings throughout.

Book The Background Of Napoleonic Warfare The Theory Of Military Tactics In Eighteenth Century France

Download or read book The Background Of Napoleonic Warfare The Theory Of Military Tactics In Eighteenth Century France written by Professor Robert S. Quimby and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2015-11-06 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Professor Emeritus Robert S. Quimby examines the strategic and tactical revolution that swept through the French military hierarchy in the Eighteenth Century and forged the superb instrument that became lethal in the hands of Napoleon and his generals. “The period from the opening of the War of the Spanish Succession to the meeting of the Estates-General is generally looked upon as a period of decadence in the history of the French Army. Compared with the great days of Louis XIV or with those of the Revolution and Napoleon this estimate seems correct enough. It was a period of many humiliations. The disasters inflicted upon France by Marlborough and Prince Eugene were followed by the much more humiliating failures of the Seven Years’ War. Yet the record is not without its glorious moments. During the War of the Austrian Succession, a series of brilliant successes was won under the leadership of the great Saxe. If the combat record of the French Army was, to say the least, uneven during the eighteenth century, such was not the case with its intellectual achievements. The French Army stood foremost among all those of Europe in this respect. Throughout most of the years of the century, there was a great intellectual ferment within the Army leading to major developments in ideas and in material improvement. Within a few years after the War of the Spanish Succession, books began to appear, pointing out defects in the tactics then in use and proposing changes. After the Seven Years’ War, the number of such books greatly increased. The result was to stimulate an ardent and at times acrimonious debate. Book countered book; pamphlets and memorials multiplied. Gradually, through the abandonment of more extreme ideas, a compromise was worked out. Embodied in the Ordinance of 1791, this became the basis for the tactics of the Wars of the French Revolution and of Napoleon.”-Introduction.
